Possible new Covid restrictions next week

I'm from an education background so understand exactly what you're saying, but on-line teaching is never as good as face to face.
Usually first years live in halls but even renting costs money which if all on-line they don't need, or wouldn't have needed, to pay.
I wouldn't have liked my first year at university to have been like this.

The student issues were totally foreseeable. Like many other aspects of poor decision making by those in decision making positions, they got it badly wrong. Little planning in the months running up to student returns to ensure safety, little thought for the Uni cities and their local populations, apparently no understanding whatsoever how some new (and not so new) students like to behave when away from home.
Its just another aspect of poor decision making and a lack of foresight into human behaviour.

If anyone still has any doubts about where this country is regarding preparedness for a pandemic, likely outcomes, predicted areas for improvement, then search for “Exercise Cygnus”. Carried out a mere four years ago, it told the decision makers exactly the areas of concern, the shortfalls, the impact, required areas for improvement, etc...
There are a variety of links to numerous newspaper articles discussing the Exercise, however you won’t be able to read much about the outcome, or areas of concern, because it’s never yet been released, and still subject to secrecy. Apparently the public, us, don’t need to know. It’s now being fought over as a FOI request by a Doctor.

We have just after posting, a phone call from grandaughter, who is in isolation because one of her flat mates testing positive(from near Newquay thought she had a cold ) cannot get any food delivered until next Tuesday, lucky for them one of their flat mates is from Nottinghamshire and her parents have brought some food for them, all, they have had nill contact from the university since they were ordered to isolate, last Wednesday although they have done what was asked of them,
But she has banned me from contacting or sending an email to the Uni

It’s called character building JV, they need to use their resourcefulness, think on their feet. I hoped you told them they’re wrapped in cotton wool these days. In your day you had it real hard not like the snowflakes these days, that’ll tell em eh?👍🏻👏🏻

Absolutely right. The people running these universities should be ashamed of themselves. They are quick enough at charging the poor students the full fees each year but when it comes to planning for their safe return they are found wanting. I am sure this will make some future students have second thoughts as to whether or not it is the place for them.

I only partly agree as Universities are true centres of learning and research...possibly a Covid vaccine? Their cash flow will affect all of us but whether it was right to encourage students back into areas with rising covid infections is questionable and whether good provision was made in preparation to help the students is another question. Thousands of "high income" students have flown in from all over the world it's been like a time bomb in some places (but not all.)

Going back to the OP...
I feel we've all been waiting for the restriction/lockdown announcements like sitting ducks these last few days.
We're in a low Covid area although it has risen slightly. I'm hoping we won't have to share the restrictions.
I hope we hear sooner rather than later!

+1, 100%👍🏻, out of 1 job into another within hours. Eventually chose a job that allowed me to retire 14yrs earlier with great benefits👍🏻. My heart goes out to modern generations, we were the lucky ones not them unfortunately🙁

I do not think i have mentioned a tough life? just adviesed her she has left the cosy "nest" and as we did get on with real life ,by not expecting ,it to come to her ,
another case of reading into posts what is not what was said it happens very often on here then other "like" the answer before noting the post that was incorrectly replied to

Then did the OU have a two weeks summer school too. The OU had to use that method as its students were usually in work. If you look at the high drop out rate at the OU you have to question if it really works.
It is simply not as good on so many fronts, for one it has been shown that the personal engagement and relationship with a teacher or lecturer is a significant factor in motivation and learning and achievement.
With a teacher is front of class, even a lecture, that teacher can asses learning almost on a minute by minute level and change tactics if needed. Even with with on line learning and everyone in their own room and linked by zoom, teams or whatever this is no interaction with students. They can in a class setting see who is working and who isn't and take steps.
In fact most people in any teams meetings usually turn off the camera, sometimes to improve sound performance or reduce feedback. I certainly do, and in fact we're often told to turn the mike off until you want to speak as it creates a lot of noise.
I think that reflects me, if it's simple enough I'll read about it, if i's more complicated I certainly want it explained and taught to me.
I'm not saying that it has to be one or the other, in fact it has been has shown that when a mixture of the two works very well, but not for all topics/courses. In fact on-line is usually good for stuff at the bottom of Bloom's taxonomy, ie simple recall and simple understanding.

Well, if it was me, with a student child, I would be suggesting a one pot cook book, deliver a slow cooker and transferring some cash into an account to be used for online shopping. I’m pretty sure a small bubble of them could get creative with that, stews, curry’s, chilli, etc.... Plan B is a life skill as well.... Some may be there and enjoying such food of course.
Once their nutrition levels are up, then they can argue about what they are getting for their fees......
