Member Offer: My Esso Card

I have had mine for a couple of weeks, not had the occasion to use it. Retrieved the pin number easily enough but I am getting a bit concerned now. Will it work or be refused, will the pin number work, will I be charged twice? Starting to think that the best place for the thing is the fire.

Surprise, surprise yesterday evening got the 2nd email advising about the debit from my account however the debit still has not happened despite it now being a week or 5 working days since we filled up! Considering that we have filled up at least 10 times with the card we should have had 10 emails, but I guess that would be expecting a bit much?

Hi Surfer
When they contacted you about lack of funds did they follow their own rules? Did they retry your account after the first failed payment?
4.2 If Pump-King is unsuccessful in obtaining payment for a Fuel purchase through the Fuel Card from the Cardholder, it is entitled to block the Fuel Card immediately until the balance has been settled in full. 4.3 If after 3 Working Days, Pump-King or the Payment Service Provider is still unable to process the Cardholder's payment, Pump-King will take the following steps: (a) promptly send an electronic communication to the Cardholder to remind them to make the payment of the Fuel purchase; (b) after 5 Working Days, if the Cardholder has not paid for the Fuel purchase, Pump-King will send a follow up electronic communication to the Cardholder for payment of the Fuel purchase; (c) after 7 Working Days, if the Cardholder has still not paid for the Fuel purchase, Pump-King will begin a process to pursue the unpaid debt by appointing a debt collection company and will send an electronic communication to the Cardholder informing them of this appointment.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to give you an update on Pump King Fuel Cards. Since the card was launched in November 2018, over a third of Club members have signed up to the offer and many have already made significant savings on the cost of fuel.
We know there have been some operational and technical issues and we appreciate your patience with this. To those affected, we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Pump-King been working to establish a more efficient and enhanced offering, as a result, all cardholders will be receiving a new fuel card by Monday 18th February.
Once you receive your new card please follow the 4 simple steps below to continue to benefit from discounted fuel at all Esso petrol stations across the UK.
- Your new card will be labelled Pump King, this will avoid confusion between this card and other cards issued. This change will also open up the opportunity in the future to increase the network of fuel stations in this scheme to provide you with greater choice and savings.
- To activate your new card please follow the below steps:
Step 1: Log onto your account at www.pump-king.co.uk
Step 2: Enter the long card number in the centre of your new fuel card (this number is bespoke to your account)
Step 3: Verify that your card number and unique ID on the screen match your new physical card
Step 4: Your new pin code will now be visible on the screen (please make a note of your NEW pin)
This new card will over-ride your existing card (which will stop working on 19 February).

As per Rowena; We know there have been some operational and technical issues and we appreciate your patience with this. To those affected, we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Rather than some, it appears to be an overwhelming number of issues, but thank you for the apology and marketing blurb.
No one has replied to concerns about our details or data being held in a country that is outside the jurisdiction of the EEC. How do we know that our details cannot be sold on to third parties as they also have our debit card details? Also probably not covered by the new GDPR legislation?

this has the hint of a more underlying problem, this is what ecommerce said on 23/11/18
quote
Esso is a highly reputable company, the Club has agreement between WEX (Esso) and PK Fuel Ltd (re-seller) The reason why this offer has taken over two years is that we need to know that members data, the Clubs reputation will not be damaged

2 years in the making and then it all unravells when introduced maybe somebody should be walking the plank

Currently, the card no. on the on-line Pump King account can't be changed, so for those of us that are happily using the Esso card with no problems, how are we supposed to change over, assuming the new Pump King card arrives on time? BTW Rowena, I'm unable to collect my new Pump King card until early March, so where does that leave me after the 19th February? With an Esso card that won't work probably?
Edit - If I hadn't been made aware of these changes on another forum, I'd be totally oblivious to what's going on. Have never had any communication from CMC from the time I applied for the Esso card and that's still the case to date.

I suggest this is important enough to merit a direct email. Either from PK to everyone who has signed up. Or if that's not possible, from CMC to all members.
Otherwise there will be lots of people with an invalid card on 19 Feb, and there is a whole new community of people who become upset!
I note that half term starts on Fri 15th Feb, so families with children may well be away from home.

i could be wrong but I think what you need to do is
1. go to the log in page
2. type in your new card number in the Pump-King reference box, which in turn should open up your account.
3. displayed should be your new card and pin number
4. all your other details should remain as is e.g. your debit card number, email address etc, i say this because there is nothing in the instructions that say you need to re-enter these details.
but who know's, if we wait as long again for some info from the club it will be 2020, and we will still be waiting for the results of the prize draw, if there ever is one
what is more worrying is the fact, that the pump-king computer obviously had difficulty coping with a flood of new registrations when the offer was first published, so what is going to happen on the 19th Feb when all those updated registrations take place, computer bombs out again ?

And for those of us still waiting for the first card to arrive????

Interesting Rufs.
Pump King log in page asks for email and password. If I enter these, takes me to my account which shows the current fuel card number which can't be edited.
Interesting to note that before I received my card, I was given a PIN no and was showing on the account page. No card number was showing but nothing could be entered as this box was blocked. Card arrived and still couldn't input the number. As soon as I used the card, the card no miraculously appeared.
FWIW, just before the card arrived, my account PIN was changed without me knowing but I spotted it an hour before filling up. On the first fill with the card, entered this "new" PIN at the garage but got rejected twice. Then tried the original PIN (good job I'd written it down) and hey presto, transaction went through. Suffice to say that the PIN no. on my account still isn't the right one. At least I haven't been double billed like some others have.

you could be one of the lucky ones, i have a card that works, but if some folk on here are to believed, then all those that have given up their debit card numbers are going to be scammed for thousands with no redress to the club or pump-king who are registered outside the UK,

I suspect they suspended sending new cards out a few weeks ago. I know that I would have done - especially if I knew I was going to have to reissue them all!
But there are a few things I'd have done differently including sending an email to all my customers letting them know, rather than relying on CMC to put it in an online forum.
1 -
As for T's & C's, I've never received a thing from CMC, Esso or Pump King. Wasn't even aware of the 15lt minimum and 80lt max where a £? surcharge may apply. Again, gleaned this fact from another forum.

agree, but it is obvious now that PK were swamped by the number of applications for the card, systems could not cope, not enough customer service staff and the whole thing went into melt down, how they will deal with the recovery and introduction of thousands of new cards remains to be seen, not holding my breath just glad my card is working in the interim.

We can only ponder as to why all the cards bearing the Esso brand have to be replaced with new cards bearing the name Pump King. I must admit I am not totally confident that all we be well in this changeover bearing in mind the many apparent problems so far. Time will tell.
PS I looks like we may be actually away for a few days when the old card is deactivated and the new one arrives, so I won't be able to use either....

Just had a thought. How can Rowena say she has been in touch with Esso/Pump King/Wev or whoever when no member can. does she have another number or email address just for the club and if so then why not give it out to members so we can get answers.
0 -
well my guess is that the club are on a far greater commercial footing with PK than they let on to be, if you remember the Shell card was a similar fiasco and that was PK also. Perhaps the club would like to disclose what the commercials are and how they will benefit members.

If a third of CC members have signed up, that's 300,000 people or so. Giving an alternative number out will immediately get it overwhelmed.

Hi WillDeBeast,
I have been advised that Pump King will be emailing everyone with information on this and you should receive the email soon.

Hi Watendlath, You should now receive the new card by the 18th February. We sincerely apologise that you did not receive the first card. .

Rowenna, you wrote:-

I just cannot find anything about what this enhancement might be. Can you please point me in the right direction to read about it/them.

This weeks card price is £1.239 for diesel, £1.164 for unleaded and £1.321 for premium diesel....
These prices apply nationally, but Morrisons vary considerably
Morrisons Diesel here is £1.269 compared to essocard £1.239 .
Sainsburys is £1.28
It all depends where you live.
