Well, after much discussion, we decided this morning to cancel our ferry trip due tomorrow. So we drove to Portsmouth ferry terminal this morning and hd a chat with the BF desk. They were excellent. Can't praise them enough. When they found out that I was in the vunerable category and that our trip entail passing through one of the areascwith the highest infection rates they allowed a full refund on our ferry fare, less a small admin charge. They also arranged for the refund to be offset against a new crossing we made for September but this time to St.Malo as there wasn't space on the Bilboa crossing for the dates we wanted. The St.Malo crossings are on their flexi fares which will allow rebooking within 4 hours of crossing.
We're obviously disappointed but feel that with the large increase in cases of infection in Spain since the weekend that the authorities there could take drastic action that may see us being unable to move anywhere.
Besides, a holiday isn't that important. Hopefully there will be others.
Best of luck to those with decisions still to be made.

Wise move, WN 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

we have approx 5 weeks before we are due to travel to Spain but Spain is now 5th in the world for infections, however, at twice the size of the UK with only half the population it is somewhat of a dilema as to what to do, we have a BF flexi ticket Portsmouth - Caen and only 1 site booked in France for 1 night so no great financial loss should be have to cxl, but still being optimistic. Temperatures in Spain set to reach 34 degs this week so this could see a slow down in infections Have a daughter living and teaching in Villa Martin and they are set to close the school and do online teaching from home.

WN, sorry to hear your news but agree you've made the right decision.
We are having to think about what to do, we are not due to travel for another 5 weeks so may consider delaying for a few more weeks beyond than. Our return booking is on the new flexi terms so no issue there but the out going from Portsmouth is under the current t&c's so good to know that BF are being reasonable about changes.

Just seen on fb that a surgery in town, not our surgery, has had confirmed case. Patient had visited twice at the end February but confirmed to surgery today. Surgery still open all areas cleaned as per guidelines.
Wherenext a very sensible decision I think but also very disappointing. You like my OH are in the vulnerable category and although we've nothing planned I would have cancelled. Care may be wonderful at the destination but the language could be an issue. My OH had great care here last year for his heart bypass and stroke and ICD fitting but sometimes it was hard to understand accents etc, but lots of other staff to assist - not necessarily so in their native country. That comment infers nothing other than great care and knowledge but in a stressful situation simple things can be hard to grasp.
Delighted that the ferry company have been cooperative. (Seems some airplanes are having to fly empty to reserve flight slots!! Bizarre or what and all this lip service to environment concerns 😤😤😢😢😢)
Will you continue to holiday and tour over here?

That's bad luck, WN, particularly after your disappointments last year, but undoubtedly a wise decision.
I guess we have to assume that mass attendance event organisers here are following advice being given by the government to avoid any acceleration in the spread of the virus, but I've just heard on the news that Cheltenham races are going ahead today and, with a crowd of 60,000 they installed an extra 24 (yes, 24) hand sanitizers. At least I think that's what I heard. Anyone else think that's a little on the complacent side?

I think that's the best decision you could have made WN. If it was me, I know that, had we persevered and gone anyway, I'd only have been worrying about it a lot of the time, and it just wouldn't be worth it. Rather defeats the object of a holiday/break. But very disappointing nevertheless. The staff at Portsmouth certainly sound very helpful, that was a good result.
Yes moulesy, I saw that about Cheltenham on the news just now as well, and had the same thoughts. Nothing would induce me to go there! Saw one woman saying something along the lines that she was pleased to see they'd taken measures such as extra sanitisers

It does seem a bit odd M. The government appear to be saying it's not bad enough at the moment, so there is no reason to cancel large events. However, logic suggests that holding such events will accelerate what you are trying to prevent.
I also think WN has made the right call. We are not planning over there until September and have booked nothing. If we had planned to travel now or in the next few weeks we would have cancelled.
Looks as though September over there might be busy if many put off travel until the Autumn off peak.

Really disappointing for you, WN, but I’m sure you’ve made the right decision.
We’ve similar crossings booked directly with Brittany Ferries, but not leaving until early June. I’m certain the situation will have changed by then, hopefully for the better, but who knows?

Think you have made the right decision WN, and perhaps the nagging worry would have spoilt the trip had you gone? I'm sure that when it (and it will) all blow over there will be many more trips. And maybe we will all realise how lucky we were in the past and how quickly such holidays can be taken away from us.
We normally book our holiday abroad at that time but are now waiting to see what will happen.
Scafell Pike this weekend then?

Not an easy decision Wherenext but a good one under the circumstances, Pleased to hear the ferry company were helpful. We had to cancel a holiday in Norway last year, no recompense except family members going in our place. Later I was so poorly I realised it would have been even worse to feel like that miles from home.

Completely agree with your decision, WN, but it's such a shame after the double cancellation last year. Great that BF have sorted out a refund for a future booking. Have you decided to carry on touring down there rather than returning home?

I'm more concerned about our trip to see a show in London next month, trapesing about in tubes, theatres etc when this thing is predicted to be at its peak!

If they are anything like as full as the tubes we were on last November, I wouldn't fancy it. It was like a pit cage at the end of shift. You were lucky if you were 30 cm from somebodies face. Unfortunately for many it's a daily ritual, just to get to work, personally I wouldn't deliberately put myself through it at the moment. If just a one off a taxi would be a better bet, if rather expensive. Doesn't get round the packed theatre unfortunately.

Well that's eased our minds knowing that there is a general level of agreement.(Nice to know CT members can sometimes agree).
Yes, we will tour around the UK somewhere but will have to return home first as half the stuff we have will be rather inappropriate here in March. Mankini anyone?
Don't know about Scafell CS but I am rather hoping to shoehorn a visit soon to the Lakes. I need to test my current level of fitness against something I know, maybe something like Hay Stacks or Cat Bells.
Give me something to do over the next few days when I'm home.

That Cough affecting Elaine and your Good self, Steve -- it would not be caused by " Ramipril " medication, perchance ???
I just walk around coughing and hacking whilst openly holding a large 'man-size' handkerchief. Nobody gets in MY way I can assure you
0 -
Yes, ABM, Ramipril is the culprit! Although I have had the cough about 15 months before starting these tablets! At the minute, it does feel a wee bit like taking 1 tablet to counteract the heart attack risk and then 2 other tablets to counteract the side effects of tablet 1 ...
I stopped Rivaroxaban in April 2019 because I was getting a ridiculous number of nosebleeds [I think 8 in one weekend was my record], but I do wonder whether continuing with these tablets may have prevented my heart attack. Too late now, and, like a poorly maintained house roof, futile to contemplate
Steve

A different time for sure.
Not sure how the 'No Man Riding' signs would be interpreted in these modern times.
An abiding memory of basic training was sitting at pit bottom in Big K as each cap light was turned off, true darkness.
Funniest was down a non explosive environment mine in Canada. New guy from the UK with only NCB experience with us. Went to a refuge and the smokers lit up, he almost fainted with shock.
Getting out of the cage underground in Mt Isa in Queensland, when along came double decker bus!
A wonderful range of experiences all over/under the world.
