Never really visited the eastern side of the country. Always fancied seeing Norwich cathedral. Out of interest, what heating do you have? We have Alde. One thing I’ve noticed is that there is a pre-set (?) that is supposed to monitor the ambient temperature. Ours was way out, reading something like 28 deg, when it was more like 20 deg. As the highest setting is 30 deg (?), this meant we could only obtain another 2 deg before the heating shut off. My BIL’s was even further out, meaning he couldn’t get the heating to work at all. One can overcome this by changing the pre-set. Hopefully this makes some kinda sense 😀

Freddy, we've got a truma electric/gas convector heater plus a couple of air outlets. The electric side has stopped working and we know the gas bottles won't last long in the winter.

Ah, right. Presumably the fuse hasn’t blown? Does the fan still work?

Yes the fan still works, it's probably the thermostat but OH will take a closer look when we get home. It's been too cold to mess around! wink

I would regard having some HW available when needed as essential, and most people we know who have combi boilers have installed at least one electric shower presumably "just in case" , though going for only electric showers, as the previous owners of DD's house did, does seem strange!

I think combi boilers are fine where space for tanks is restricted, or in smaller properties, but while there are only the 2 of us here now, this is a large family house with 5 bedrooms and fitting a combi where 3 showers could be in use at one time would not be a good idea, or a good selling point in the future IMO.

HW cylinders these days are so well insulated that there is little heat loss to worry about, so my preference would be to retain the option of always having HW available.

When we had the house built, we specified a high level of insulation in the walls, roof and floor, windows with special insulating glass and gas filled double glazing, and thick pipe and HW tank insulation, all far above what was usual 32 years back, so our heating bills have always been pretty reasonable for the size of the house.

Lovely photos brue.  We like Norwich as well. Glad you have some heat now.

I have been trying to sort out what to say about Katharine of Aragon next week - or rather what not to say.  I could go on for half an hour but only have 5 minutes!  I won't take a pomegranate TDA.  We have loads laughing  Thanks for the information about Peterborough Cathedral on Channel 4 news.  Although we quite often watch Channel 4 news we missed that one and I can't get it on catch up sadly.

Sorry to hear about your heating problem Brue. Hope that the fan heater keeps your snug and warm. Like the photos of Norwich, reminds me of our visit there last year.

Hope that the talk goes well millie, best of luck with it. Hope that the timer on your boiler keeps on working.

After 4 dry days we've had rain today. Fitter/plaster came this morning to complete the work on the patio doors, so all finished apart from the redecoration once the plaster is dry, and that won't be before next weekend at the earliest. Just have to pay for it now!!surprised Spent part of the afternoon on my knees, scrubbing the dining room floor, after the work and the associated dirty footprints. Must say that I'm glad that's all out of the way and we can think about getting away again in a week or so.

What a day, after the usual morning chores we decided to go to Retford for an hour or so. Haven't been there since I left Worksop in 1966.

Not long there when big sister phoned to say her and BIL were at Welbeck garden centre and someone had just run over BIL's foot surprised knocked him to the ground as well. Long story short, an off duty police officer saw it and stopped the car ( it was driving away) BIL taken to hospital by sis.

We had arranged to meet them at 2 pm to scatter Mum's ashes, so she left him there to pick up my cousin, who knew where about our grandparents  headstone was in the cemetery.

Haven't seen her since I was her bridesmaid 57 years ago. Also met another cousin that I hadn't seen since his wedding in 1964.

BIL is fine no broken bones but a very bruised foot. Very lucky not to be any worse. He is not having a good time of it lately,  he is to start chemo in a short while.

Moving tomorrow up to Penistone to see youngest son and family, hope no more dramas to come.

    Quiet on here today.

Left Clumber in light drizzle arrived in Upper Denby in real rain and fog frown, got set up fairly quickly and easy.

Now sat trying to get up the enthusiasm to go out, still can't see much outside and doesn't look inviting.

Very gloomy weather here as well tammygirl. Roads all now very wet and filthy. If it is any consulation I have just heard from friends in Spain that it is raining there as well. In their words 'the rain in Spain is just about everwhere'. I hope your BIL will be OK. Enjoy seeing your son and his family.

Another trainee guide and I joined a guided tour  of the Cathedral that one of the experienced guides gave to a WI group this morning.  It was very helpful to see how he did it. OH and I then went to a house warming party at our eldest grand-daughter and her fiance's new house this afternoon. Baby due in 6 weeks! She seems to have fully recovered from the RTA last Saturday thank goodness.

Thanks, TG, but with the weather as damp as it is at the moment the feet have not started to itch yet!!wink Glad that you got to Penistone  ok, hope that BIL soon recovers from his bruises, and that the chemo does it's job. It was fortunate that he didn't suffer any greater harm.

Good to hear that your grand-daughter is fully recovered, millie. Hope that you picked up a few tips from the guide during your tour for when you have to do the deed.

A wet morning and drier afternoon, but still rather chilly. Got a few jobs done round the house, but not a lot else.

Dryish day here so washed the cars followed by some pottering in the garden.  One of our Raspberry bushes is still producing edible fruit and some of our strawberry plants have decided to bloom, what’s going on 🍓🍓

Given the apparent volatile and widespread nature of more extreme weather we are experiencing these days, one wonders whether the traditional wisdom for seeking a specific type of weather for our touring has become something of a lottery.

There was a time when one could reasonably safely head south for the summer months without the requirement for full wet weather gear and wellies. Will we now, as in the UK, pack for all seasons?

Don't they grow a lot of raspberries in Scotland which would suggest as a plant they are a bit more robust. But, as you say strange things do seem to be happening. I have a lavender plant in a pot which recently decided to produce a second set of flowers. Other plants also to be flowering again. The next door neighbours Hydrangea seems to have new growth. It's probably down to the absence of heavy frost which used to be quite common in October but I can only recall a couple of times when we have had frost on the car in the last month. There must have been a fairly heavy one a few days ago because I noticed a couple of Dahlias have frost damage. Now whether this is down to Global Warming or just prevailing weather conditions I wouldn't like to say.

I’ve got roses still budding here, and a big fuchsia bush that has fought off a couple of frosts already. Our weather up in Yorkshire has on the whole been getting a lot dryer. However, when it does rain, boy does it come down.....hence last week’s flood.

When we heard a pruning talk recently it was suggested that we'd all be better off planting autumn fruiting raspberries as they fruit late and for a long time and the canes don't need sorting out quite so much. So if anyone's got late raspberries they might be the autumn ones and yes Tayside has produced a lot of our best raspberries. smile

We are in the process of renovating the mother in laws house and aim to move in early next year, she recently passed away aged 97 and moved into the house when she was 8 after being  born in the cottage just across the road. We have always kept all of our caravans there so one of the reasons for the move, handily its only a few hundred yards down the road from a motorway junction so our gate way to the network of sites and being an old house comes with a large rear garden

Although a bit murky we had a nice walk to the beach via the high street. They were getting it ready for the Christmas fare and light switch on.  Mrs One gone to take a look but too early for me to think about Christmas for me.

Very dreich here all day, but not so cold as earlier in the week.

Plasterers came midday Thursday and have done an excellent job on the walls.  The plaster is now dry, it was only a skim coat, so DD has started painting it today to seal,it, 2 coats of watered down white.  Will probably do a coat of full strength white as well before going onto the final colour before installing any units.

Tap installation, or rather the removal of the old taps, at sons house was very difficult so we decided to put the new tap at one corner of the sink and just leave the old taps in situ.  Temporary solution as they will be redoing the utility room an a few years anyway.  Weird looking, but it works!

Today we removed the old flooring in the utility room at DDs house, the sub floor is in a poor condition so I may have to lay some new T&G floorboards to combat the squeaking and sagging.  More investigation required first.  Seems all the jobs are destined to take much longer than expected in this old property!
