2023 site fees

+1to WN, +1 to WTG; exactly our position - been members for just over 30 years, and used club sites many, many times over those years. Prices now are no longer vfm IMHO, so we too have deserted club sites in favour of, mainly, CLs and CSs (from 't other club). In fact, (I've mentioned this in another thread at some point) CAMC have done us a favour by raising their prices so much, as we wouldn't have found some of the lovely 5 van sites otherwise

Seems odd that a 'Premium' pitch (with a premium price) should be offering a component that can't be made use of....🤷🏻♂️

Even worse that for Clumber it still states in the Premium pitch description:- a picnic bench and BBQ station for disposable BBQs.
Although personally I am surprised you can use a charcoal BBQ of any type at the Clumber site. BBQ’s have been banned in the park as a whole for several years.1 -
Still, what's £4 a night between friends.....?

If those are the “privacy pitches” we saw at Clumber last September, the hedges might just have made around a foot high by now🤣 They were very bleak looking as brand new, with newly seeded grass surrounds.

Same for us. Our exodus commenced a good few years ago once we tried CLs, we never looked back. Given the number of years Membership we seem to have in common, it sort of confirms what I thought and mentioned a while ago. The Club has moved on from the expectations of its long term Members to a certain extent, and is now trying to capture a different market, one that has little history of what we all enjoyed. Some will go with the flow, some will totally exit, others will stay for CLs and use alternatives. We are happily doing our own thing, still touring on a reasonable budget.

They are growing quite nicely now as are the ones at Cayton Village. We were pitched next to one at Cayton and I almost got the impression our pitch should have been a Premium Pitch as it was quite large. The premium pitch next to us was occupied by a motorhome. These pitches exist in relatively small numbers but they are being used. Does this suggest there is a disconnect, price wise, between some posters on here and the wider membership? Perhaps this is the way things are moving? Is the hobby moving away from the cheap and cheerful and going more upmarket in the sense of pitch provision. It is perfectly clear what some say on here that they would never make use of such pitches but the Club clearly think there are sufficient people who are cash rich but time poor willing to pay the extra.

If you are time poor, you are presumably not retired but still working, so can afford these highly priced pitches.
£50+, even £35+, per night is totally out of our budget these days if we are to take long enough trips to justify keeping the caravan, taking all the insurance and servicing costs into account.
Back when I was working it was a different matter.

You're making it sound as if once retired club sites are out of reach?
I don't think there is any connection at all with being retired and not being able to afford those (in your view) highly priced pitches. I think there is a difference between not able to afford and wishing to spend one's money somewhere else which I think is what you mean.
When I'm on club sites midweek I'm usually the youngest and the sites I've used have been full of older campers. It's all to do with what one is willing to pay for, in my view of course, this is a far higher standards of campsite. Now that varies individually of course so everyone should be able to choose whatever they wish without your definition of highly priced pitches being the definitive one?

Absolutely!
According to what is posted on here club sites should be empty, everyone using CL's or other cheaper and far better sites with membership declining. Yet on real club sites as you alluded to it's a totally different view. And it is not just the working folk who use club sites either.
But of course CT is far too small a sample to ever represent the wider membership, a few example, is how many families post on here? What's the 'average' age of posters on here? How many post about staying at peak times?
If one had to describe an 'average' CT poster - what words comes to mind? If one had to describe an 'average' club site user? Same again? Not in my view at all.

I suspect, with ref to DK's post, that demographics come into play. Most of us using this forum are of a certain age and some may be on a limited budget. The younger members, as Kj suggests, might have a higher income and also don’t have the background of remembering how things used to be historically.
Therefore, it seems perhaps site users now fall broadly into two 'camps' - the traditional types and the newer wanting all mod cons and will pay for it folk.🤷🏻♂️
Edit: cross posted with Corners and stating similar thoughts.

Yes, to be able to afford the number of nights away that we feel makes keeping the caravan a sensible option, there is no way we can afford Club prices these days, other than maybe a no facility site out of the high season.
Even the 10-12 weeks we now manage is borderline sensible.
We will leave the CAMC luxury pitches, and even the ordinary pitches, to those who can afford them and stick with CLs , CCC sites, and a few commercials if necessary.

I should hope so for that price😁
Yes, there’s two schools of touring, neither right or wrong. We are still happy to be budget campers. Our outfits are old, one isn’t even insured, both stored at home, neither expensive to maintain or run, and easy to use off grid, so we holiday on the cheap. We have more fun, and more of an adventure as far as we are concerned touring how we do, and come the day, will try and do what Nellie and one or two others do, spend as long away as possible. So nightly fees become more critical, plus we intend doing more cottages, hopefully some big overseas trips.
Still a way off getting our Gov pensions yet. Currently time poor as well at the moment. Hey ho, the party is planned, but just not yet.

I think it is irrelevant whether you are retired or working. We are all effected by the current financial climate, it is just that some are in a better position than others and will be less effected. You could argue that the retired are empty nesters without mortgages or rent to pay and there are in a much better position to carry on regardless. Even so they will still be looking for value for money.

Currently on an off-grid CL in Cornwall ata massive £8.50 a night.
Nearest Club Site is showing £31.90 night for an economy pitch.
So for just slightly over what the Club want for 1 night we a have 4 nights away!
I'd say that is a no-brainer!

Price of a pitch is just one element when it comes to choosing a where you want to go. If you blindly apply an upper limit on what you will pay you could well miss out on a site that could be much more convenient. My top priority is location and what facilities I have in that location. Pointless me making an economic choice when there is nowhere to walk to within reasonable distance or no bus services or other transport. If I feel that motorhoming is becoming too expensive, and don't forget that does not just mean site fees I will make a sensible decision and give up and do other types of holidays. The decision to give up will more likely be based on how we manage as we get older and I think this year or next will be the test on whether we continue but that decision won't be based on site fees.

Very often my destination is to a general area, e.g. West Penwith where I go most years late in the season. I have a pretty good handle on the prices there and know most of the sites. Godrevy is one of my favourite sites but I was not at all happy with the state of the pitches last time I was there, just muddy patches and I vowed not to stay there again late in the season. It also always used to be slightly cheaper than alternatives like Polmanter. Not so this year, Godrevy £35.10 p.n. Polmanter £30.50 p.n.

Personally I would go to Treglisson instead of either of those - not for price alone, which is £26 in September - but because it’s a small, cosy , informal family run site, . with about two dozen pitches.

I have always used the Marazion site but unfortunately that's closed all the Cls in the area that would be suitable are booked and have been for a long a long time the owners have told me they've had a lot extra bookings and enquiries from ex Marazion bookers,.

Marazion used to close end September so was not available if I visited late. Cls down there are not exactly cheap if they are halfway decent. Did you try Castle View? I have used a couple in the past and have also parked in a friends garden!

Arch, we were fans of Marazion, and know the area quite well. When we stayed there, and on a nearby CL, we used to use the laundry and swimming pool at Wheal Rodney. We never stayed, but have seen the touring pitches, and it always looked attractive to us. It’s around a 15 minute stroll into Marazion from the site, so a lot closer than the old Threeways site. Here’s a link, no idea on prices at the moment, but it’s one we would consider as an alternative.

Have just checked their prices for mid September and they are quoting £101 for 4 nights with EHU, which looks good for there.
