Yeh! and now Mr Macron is saying the OAZ vaccine is not good for the over 65's, sour grapes, i would be happy if it only provided 50 pct protection at this stage, 50pct better than nothing laughing

I read somewhere also that Spain has shut their border with Portugal undecided

Having travelled and worked in the EU i had nothing against the EU per se, what ruined it for me was all the money it gobbled up that was not accounted for mainly by all those unelected people that flew around the world first class etc at our expense.

As a travel destination, we have not crossed it off our list, especially during Apr thru Jun, not this year, when it was great to get some early sunshine & warmth and visit relatives, but will consider our options re towing, our daughter has a holiday cottage in a small village, Santa Barbara Loha, just need to think what we do with the pooch undecided

The first real sign of how incompetent Brussels is by not protecting their citizens, with their usual blindfolded attitudes ,then they start throwing their toys out of their pram , and put up a smokescreen and blame everyone else for their very well known by us anyway of their shortcomings

Yes we are, apart from perhaps Israel we are Numero uno on the vaccination front, which, I guess as your protest at all that has gone  before, you will not be accepting laughing, but be careful to fulfil any of your travel plans you will need to be vaccinated laughing

The EU are clearly struggling with this issue and it won’t be judged their finest hour. However, for the UK the appointment of Kate Bingham was an inspired choice and, for now, the venture capitalist approach seems to be working. It’s unlikely that a body constituted like the EU could ever operate like that.

    Still missing them tho’ 🥴

But then as stated by an EU covid scientist,, when toys were coming out of the Brussels pram   the figures do not really highlight, the quite unique circumstances of the population spread of the UK ,with high  mixed populations in very close, city/towns in a small area compared to other countries

Yes, comparisons don’t always make sense. Gibraltar only received its first batch a couple of weeks ago and already 1/3 of the population are vaccinated and they come out of lockdown next week having partially closed the border with Spain..

I think you are making excuses again. Your view that nothing can ever beat whatever the British do is becoming laughable.

Have we? or are we far more likly to not accept any harsher measures than HMG have already implemented, it could have been far worse reactions by the population as noted by the problems in other liberal countries undecided

I believe that the UK government have not covered themselves in glory in the Covid-19 response but also believe the the rest of Europe have responded poorly.

Well if we are ever to get out of this mess and fulfil our travel plans, then we need to stop looking back, BJ was slammed way back in July 2020 for not joining the EU in their vaccine roll out plan, and look where we are now in relation to the rest of Europe, Hungary breaking away and ordering vaccines from China in desperation, Holland burning, ignore all of this make our vaccine plan work so we can all get our wheels turning once more. cool

Science says close borders-ignored. Science says-no Christmas get together-ignored. Science says-full lockdown not lockdown lite-ignored. Nuff said. It has cost lives☹️.

I wouldn’t paint the Israeli’s with success. They are completely ignoring one sector of their occupied country. Luckily, cases rates aren’t that high, but as both communities cross sector points for work, it’s a bit short sighted.

It did not take great scientific insight to realise early in 2020 that borders should be closed, nor to realise back at start of August that another lockdown was necessary and to Schedule for end of August, or that having Christmas was not a good idea.

Almost any person that you might ask would have had the same view.

Let me think, when were masks made compulsory in confined spaces?

It is very easy to look back and say "if only" ,

But it took great courage to slap down all those people calling for the head of Mrs Bingham back in August 2020 , all we got from some was shouts of "Cronyisms", how foolish they look now,

undecidedReports in the press today suggest at todays vaccination rate in Europe it could be 2024 before 70 pct of the poplulation have been vaccinated which is the figure most agree is needed to provide herd immunity. If true many of our travel plans will have to be put on ice.yell

The UK will achieve this by the end of summer 2021 cool

"It is very easy to look back and say "if only" ..."

Well, if it's very easy,  how come Boris and Matt keep trotting out the line that "now is not the right time to review the handling of the crisis"?

It seems to me that some folk are using the undoubted success of the vaccination programme (and it is an undoubted success) to cover up for past, unforgiveable failures - failures which have resulted in over 100000 deaths, some, perhaps many, of which could have been avoided with prompter action.

It is very easy to look back and say "if only" ,

I don't say "if only"; as at the time I say 'why?'.

Looking back at, what I consider failings and few consider successes, is important in order not to repeat the failures.

The UK will achieve this by the end of summer 2021

Maybe. It depends on many things. I would be more certain of late Autumn but it all depends on uptake levels

Hi Easy, I read this and thought back to last March and the week before 'lockdown' was announced.

I was listening to an interview with a science correspondent and he was asked if it was a mistake that we had not locked down already and were letting people enter form overseas.

I recall quite clear;y his answer, which was that as we had the virus within our borders, and transmission appeared to be established, there may not be an advantage to this but the main thing was that IF we were to lock down, as we did a week later, the only way out was when a vaccine was available.

He clearly did not foresee the lockdown version of the Oki Koki however, here in Cornwall, and the South West, we had large numbers of visitors in July-September with hardly any apparent impact on Covid cases so perhaps people, initially, thought that Christmas would be OK but I have not heard anyone express that view!

The time when border closures were needed was in January, not as late as March. We were still having arrivals from the source country of China. As for lockdown in March we had already started our household lockdown mid February. Apart from socially distanced shopping including click and collect from the likes of Screwfix and tips to the tip we have been nowhere.

Saw my youngest grandson taking hi to a hospital clinic in October and dropped off presents for forthcoming birthdays for the two. I did not enter their home. Saw both grandsons in early Jan when I took my youngest daughter for blood tests.

Broke Covid restriction once, a week ago, by meeting eldest daughter and boyfriend on our covered patio. we sat at least 3 metres apart outside for an hour. It would have been allowed if we met on benches by the river but not in the garden. covered area is 3m+ wide and over 7.5m long and so permits ample separation. As a household I doubt that we shall feel free before next Christmas at best. I a not a pessimist

because we should be putting all our energy into the NOW!

The PM did promise an independant review at PMQ's last week but not until we were out of fire fighting mode, sensible i would call that, and as i said, if we are to resume our travels anytime soon then we need to seriously concentrate on the now both home and abroad.
