Clean air stickers - important update

I'm just bring this back into the current topics again as the 'Crit Air' environment sticker for your car is now required in a lot more areas. Apparently whole departements have 'gone clean' or are going to do and will now require you to have a sticker. This link explains which departements are affected and it now looks as if those of us who thought we didn't need a sticker because we don't go near cities may have to think again.

Obviously we'll all need to keep an eye out for high pollution levels too, so it's hope they are investing the money raised in some sort of 'flagging up' system for those who don't use 'Apps' (believe it or not some people don't have smartphones) which indicates pollution levels and which categories of vehicle are allowed in.

The website does admit (somewhere) that it's now difficult for non-residents (and I think it's addressed to people who don't live in a particular place) to work out just what is required where and when - so it's going to even more difficult for people just passing through on their holidays

Val, thanks for posting this (which should be a sticky although there are lots of them which may need sorting?)

Like the breathalyser thing, it looks far too complex and confusing so I'll have to look again when we return to La Belle France.

Thanks Val, presumably the sticker we got last year will be valid for all these new places?

Yes, it will.  But for those who (like us) thought they wouldn't need one as they don't go anywhere near cities, it may be advisable to read all this and see if your route takes you through any of these departments.  The Vendee area is affected, as is the area around Chartres, the Pyrenees Atlantiques, and around Clermont Ferrand.

It may particularly affect those travelling in vintage motorhomes, where the age of the vehicle may preclude it being eligible for any sort of sticker.

BUT - and here is a quote from the website:

The purchase of a Crit’Air badge in itself is not particularly helpful. The crucial factor in many cases is the knowledge of which vignette color may drive on which day and during which times, in which zone and which types of vehicles are affected. Here you will find more about Green-Zones’ information services in real time ...

You can also download the App which will give this real time information - so don't be complacent thinking 'I've got my sticker, I can drive anywhere'.  That may not necessarily be the case.

And it's not even the 1st. of April.

Thanks Val, shall have a proper look tomorrow but I suppose we should start looking at acquiring a Smartphone again.

Thanks Val for flagging this up. OH checked the Crit'Air website to look at the details and then checked the official French Government website and has ordered from them at 4.18 euros each where as the Crit'Air wanted 29.65 euros each a bit different. So the advice is to go to the www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/ then click top right for language you want, have got the link above. Just looked and will cost 4.80 euros for postage to UK.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry the above should read 4.80 euros for the sticker and postage altogether to the UK.

Sounds as though I might go somewhere in France with my coloured sticker in place, but then they declare "high air pollution" and my sticker isn't the right colour to let me come home !  So I have to stay and wonder whether I can claim on Red  Pennant ? Ho, ho !

Mischievous!!!  But interesting to think about when we might read that in the 'Red Pennant let me down.....' stories!!

Apparently you can also come adrift if you hire a car with the 'wrong' sticker - and drive into an area where it isn't allowed.  Not only do you get the fine, but the hire company can levy an admin fee too!

I got one last year as we were in Lyon for a couple of days. As far as I could tell we were the only vehicle which had one. Do you think this maybe just another tourist tax ?

    Doug

There is a clearly marked sticky at the top of the page on this very subject. Whilst it mainly details previous discussions on the subject I have added Val's link to that sticky.

David/Anyone - do you know if the Caravan and Motorhome Club mentions the needs for these stickers in their travel guidance.  I've had a quick look this morning - but haven't time to read everything - and couldn't find it.  I think it ought to be part of the advice given to motorists going to Europe - especially as Dunkerque (port) is amongst the 'about to become clean air zones'!

I recently purchased a sticker for my towcar - just in case. Its diesel Tiguan and class 2.

When the new regime of exhaust testing regulations come in, we may all have to be re-classified!!

Thanks Val for the info and update.

Seems the e4.80 sticker is now almost a mandatory item for any future France bound travellers as its seem obvious there will be widespread future Departement announcements also. Await Club news & advice in a future monthly Mag ??

We're currently sunning ourselves in deepest Southern Spain having finally escaped, 8/1/18, to paddle (tow) our way down though France and were blissfully un-aware of the latest eco rules for our return run North.

I was aware of the previous major city based access requirement, which didnt and wouldnt affect us, but not the new latest Department and smaller towns one which will. We intended another overnight stopover to irritate the abrupt reception staff at Chartres Municipal in early March on the way back so we would be in a new region affected by the changes if implemented as per the update. I have now read also that the authorities though were going lightly on non French travellers initially - you hope ! Prefer to just apply at the very least.

We have today now managed the application and had email confirmation of payment and of my application. We are meeting up with my daughter who is flying out in a fortnight so hoping she will have maybe collected said sticker and brought it out with her. At least we have applied.

    Notes for eager applicants :-

You need your V5 Log book in hand.

Prior to starting the online form you really need to have done an advance copy of your V5 Log Book onto your computer to attach it as a file. It needs to be in the specified formats and only 400kb in size - good luck with that one and suggest you get in all ready in advance. The form timed out for me twice as was faffing re-formatting jpeg doc size.

At the end there is an option to print out a receipt but we got a similar email confirmation from them.

It asks for the Euro rating of your vehicle model Euro 5 ? Euro 6 ? etc.

    Happy travels M

If when you scan you use the save as function to save it as a jpeg you should be able to resize the original, and still be plenty big enough, even in colour to get under the 400kb size.

The one thing that makes me laugh about how daft the EU actually is, they can`t manage to come up with an emission setup which applies to all countries within it, instead of this mish mash of schemes. You can bet your life the French won`t understand it, half of them can`t even manage to get through their own toll booths!

I agree, it's 'barmy'! It's not just countries which have different schemes but cities as well!  Crazy.  Surely, one car, one sticker!!!

Does anyone know if it's mentioned in the Club magazine, or anywhere on this website (officially - not just as part of the Club Together forum)?

The CCC have a full page on their website giving information and links.  Is there anything similar on this website?

Given the preoccupation with homogenisation, you would think that this is something the EU would be centralising. Much more important than straight bananas, I would have thought.

Ordered our sticker 3 days ago received email today informing us that the Certificate would be in the post in the next few days.

Only one problem it's for a car registered in 1997. Despite completing the form correctly and enclosing a copy of the Registration Document that clearly shows the vehicle was register in 2010 they have issued a sticker for our cherished number and not the actual Vehicle!

Sianelen, can't coment on the dates but does it matter?  That's how it's  done, the sticker has your registration number on it and a 'scan' sketch thing which I assume can be checked by the police with a reader; if you get checked by them for any offence and they are having a bad day bet they will check it!  When you change car and transfer your plate you will need a new disc.

Comeyars - you may be right but we should have a Euro 5 sticker and they are sending us a Euro 2 sticker if the numbers make no difference why have them :(  Confused!

Are you sure?  I have a Euro 5 car (VW Tiguan)  but the sticker says 2, which is the category of car,  '1' being the latest..

None of the schemes seem to work like that.

    Our car is Euro 6

For Germany our sticker is green and is a 4.

For France it is yellow and is a 2.

Irrespective of the normal city zones which we don't take a car into. Given some of the rural areas within the newly monitored pollution zones, and for the asking price I ordered one today (yellow No2) just in case. It pays not to be caught out.

As we visit quite a few countries, will we still have a small viewing window on the car to look out of, in addition to the vignettes that will be on there. frown
