Just been to Kendal. It’s really sad to see Beales  being emptied with things being sold at a knockdown price. It was a good shop, selling quality clothes, shoes and household goods. Will certainly be missed if it does close. One or two of the staff were hopeful that a buyer would be found as apparently the building is owned and not rented.

On the way back I stopped at Low Sizergh Farm for lunch. Spotted what looks to be a small CL type site below the car park. Anyone know anything about this? Would be great for a short hop weekend if it was !

Been to our neighbour’s funeral this morning. Must have been five hundred people there, he was a much loved and popular man. Lovely humanist service, very personal, lots of family and friends, work colleagues and political pals. First time I have ever sung the Red Flag and the Internationale. He was buried after in a tranquil woodland cemetery. Trees will be planted, and he can rest amongst his beloved birds. Strange seeing all the local children from our street back together, all grown up now. Lots of old neighbours came back as well, good to catch up.

We have been priming our garden to do the count tomorrow brue, we have one looking in front garden, one looking in back.

We have two Beales opposite each other, one has always focussed on furniture and household good and the other stocked clothes and luxury products, both have small restaurants and cover three floors each. In it's heyday my long gone granny shopped in Beales in Bournemouth, Beales were a Dorset family. Our local town, Yeovil, is expanding with huge new housing estates but the town centre is diminishing rapidly. frown

TDA good that your neighbour had a such a personal send off, a lot of people must have thought the same about him.

Brue, is Goldenstones Leisure Centre still open? I once went to a job interview there. Back in Paddy Ashdown’s time. Nice place.

One of our old established family shops (Palmers) was brought by Beals mid last year which is a shame.  Sports direct is opening in our old M&S store which closed 3 years ago.

It’s was very new when I went down there DD, probably around 1996. I recall it being a nice centre. Been refurbished since then. The Council were still running it I think.

Very few birds in our garden today despite fully stocked feeders. It is always the same on Garden Watch weekend. I am convinced they hide in the bushes and laugh at us 😂

    TTDA,

Its quite surprising what music is played at funerals these dayssurprised.

The one I was at on Tuesday looked like a general run of the mill Funeral until the Cars departed.  It raised a smile or three when the highly polished cars slowly eased away to the thumping of "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac the Formula I Grand Prix music !!

Choice was no surprise to us, we live on a very politically diverse street. 😁 But we all get on, help each other. He was Deputy Secretary of our Local Labour Party, so lots of politico’s and activists there. Big environmentalist as well.  Everyone got a fatball to take home to feed the birds!

Love the idea of a fatal being handed out, Ttda.smile

Chucking it down today. Trying a new loaf recipe out. Trying to get the right balance for making a GF loaf is difficult. Any of those tried in a bread making machine get rejected and even the ducks throw the bread back at you. I always used to make my own bread from scratch in the good old days but haven't mastered the art of GF baking. However today I hit on a new way and the end result, which is cooling at the moment, actually looks and smells good and has a good crust on it. So fingers crossed, but it is a lot of faff.

In the 35 years we've lived here we never seen a rat in our garden until a few weeks ago when we suddenly found 2 dead ones, both of which looked to have been poisoned. We then saw a youngish one taking bird food so I bought a rat catching trap the other day and the young one is now living in a wood a couple of miles away. Don't like killing animals if at all possible. Lets hope he didn't tell any of his mates. We think they may have been disturbed from a recent housing development nearby. Have to keep an eye out for any more. I definitely don't want to put poison down.

I don't like the needless killing of wild animals either,  WN, but there are times when we have no choice really.

Out to my neighbours an hour ago to feed his Homing birds so part of the job is to ensure they are safe & sound in their home. So, alas, we have to keep the vermin down. It's one of the reasons that I have not used the suet slabs for a couple of months, until last couple of weeks. Living in a residential area not more than 150 - 200 yards from the local river means that four footed furry varmints are sure to be found unless the ground is kept clean, neat & tidy. The better we can keep it then the less attraction  for Roland and his family I reason !!

I've had a giggle over the predictive text on here a "fatal being" handed out conjures up various images. As it's the Year of the Rat this hasn't been a good start generally for those that celebrate these things. frown We used to have more rats when we had chickens, there's always a rat lurking somewhere, according to wiki at least one for each of us!

    More tea Vicar?  ..... ☕

“Fatal being” that’s some predictive text!😂

Our neighbour could be a tad too protective of natural environments occasionally. Only time we fell out mildly was when I nearly broke my back trying to negotiate some of his untrimmed ivy over a public path. Needs must, once I could walk again and the bruising had gone I went for it with my secateurs. His response was “what about the birds?” It wasn’t nesting time, as I pointed out, and as my accident happened whilst trying to hang up feeders they still came out on top!🤔But he’s greatly missed, a true character. His lovely partner is getting lots of help where she needs it.

Good photo OP, notice no helmets though. Best wishes with your scan.

Our nextdoor neighbour makes penny farthings, and other historic bikes, often several in our road. He thinks nothing of a 50 mile round trip 😱 on one. He does wear a helmet and has added a brake, as they didn't come on them originally. He did ride his for several miles at a time before 'adaptation'. He's often seen loading up several in his trailer as they head off for events here and over there.

He's a great neighbour and always has some build in the go. Starting from scratch he's built a grandfather clock, a minauture sit and ride on steam train and a minuture sit and ride on steam engine.

He's not so keen on gardening 😉

    Re vermin.

One of out farm cats particularly likes my husband, following around when he’s feeding calves etc. Flarching we call it. (No idea of correct spelling!.) Yesterday she brought him a freshly killed rabbit and was very vocal when he didn’t want to share it with her.

I would prefer she stuck to rats and mice, but she doesn’t differentiate.

Fed up with wet/damp cold grey days 😢 totalling uninspiring!

Had to have a new back fence as some low life had tried lifting the panels out to gain access, damaging them as they let them go. Luckily we have an internal chain link fence which meant they weren't successful. I've added a couple of pyracantha to the mix by the other neighbour. We've had a spate of burglaries and car thefts recently. Thank goodness for neighbourhood watch and modern tech, we get messages of anything suspicious very quickly. We've lived here nearly 35 years and only know of a handful of such until recently 😤😤😤. We are able to circulate photos and CCTV amongst ourselves, and the police are being very active but sadly no arrests for these crimes.

Again through fb and neighbourhood watch, closer group, PM'd local company checked out Thursday evening and price agreed just before dark new fence up by 10am Friday. Reasonable cost great job and service.

Good to read folks news. I noticed Wherenext typo and had a good chuckle.

Tried bird count, never seen less in the garden. Does someone tip them off?

Edit - lovely video of our 3 1/2 year old granddaughter swimming unaided this morning 😀. Jealous of the blue sky! Lovely still photo of her standing, unaided, on a half body board in their pool. She's not known as pocket rocket for nothing. Anything my big sister can do I can too. Bicycle without stabilisers is proving an extra challenge 😂
