We've stayed on a couple of sites which were 0.25 acre and one which was a bit less than that but it had a 4 van maximum policy. Two felt very cramped and I wouldn't return to either of them but the other one was okay. It depends on the layout and the surrounding environment really (whether there are extensive views or whether you're surrounded by hedges or farm buildings etc). A couple we've stayed on were 2 acre sites:bliss😊

I wouldn't mind having another category of site: for example a 10 van site on 2 to 3 acres?

We go to Low Hedgeley Farm which used to be a CL but is now a small commercial site and they have around 10 pitches I think but there is plenty of room.

That looks a spanking site bells, just what we are looking for next month. I am in a Rothbury tonight, we might drive past tomorrow for a peek. Can you post a link onto the Small Private Sites sticky thread, so it’s  there for all? Unless you have already added it of course!😁

Nice looking CS as well BB, was that somewhere in SE?

How much electric do you use ? I find both clubs pricey for electric

Neither club charges for electricity, that’s the point. C&CC charge for use of the EHU bollard while this club has an all inclusive price.

I don't understand this BB - and we have stayed on a similar CL which was actually two CLs together, separated by a hedge.

The CS we stay on regularly (as per my previous post) has two acres in two distinct areas, separated by a fence.  One part is in an old orchard and the other is in a large open field.

The owner has a problem in that tent owners tend to be unreliable in that with the vagaries of the weather, they tend to cancel at the last minute, leaving him with spare capacity and having turned caravans away.

He would like to increase his capacity for caravans at the expense of less tents and I suggested to him that he did exactly what you describe at the CS you were on - but he has been told, categorically - by both Clubs, that this is not allowed.

I am not doubting what you say for one minute because I have seen it myself but I just wonder how some manage to get away with it?

I don’t understand what the problem is.  If an owner wants more vans on site, dump the clubs and their rules and apply for their own planning consent to go commercial.  If they want to remain within the respective clubs then respect the terms of the agreements with the respective club.  Site owners know what the rules are before they sign up and actually have the maximum number permitted on the written certificate which should be displayed.

I can only relate what we saw/experienced...

we used to go to a site in Bibury (greenacres?) which had a similar set up....large farm with a CL and 'another small site' (I assumed a CL?) next door....obviously owned by the same 'family' but perhaps by seperate partners/members?

perhaps these dual efforts are one CL/CS and one licensed small site?

all I saw was one 'site' that only had five vans and on the other side of the hedge (where we stayed) another 'site' which had five on it at the beginning of our stay but both 'sites' gradually reduced in numbers.

there were no more than five on either side at any time....and no tents, which I think are also allowed on CS sites.

re the particular issue with increasing capacity...the CCC stipulates five vans PLUS upto 10 tents (I think)....I can understand why the owner can't 'trade' some tent spaces for van spaces as five is the maximum irrespective of how many tents spaces are available.

this seems to be a different 'issue' to two seperate CL/CS operating on the same patch of land, divided by a hedge and owned by different partners.

I have stayed on CL sites which have their commercial field adjacent.

I agree with oneputt, if CLs want to expand they should apply for a commercial licence.

Regarding electricity consumption and costs of metering, I am sure the CL Owners Group can shed light on this and advise owners on these matters.

yes, I thought they were, hence no concern with the '2 CSs' we encountered last week.

seems a legit way of getting a 10 van site?

So if they are not charging for electricity how do they explain the difference in price between a standard pitch and an economy pitch which can be as much as £8 a night dearer?

Oneputt -  I don't know if your comment was directed at the example I gave, but the owner in question is an absolute stickler for the rules (be it C&CC or CAMC) and therefore isn't complaining and definitely wouldn't bend the rules. Yes, he could go down the commercial route but he recognises the advantages of being with either Club and wishes to stay with one or the other.

What is baffling me is why has he been told - by both Clubs - that two CL/CS's are not allowed together - whether 'owned' by different members of the family or not - when I have stayed on one such 'double' CL not more than 10 miles away?

I wonder if Maddie could clarify exactly what this Club's stance on this is?

Yes they were, and both had their own water supply and chemical toilet emptying points. Two separate CLs completely.

Thanks Jill. I await Maddie's response with interest. If this Club's response is actually relaxed about the issue, it might be that we have an owner switching allegiance!smile

My post was not relevant to any particular CL or owner although I have on 2 occasions reported CLs due to overcrowding.  My post, was, I thought pointing out the obvious.

I’ve had 2 occasions when I’ve had to leave my van on a cl and have always agreed with the owner, disconnected the services, moved it from the pitch, pack everything away and shut all the blinds. Picked up the van at the earliest opportunity.  Most people would think that entirely reasonable Both owners refused to take payment for the time the van was left.

WRT 2 x CL,s run by the same owner I’ve stayed on a couple and never had a problem, separate facilities and for all I know may be run as 2 separate businesses.

I have stayed at one near Brigg on a couple of occasions. One owned by one member of the family and the other by a different member. Can't see how having 2 different owners could disqualify them from running CLs providing all terms are met. There was a walking lane between the above mentioned CLs but I seem to recall that they did both use the same waste bins so maybe they were breaking the rules then.

Haven't been back to the area for some years so not sure if they are still going either as CLs or independent sites.

We stayed at Low Hedgeley in Northumberland when it was a CL. It’s a lovely site and kept to very high standards. The owner wanted to run two CLs but was told he had to have two separate entry roads. Nice to see he has now gone down the independent route as I think he will undoubtedly have a thriving business.

I did mention Low Hedgeley on the Small Private Sites thread but I can't remember if I put link up.....anyway its very peaceful and the owner Harry is one of the nicest gentleman I've ever met!

If you're looking for decent pub grub in the vicinity The Tankerville Arms at Eglingham ìn pretty good and about 10 minutes drive awaylaughing

We stayed at Low Hedgeley when it was a CL and agree it is very good but if you want a proper CL Brandon Ford on the opposite side of the main road about half a mile away is excellent. Newly opened this year we spent three weeks there and only left when we were turfed off because they were fully booked!

Longtimecaravanner that’s the sign of a good CL! Thanks for the info, we want to head back up to Northumberland next year a plans are starting to take shape. I’ll have a look at Brandon Ford.

Completely off thread so I apologise 🤭 but another good eatery is Milan’s in the centre of Wooler (near Powburn - Low Hedgeley Farm). A nice Italian restaurant but you must book.

We popped into have a look at River Breamish Site, very nice. Didn’t spot the CLs, but we were flying past in truth. Stopped off in Wooler at Milk Bar, got to be done!

We are over Border now, near Melrose. Will be looking out for a few CLs and Sites while here. Gertie tour is next up for this area!😁

Agree Brandon Ford is excellent, especially if youre a keen walker as there are good walks from the site and its easy to get into the Cheviots. I can also recommend Chillingham Barns CL.

Or if you'd like to be nearer the coast Shipley Smallburns is well placed.

There are two which used to be CL's in the Bamburgh/Seahouses area called 'Westfield Paddock' and 'Fowberry Farm '. Both have fab locations but we haven't been to either for a few years so maybe do some research and see what Google throws up.

Hopefully you find somewhere good: we have beautiful and often deserted hills and beaches to explore up North😊

We stayed at Shipley Smallburns eight years ago. A little bit open and a long walk from the pub. Decent amount of space though.

Does anyone know the full story behind this BBC news piece

A councillor who faced complaints about the legality of caravan pitches on his land has been cleared of wrongdoing.

Former Powys planning chair David Price won permission last year to run 28 pitches at Noyadd Farm, Builth Wells.

But evidence showed he had been running 28 pitches for years when Caravan Club rules only allowed him five.
