Good drive down to Moffat yesterday arrived just after 1pm, no booking in advance but checked the website to make sure they had space. Weather was stunning, blue skies and really clear.
Had a walk into town, bought my first christmas present for sister
and one for me
from the garden centre. Fish and chips for tea and a lazy evening watching tv.Drove down to Meathrop Fell this morning, not as clear skies today but still very pleasant. Site about half full, will be here until Monday.

Freddie, OH managed to find the route for the difficult route up Skiddaw. He thoiught it would be a challenge..We were 'climbing' on our hands and knees at one point and then son managed to cut himself quite badly.😱. Luckily we all survived to tell the tale. Such lovely views from the top.

TG, if you want a good site on your way back north you could do a lot worse than Low Hedgeley Farm site at Powburn, Northumberland. It's a small commercial site with just 6 H/S pitches, and there are lots to do in the area.

The only thing I remember about our route, was that we walked up along a forest road, before reaching a car park, from where we carried on up. It was steep, but were always on our feet. Sounds like you took the ‘North Face’ 😀 It sometimes crosses my mind, what if one of us gets injured in some way. I remember coming down from Fairfield and my knees were almost jumping out of their sockets, and they still bother me now, sometimes ☹️

That might almost be seen as a sensible vote

Decided to test the electric connection for the new car to the van. Found it very difficult to achieve as the socket cover was too close to the car bumper. Although everything worked decided to take the car to my favourite tow bar installer. Once the car was on the ramp easy to see that the whole electric connection socket was not installed in the correct position so 5 minutes later drove out. One satisfied customer but £15 lighter.
Yesterday was bright and sunny so took the opportunity to do some maintenance to the War Memorial including putting in some additional plants. Should look very presentable a week on Sunday.
Walked to the shops and brought some birthday cards, Daughter and my brother have a birthday on the same day.
Back home along the river and spotted 2 boats that I've never seen in the harbour before.

So many places to see with young children. What about Beatrix Potter's House Hill Top. Wonderful experience for children (and also adults
) There are some lovely NT properties to visit as well as other lovely houses and castles. We swam in the lakes when we stayed up there after our son's wedding. We also hired rowing boats and took our grand-daughter rowing. 4 -
We're usually up there twice a year Millie, last year we went in May and November, this year June and September. I've never been a keen hill walker I just like the whole area. There is something about the woods and water that always appeal to me. I'm suitably impressed you've "done" Helvellyn, did that include Striding Edge (makes me feel giddy to look at it!)
Today we're off for afternoon tea at a good Somerset hotel, we had two "meal" vouchers last Christmas from the family so this is the last one to be used.

milliehull We also hired rowing boats and took our grand-daughter rowing.
that reminds me of our daughter and her friend aged about 10 years. Our families were staying in lodges where there was a boating lake. The girls loved it and could be heard requesting loudly " we want to go oaring"

we parents tried to act nonchalantly saying OH yes rowing trying hard not to snigger or catch another adult eye 😂😂😂. Hard trying to explain and keep their innocence. In fact they did it more and right up until our daughter went to live in NZ if they wanted attention it was still a good line 😂. But at 23 they did understand the connotations and didnt shout out at the top of their voices as they once used too!Wet here this morning, very fine rain.
We definitely have at least 2 hedgehogs. 1 visited about 8pm ate some, I was actually checking on the food - it was eating and pretending not to be there. I checked later there was still food in there. This morning a different calling card right at the entrance, all food gone and bedding rearranged.
Son DIL and dog arriving this evening rugby tomorrow! And it's raining so no drilling for her. His dental appointment 11am - did he know something 6 months ago?
SIL hip operation has been cancelled for later today, her recent ECG shows difference to previous one so they want to investigate further before proceeding. It was to be performed as NHS at local private hospital as was her first one. They'll be in touch next week. All geared up and nowhere to go, confirmation of admittance time confirmed yesterday so obviously checked this morning!
Sorry for those having problems with NHS appointments. Not saying much but we've had great communication over last few weeks!
Enjoy your day folks

Many years ago I was "persuaded" by a work colleague to "run" the Skiddaw Fell Race. I think it was probably on the route you used to the summit. Going up was no particular problem, apart from the fact that it seemed, not far beyond that car park, that the leaders were coming down while I was still struggling up! But coming down was a real nightmare - about half way down there is a steep decline followed by a long level col. It felt like running across a trampoline, my knees were like jelly, never known anything like it before or since!

In an earlier post, I mentioned “the wettest June on record”. We were there for two weeks and only managed a couple of walks (I won’t walk in the rain), so that was disappointing. Traffic and parking is certainly an issue, especially around Windermere and Ambleside, but it’s the fells and vistas that are the draw for me. Even though I wouldn’t call myself an avid walker, when I make the effort, it’s just so rewarding. I nearly made Scotland this year, but was put off by the talk of midges (I always get bit🙁). Maybe next year, dates permitting.

I took OH up Hellvellyn, probably nigh on twenty years ago now. I stopped at Red Tarn as, since I get vertigo on thick carpet, I felt Striding Edge was a bit much. Too old and creaky for it now though.
NB. OH grumbled all the way up and down.

When we did ‘Fairfield’ there were fell runners running down as we ascended, the route might been called the Horseshoe? Part way up there are quite a few boulders, which the runners were just skipping across, at pace, crazy! I have nothing but admiration for fell runners, they must be incredibly fit. Fair play to you for having a go, not something I would have considered 👍

Rain overnight but dry by 10am, having a lazy morning just reading, a bit of tv and internet. While venture out this afternoon. We won't go hill walking while here, as neither of us are into that anymore, did it in our teens and OH being military for 45 years has done his bit
I like the views of hills, lakes and the coast but happy these days to view them from below rather than on high
We have a nice pitch with a view of the sea (put van in frontwards) bit of noise from the hotel next door leaf blowing but not too bad.
Freddy, its a funny site spread out in various areas but only the one block. Road up to it is a bit narrow but not busy and not for long.
Can't see the sea just now as the mist has developed.

Nellie, thanks for the info will take note

Meathop is also a site we have used a few times, nice site, but this year the CCC site very close to Kendal has had our custom twice. Not so far off the motorway and very reasonably priced with the over 60s discount. The Lakes is an area we have visited many times, so we will be looking to visit some less well known areas next year.
Really miserable day here, dull and wet, which is a pity as DD is having a "fireworks party" this evening, maybe it will clear up later. The fireworks are actually at an event just over the fence, but from her terrace you get an excellent view of them!
Due to refusing to get soaked, I have not managed to finish the dismantling of benches in the greenhouse, so unless it is dry tomorrow, the dismantling of the actual greenhouse will unfortunately have to be delayed.

”Freddy, its a funny site spread out in various areas but only the one block. ”
For ease, we generally try to get a pitch close to the block, but it wouldn’t be a deal-breaker. What’s access like to the ‘main’ fell area?
Just been out in the garden while it’s dry (heavy rain and strong winds tomorrow, apparently ☹️) and dug up a Pieris that was quite straggly and definitely past it’s best. Replaced with some Phlox we were given.

Enjoying all this talk of the Lake District. We are booked on to Troutbeck Head for 5 nights in a couple of weeks and can't wait now. Looking forward to a walk around Keswick and lunch in The Bank Tavern also hoping to head up to the Kirkstone Inn one day for a pint and a meal. Hoping the weather is ok for us.

Francis - I'm sure you'll love Troutbeck Head and the Keswick area. You can also do some stunning walks starting from Threlkeld village and the Horse & Farrier in the village does excellent food.
As for Kirkstone Pass, it's well worth a visit for the views and the drive over to Ullswater, but personally I'd give the pub a miss; a few years back we had one of the worst pub meals ever there (there were actually 2 slugs still in the lettuce of my salad!
) Far better to turn down towards Windermere and visit the other Troutbeck which has 2 very good pubs, The Mortal Man and The Queen's Head.

I managed to finish work a bit earlier today so have been having a lovely catch up with what all of you have all been up to.
Have not been up to much, mostly work,
so have enjoyed reading about everyone's trips. Lovely photo's Cornersteady, our "hardy" son and his girlfriend have been camping in Borrowdale this week, they did send me a picture of their frozen tent one morning when the temperature got down to -5C . We have not visited the lakes for a good few years, perhaps I will put it on our list for next year.

Thanks for the tips M. I'm surprised you had a bad meal in the Kirkstone Inn we go their regularly when in the Lakes and have always found the food excellent although we might avoid anything with Lettuce. Troutbeck is lovely one of our favourite sites on the network always nice in winter too.

Well it was some years ago now, Francis. Most likely has changed hands since then.

Somewhere I have a photo taken on a school trip (must be getting on for 40 years back) where we actually cycled up to the pub from Ambleside - don't imagine I'll be repeating that feat any time soon!

I'm there at the moment, well actually writing this in a rainy Ambleside (normal service has been resumed weatherwise).
It's a great site with two recently refurbished toilet blocks, large pitches and great views.
The pack horse Inn is our current favourite in keswick for drinks and large meals. For teas light lunches try the new cafe attached to the theatre by the lake.
