No I didn’t, but you should share that with David, not me, it was his source.

However, surely you’re not suggesting they are anything less than genuine? Was Boaty McBoatface on there as well?

This is the link I provided https://gbdeclaration.org/ Might I encourage people only go as far as the co-signers as any open form/petition is likely to encourage high number numpties to sign, especially those that want to discredit the proposals without taking any responsibility? Given that it is proposed by some very eminent scientists it does have to be considered with some seriousness whether we agree or not.

The more serious point is that they are putting forward an alternative strategy to combat COVID 19. I am no idea how successful it would be and in my view it does risk a much higher death rate from COVID as I am not sure how successful it would be at protecting the vulnerable. However imagine that we don't have a working vaccine  next year or even the year year after. The world can't stay locked down for ever so the longer the current situation continues I would suggest the idea of herd immunity will start to appeal more. It's not something that I particularly support but I am interested in the science.

    David

Come off it, Rufs - only 2 days ago you wrote this -

"... one of our family has now tested positive we cannot step out of our garden for 2 weeks, ..."

Surely you can't have ignored the instructions from your mates Matt/Boris? undecided

It seems to me that their whole idea revolves around the premise that herd immunity is something that can be achieved.

They say: We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine.

All that is fine, but they don't offer any proof that herd immunity can actually be achieved, or if it is achieved just how long it will last either in the individual or the herd.

As far as I'm aware we have never achieved herd immunity against influenza, another coronavirus.

Perhaps the current Uni breeding grounds will prove the point one way or the other and I hope that they are being monitored.

well actually i found out that you are allowed to exercise fido, which is what i was doing, but i can assure you i was probably 100m away from others. laughing

I can also inform you that track and trace contacted me PM today to make sure i was abiding by the rules set out by my mates Matt/Boris, i told them also that i had only been out to exercise Fido but well away from the general public, they were ok with this.laughing

David, having read it, especially regarding retired people and those in residential homes I really dont agree with the sentiments put forward especially the care of the vulnerable elderly, virtually imprisoned till the virus blows over? How long will that be? There are nearly 12 million people in the 65+ age group in the uk.

How strange to have left it open to all and sundry to sign without in depth evidence.

I'd like to be a bit braver and sign up for the vaccine tests!

Science is interesting, yes, I agree.

Well I'm glad to hear that dog walking is an exemption to the self isolation rules (others might think not! wink) !

p.s son in law recovering, he is only 55 but knocked him for 6 for 4 or 5 days, hopefully he will not have any long term effectslaughing

That's good! Do you have a link for that? One reason we've held off foreign travel is the thought that we'd have to self isolate on return and not be able to walk the dogs. Would appreciate any information! smile

No you can't walk the dog when self isolating, someone will have to offer help... see all the vet links like the PDSA etc. (Just to cut out a load of waffling around. wink)

well i just asked the guys on NHS track and trace who telephoned me at home , and they said no problem, provided i did not enter any public places such as shops,  restaurants, pubs, those sorts of places it would not be a problem. Fortunately we have lots of open space close by including the beach so no probs keeping away from others.

+1 - but I'm quite prepared to be corrected.

No wonder there's so much confusion around the instructions if track & trace call agents are saying it's OK! undecided

Nope can't help.  I admit I was fooled by Google into reading the rules for another country.  English rules do specifically exclude dog walking.

Much now depends on whether travel bans are introduced in areas with a high infection rate. I think this worked in the Leicester area where rates declined.

A ban on overnight stays away from home means "stay at home."

Yes, why not let all those potentially infectious dog owners have special treatment and get out there and mix with the community. What could possibly go wrong facilitating the mix of pathogens and infected genetic material from animals and humans apart from HIV, Ebola and CV19 of course?

Oh dear Bill, in your haste to post yet another anti-dog rant, you've completely missed the point which is that you definitely cannot walk your dog - unless, of course you have a pet trace & track friend! undecided

Not OTT at all if you consider the recent history of novel viruses and their origins, All of those killer human diseases mentioned have been created when a virus has crossed from the animal to human world. Scientific opinion seems to agree that dogs (and other animals) can be infected with CV19 and carry viral material on their coats. Under the circumstances I believe we should be reducing the prospect of mutation rather than facilitating it. I’m sure they would have dismissed the idea as  a joke in Chinese wet markets before December 2019.

There is no evidence that coronavirus passes between animals or that pets transmit the virus to humans

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for-people-with-animals.

Perhaps the government is incorrect and posting misleading information?

Also the joke being in very poor taste I was referring I was referring to was your statement about HIV and Ebola and any connection with walking a dog.

No, the transmission of viruses from China was ignored previously when WHO and UN asked them to stop these practices after the SARS outbreak (the MERS outbreak was similar in the Middle East via camels/other animals/raw food etc.) China is now resuming some of the markets.
