Coronavirus Worries

I see there’s been another death today in the UK but, tbh, it couldn’t have been unexpected in that particular patient so it shouldn't start a panic.
Oh, sorry, I thought this was the Corona Virus thread. My mistake. 😳

When we were down pit, often in massive temperature ranges (-30C on surface, +40C and 90% humidity underground) in a shift; very few if any incidents of viruses, sniffles, coughs etc. Your system got a good work out on a daily basis.
Survived H1N1 just over 10 years ago, picked up from a grab rail on the train in Singapore. 2 weeks isolation at home, job done
Bring back brass door furniture I say . Add a bit of copper / silver into wall paint, soon sorted.

I tell you what worries me a bit.
Every time one of these poor unfortunate people die the media announce the death and state that the person had underlying medical problems and that they were old. Can't really blame the media for this but I overhead 2 young men, mid 20s I suppose, today and one of the turned to the other as we were leaving the lavatory and in a joking way said "Wash your hands". The other replied "No need, it's only the old that are dying" Not verbatim as I've omitted some colourful language.
You can almost see the healthy people relaxing as they think it's just a bit of flu so nothing to get worked up about. Plus sick pay gets paid immediately.
Hope it's a mindset that doesn't take hold.

Agree WN. Only a few days ago I was in a supermarket lavatory and a woman went out without washing her hands. Even apart from Coronavirus, I can't believe anyone not washing their hands after using the toilet. I shudder to think where she went from there, probably to the cafe

It should be a concern to everyone if others are ignoring basic hygiene, more so now than in normal circumstances. They clearly don’t take the issue seriously and put us all at risk

In that respect WN it’s ‘Flu’-every year without fail the Flu carries off mainly the elderly & young. No one starts hoarding items or stresses🤷🏻♂️.I remember reading 13,000 deaths in 1 year flu related some years ago.

I've been thinking the same WN, sadly it won't be the old and vulnerable that make people take notice it will be the demise of a fit younger person that gets the message home.
Still can't find any hand sanitiser...just did an on line order and realised I'd ordered an anti-bacterial shaving gel by mistake!

I understood that washing with soap and water is sufficient to kill the bacteria; and that hand sanitiser is more for situations such as whilst traveling, when proper washing facilities may not be available? I'm sure that that message was spelled out in the toilets at the DFDS Ferry Terminal at Newhaven 2 weeks ago.

I don't know if it's just that we're a belligerent bunch in the UK but as soon as a Govt. Minister tells you not to do something the population take that as an order to do the opposite.
I agree with you about the flu but I think the fact that an innoculation exists pushes the matter out of the public's eye.

It’s only worthwhile if folk actually take the opportunity to get the jab😕. There’s a lot out there(I’ve talked to some) who think it’s a waste of time🤷🏻♂️

I think young people always think 'it won't affect me' about anything and everything - and in this instance quite probably it won't - but that doesn't mean they shouldn't wash their hands because they may be responsible for spreading the virus even if it doesn't make them as ill as it would an older person.
However, for some of us, the death rates so far from Coronavirus do show that the elderly are disproportionately much more like to die from the virus than younger people:
AGE DEATH RATE
all cases
80+ years old 14.8%
70-79 years old 8.0%
60-69 years old 3.6%
50-59 years old 1.3%
40-49 years old 0.4%
30-39 years old 0.2%
20-29 years old 0.2%
10-19 years old 0.2%
0-9 years old no fatalities
So comfort for some, but unfortunately OH and I come into the next highest risk band!0 -
Hi folks.
I think it us useful to have a thread on this very important topic where folk have an opportunity to discuss in a friendly way. Everyone has been really constructive. I know subjects like this can get really emotive, so if we could all be mindful of this as we go, be very careful with our words, avoid going off topic, and, of course, avoid speculation, that would be really good. There is another thread on Coronavirus in the 'UK Sites' section, which may also give chance to update folk on what action the Club may take, which we will also leave open. I reckon two threads should suffice....
Stay safe and well everyone.
Good wishes to all.

I do agree with what you say to an extent, but I also think there is a danger that, if some people think it mainly affects older people, they may not be as careful as they should be.
I agree with Val when she said that they could then help the spread of it.
It's up to all of us, no matter what age, to do our best to prevent it from spreading as much as we can.
We're all in this together unfortunately.

You can always do what the Medics in Wuhan Province are doing now, Brue !!
I've seen on t'news that many of them , mainly the ladies of female persuasion have taken to having Yul Brynner hair cuts to help in avoiding some virus or other . Just think of all those driving licences and passports that no longer bear an accurate picture on 'em. they'll look like a lot of 'grey folks' like as wot many of us do on 'ere.

Foreign Office advice is now for all tourism travel in Italy to be ended by returning to the UK as soon as is practical. 'Contact your airline', but no comment about Ryanair and BA's decision to cease flights!

would it be too much to ask that those contributing to CT who are over there in their LV whether touring, outbound/returning from e.g. Spain/Southern France/Portugal, or maybe going in the next few weeks, contribute by giving just a short note of any difficulties, or not, during travel as a result of Coronavirus, e.g. it was mentioned earlier that Aranjuez maybe going into lock down and that the Rijoa area may be in difficulties, these are on one of the main routes to and from Southern Spain, but there does not appear to be any new updates on the web. From a purely selfish perspective i am planning to travel to southern Spain commencing 14th April and first hand information could be very useful, it need not be detailed, just a couple of lines giving details of any difficulties etc. I have a daughter who lives in Villa Martin who is giving me some info but she is static not mobile, but they seem to be trouble free at the moment, as does most of that area.

Rufs, I hope you will get replies, but frankly the travel situation today has no bearing on what it might be in a whole month's time for your planned journey. It might even be that you are simply not allowed to go.
Who could predict that Italy would be completely locked down or whether other countries will go down the same road. The fact is that you might have to amend your ferry ticket and travel at a later date. We are all in a wait and see situation.

THIS WEBSITE updates all cases on a regular basis for all countries. Spain has 493 new cases and a total of 2188, Portugal 59 cases in total. It also tells you the number of recovered cases.
No idea how accurate it is, France doesn't appear to show any new cases but has a total of 1784.
