What are you all up to

Couldn't agree more, Millie. We were shocked at the price they wanted as an entrance fee when we visited Salisbury earlier this year. We refused to pay and did actually consider if they would physically eject you if you insisted on going in!
If in Liverpool both cathedrals are free at point of entry (or were the last time I visited) and both interesting in their own right.
Funnily enough the same principle applied last week before we came away. I was asked to contribute to 2 different charities. No problem as they were 2 different hospices. Only, they didn't want a donation but a monthly direct debit for a lottery. Quite happy to give both a £5 there and then but they couldn't accept it. My poor aunt (literally poor) was hounded by quite a few charities to increase her direct debit. It got so bad one of my cousins complained to the Charity Commission and also got the charities numbers blocked on my aunts phone.

Sorry to hear your Mum is poorly Brue - good wishes. Great photos of the wedding Moulsey..... and welcome back to the caravanning wing, Tammygirl. Hope those of you who have been away, or have been sampling cream teas (DK), have had a good time.

Very often we go to a service, that gets us in and gives us time to look about and after the service to wander around. Obviously we make an offering
TG - Congrats on the new van, glad first trip went well

WN I have heard of charities hounding people (especially the elderly) before. I think there was a case in the papers a couple of years ago about a lady who took her own life because of it - it is despicable. I just can't agree with charging people to go into a religious building although we do have to understand and accept that they need to make money in other ways. It's a constant juggling act as no money comes from the Government/State at all.
Great news Tammygirl. I am glad your new caravan is a success so far. I hope you enjoy it.
Helen, your son's house sounds great. Much better than being in a big city. I hope all goes well for them.
It has rained overnight here and is a very grey morning. OH going for his B12 injection this morning and Anglian Water are coming (again
) to try and sort out the smell coming from the drains in our street. An exciting day ahead.

I do have problems with admission charges to places of worship. Our local parish church is situated within a Norman castle and is therefore something of a tourist attraction and we do not charge admission. We still have running costs, just like these cathedrals but with a smaller congregation to meet them. It's always difficult when it is something of a dual function location but its primary purpose does make charging leave a bit of an aftertaste.

I don't want to alarm you, but don't get your hopes up too much, there's a road in Chelmsford, just off the main thoroughfare food shops car park etc, that has had a bad drain smell for years and years. Heat and rain effect in the same way - slightly stronger, but always underlying 😉

The husband of one of the volunteers that I am sometimes on duty with is a vicar of a local church. At the beginning of the summer when they had a few days off they went to Ely and the lady on the desk said 'Welcome to the Ely Experience'. He was incensed and said 'This is not an experience it is a place of worship'. Needless to say they did not go in.

Yes Bakers2 this is an on-going problem. They did sort it out a couple of years ago as they found a huge blockage about 3 streets away from us (where there are some take-aways) and cleared it and all has been well. About 3 weeks ago it came back and so far they haven't found a blockage. It comes and goes and the hot weather or heavy rain doesn't help. We have had both in recent weeks so no I haven't got my hopes up.

I've forgotten the charge for entry into Ely cathedral when we visited, but I found it too high. I don't like charges but folks are often VERY mean with donations, so it really is a juggling/balancing act. We didn't 'do the cathedral but did visit the stained glass museum, much more reasonable charge, which is situated in the cathedral and allows you to look down into the body 😉.
Even then lots of signs saying no photography totally ignored. Breaking copyright and the custodians are the ones who get into trouble if the images are reproduced 😤😤😤. I spoke to some and reported them. Seems folks think they have every right and no obligation 😤

I won't pay to go into a Cathedral. If it was a couple of pounds maybe. I am only likely to be in the place for 10/15 minutes. It is different if there is some sort of event like the space thing at Peterborough or the Mappa Mundi in Hereford.
Bakers2 I think you are being a bit harsh on the photographers. Can you actually have copyright in a building of such age? Often the stipulation of no flash is sensible as that can be annoying. 99.9% of the photos will be for personal use so the building won't loose anything by it. I have seen some buildings making a small charge for taking photographs.

I don't mind paying. The charge is normally similar or less than a lot of stately homes and the up keep costs are probably higher. It would be nice if they did not have to charge but they do have to balance the books, just like the rest of us. When we went to Ely I did the tower as well, (OH only went part way) so much more akin to visiting a stately home, rather than a place of worship. If you wish to use it as a place of worship, there is no charge for attending a service, other than any donation one might like to give.

This wasn't stained glass in situ in the building, but examples of stained glass designs on show in the museum. I worked with old documents and disclaimers had to be signed that copies were only for personal use. That gave us a get out clayse onus on A. N. Other. Copies could be used for other purposes but permission had to be granted. Copyright law was tightened up a few years back. Nice big fat book with all the complex rules 😉. There was a case brought against an archive where an imagine had been taken and used for a promotion leaflet. Fortunately/unfortunately a leaflet was put through the copyright holder's letter box. Court case resulted, junior member of staff took brunt on blame 😢. Claimant passed the large fine onto charity, it was to make the point. We were all 'schooled' regularly - if in doubt refer it up 😉.

We happened to be visiting Wells cathedral when our first grandchild was born and we lit a candle in thanks. We then made a special visit to do the same for each of the other five grandchildren births. Also another visit to say thanks for the recovery of our young daughter in law after a serious stroke. If in the city I always went into the cathedral to say a quiet prayer, but no more, as now they charge to go in. We always left a donation but I, like others, object to being charged to visit a church. So we no longer go in. Worcester cathedral on the other hand is free and it is lovely, so interesting, and worthy of a visit. I do wonder if charging cathedrals loose out as many are unhappy with charging and won't visit.

Damp morning has now passed but grey skies haven't. Very warm! Whizzed into town and got waylaid - still didn't need the umbrella on the way home 😉.
Tammygirl hope you're getting all your stuff sorted in cupboards in your new caravan? Delighted you had a good first night? Have you made further plans for here or over there yet?
Cyberyacht your place of worship inside the castle sounds interesting. Which castle? I'll add it to my list, which I accidentky had as lust when I checked 😲.
Catching up with friends this afternoon, looking forward to some light relief they've been to Isle of Man so looking forward to hearing about it.

After a damp start here the sun is trying to appear. Good star and planet show last night. Cancelled Seacroft as we have decided to use the Kesingland site for 4 nights, we will have the grandtwins for 2 of the nights. Bit surprising for a bank holiday there seems to be a lot of club pitches available in this area.
Just picked the last of the strawberries and raspberries, crops have really been good this year.

'Interesting' day today. Anglian Water came this morning and before they did the 'smoke test' on our drains decided to investigate various manhole covers in the area and found a blockage - hooray! It is about 3 streets away from us and the engineer said very tactfully that it is in a very 'diverse' area. After the tanker has been to clear the blockage they are then going to go house to house and try to educate people about what not to put down their drains and toilets - best of luck with that! We then took 2 of the grandsons into town to see Tim Peake's space capsule in the Cathedral which they found really interesting. While having some lunch in town with them got a phone call from eldest grand-daughter to say that the family cat she is looking after while the family are away has had bad D&V so have taken her with the cat to the vets this afternoon. Antibiotic injection and anti sickness injection given and £80 vet bill paid!! I declined the blood test and said daughter could decide about that when gets back from holiday.
Regarding taking photos in Cathedrals, Peterborough usually make a small charge for this (£3) which is the only fixed charge asked for. However they have waived that during the space capsule exhibition as Samsung are sponsoring the event and no charges are allowed so If you want to take photos in Peterborough Cathedral for free now is your chance! There is no charge to see the space craft and exhibition either.
Enjoy Kessingland OP. I hope you have a lovely time with the twins.

Started out grey this morning but the sun has just come out (bit late as usual)
Shopping and bank this morning in town as OH had to go to the bookshop to collect his new French map book
Home for lunch then just started to gather things together to take out to caravan when DIL and grandson arrived for a few hours visit, they have now left an on their way back home to Wiltshire via a friend in Catterick.
Second attempt at getting out to the caravan was scuppered by a friend and wife in the village stopping round to see the new van.
Given up now and come indoors for a cuppa as its freezing outside. Sun shining but oh boy the wind would cut you in half.
Will make another attempt in a wee while.
Top lockers are not as deep as the ones in the MH and no shelf in 3 of them so will need to have a rethink where things go. Lots of food cupboard space under the sink and another cupboard opposite, we try to keep heavier items in these.
One of the under seat spaces is full of equipment but the other one is completely empty. However the strange thing is that there is no access to under the seats unless you lift up the seat bases, no flap. Wardrobe is much bigger and also has 2 drawers underneath. Bathroom is much bigger and has more cupboard space, shower is bigger too. Swings and roundabouts

Had some heavy rain overnight so it was a damp dog walk this morning.
Had a free hour before work so decided after sampling Welsh Cakes on our holiday in Wales, I would make some. Was surprised how easy they were, and they tasted pretty good too
Caravan is packed ready for the off tomorrow, we will be joining the big BH getaway!
Tammygirl welcome back to caravaning, good to know the first night went well.
Oneputt enjoy your break away with the grand twins

Hmm!
This charging for entry to places of worship smacks to me of the money changers having been thrown out of the temple by Jesus have now crept back in through the back door.
The Church commissioners, C of E, are not short of a bob or two (£millions in fact) and one really has to ask to what extent are they maintaining the fabric of their churches?

Today was our last one away this trip. We had rain early this morning and the odd shower through the morning so we just had a walk from the site before lunch. Then sorted out a couple of orders from Amazon before driving over to Leighton Hall. Good hour's guided tour before a talk on Owls by a member of Corio Raptor Care Rehabilitation. Very heavy rain as were leaving and then again this evening. Forecast isn't good for tomorrow for our tow home, unfortunately.
Glad that your new caravan is living up to expectations, TG. Have you decided on your next trip away?
All that are on the road tomorrow take care and arrive at your respective sites safely and have grand time away.
Good to hear that you got back home safe and sound, WN

Not yet, I'm holding out for at least 4 weeks in France
then the same in the UK
could do with some warm sunny weather for awhile before it goes for the year. Its been pretty miserable up here for the last few weeks.
Safe journey tomorrow to yourself and everyone else who will be on the road, not a BH up here so roads won't be busy.

We have not been away in the van for a couple of weeks and we can't go away again for another 2 weeks due to visiting relatives from Canada so a bit fed up. Tonight we have booked our October break 6 nights at West Ayton Club site then 2 nights at Durham Club site on the way home. Looking forward to that but we do have a few nights booked before that.
