Electricity meters

So when did you get those rates PD?
I ask because we're also members of the C&CC and love The Gower so might be interested in getting a similar deal next year if it's available.
I'm assuming, possibly incorrectly, though, that it was in low season so a bit perplexed as to why you left it until August to start this thread!

It sounds like a rally to me. Perhaps discounted prices for a potential big crowd - you know how it goes.

Why do you want the club to change?
If it would help control pitch prices and give members more choice why would you not want to see electricity meters installed? My argument is it will do both of these things. That is proven by what others have already done. Is it really a change? Does it affect the way you use Club facilities CS? No it doesn’t. The distribution bollard will still be there for EHU, your lead or connections won’t change, you plug connection won’t change and there is nothing to stop you using as much or as little electricity as you like. So what changes? You will just need a card to pay for the electricity you use which you insert at the same time you walk over to the bollard to plug in. You could top up your card at the same time as you check in if you needed to.
The only sticking point, and the Club agrees, is the question of cost. Commercial sites don’t seem to have a problem with this and even some CLs have meters. Perhaps DK has hit the nail on the head pointing out that the Club has many sites to consider. It is much easier for a commercial site to make changes. The way I see it is potentially two things or possible three will in the future influence a Club decision. One is threatened energy shortages and another large rise in the cost of energy and the second is the wider introduction of electric vehicles and hybrids wanting to charge on site. The possible third scenario is the Club will become uncompetitive because it will have no choice but to increase pitch prices to cover the above two scenarios. In my view, it is pretty close to being uncompetitive now and this year it has not been my first choice site provider, in fact I have really enjoyed seeing what others have to offer.

Because it would drive pitch fee up due to the prohibitive cost of installing them with no way of getting this money back apart from higher pitch fees
One is threatened energy shortages
Been hearing this for so long now, years even, how the lights will go out. hasn't happened yet.
it is pretty close to being uncompetitive now
Just wondering what you are basing that on (apart from the fact that you don't use club sites) as I've informed you already but as you missed it I will post again:
on page 52 of the club's June magazine the director of marketing stated that since the rebrand there had been both an increase in membership and an increase in members using sites, over 2016 which had a been a great year
also on that page from the director of Finance: 2016 had been a successful year... revenue was up by £3.5 million and a surplus after tax of £4.2 million
I see that as being pretty good with attracting members and getting them on site and making a profit, So what is your basis for the club being uncompetitive ?
2 -
of course but I like to back my views up with some basic figures, can't you? Why do you think the club is pretty close to being uncompetitive
You have written this so you must have a reason?
2 -
In my view, it (CC) is pretty close to being uncompetitive now and this year it has not been my first choice site provider.
I have read similar comments before. If CC is pretty close to being uncompetitive it sounds as if there is not much to choose pricewise between it and similar competitors. That would indicate that it is competitive with similar site standards. That is certainly what I tend to notice during my touring times.

Yet another question deliberately dodged.
You have chosen to answer where (you say) you saw them, not when you got them.
4 -
some might say that's dodging the question (again)

PD - I think everyone agrees that CT is at its best when members help fellow members out with useful information rather than speculative posting on subjects likely to cause disagreement.
So in that spirit, can I ask you again when you got those rates? We really like The Gower but some of the sites (eg the ones at 3 Cliffs Bay and Pitton Cross) which we've used in the past can be prohibitively expensive. So, please help a fellow member by letting me now how and when I can stay at Bank Farm for £12 a night or thereabouts.
3 -
Sorry I overlooked your question Moulesy, it was not deliberate, the period I was there was the middle week of August and like I said I spotted it from browsing Out and About. I just rang a day in advance to make sure there were places.

Not at all, a genuine mistake and if you have ever looked at Out and About you would understand more fully about special stop overs offered by the C&CC. You cannot get those rates all the year. It may or may not be repeated next year.

Our and About being where C&CC list rallies and the like.
I said it before and I'll say it again. It sounds like a rally or a THS. Am I right, PD? A straight answer will be appreciated.
2 -
So the site owner has had to reduce the published tariff from £27.50 a night to £12 a night in August...??
That's shocking for a business in the leisure travel industry......!
Just in case they are following this thread and want a tip on how to improve their business....
Get rid of your raft of sneaky extra charges and rip out your very clearly unpopular electric meters, then you may not have to discount your prices to way less than half price in peak season....!!...
1 -
Thanks, Jay, for confirming my suspicions.
Surely PD hasn't been a little disingenuous?
3 -
Thanks for that PD and yes I've just found the details in last month's mag. Obviousness it's a THS on the rally field which is not a problem to us if we can stay in that area for £12 a night, but I assume that there are EHUs on the rally field - is that correct? And dogs would have to be welcomed too. Something we'd certainly consider for next year. But let's be honest, implying it was a commercial site or comparable to a club site was a bit naughty wasn't it?
3 -
Perhaps it was a bit naughty but I never said it was comparable to a Club site. The object was to show what other sites offered and how easy it was to use a card meter especially the fact you could get what you did not use back or in the case of a chain of common sites use the card at similar sites. You can bet that without the meters, there were 60 available, the price would more than likely have been nearer £17 per night. I went there not expecting to have electricity but in the event there were plenty of points available. Of course there were no motorhome facilities which is one reason why I would not even attempt to compare it to a Club site plus the views across the bay and the Bristol Channel were fabulous.
There was no problem with dogs and you could use all the site facilities.

Naughty? It was downright misleading, PD. Your evasiveness and vagueness does you no credit. You led us up the garden path, let us believe it was a normal site booking and failed to take the opportunity to clarify matters earlier but happily allowed the debate to continue. Perhaps that's what you wanted all along. Some would say that's the actions of a troll.
4 -
What exactly did you find evasive TW? What do you call not a normal site? Ok so I did not make a site booking and did not declare the name of the site until asked but at the same time I did point out I had obtained a discount, to quote my exact words "the site is Bank Farm on the Gower and I am getting a pitch discount courtesy of the C&CC" So where have I been evasive? If you still believe that you had better report me.

I'm grateful to PD for alerting me to the fact that there are THS' at Banks. (I know the site location, and love the Gower .....well, I was born there!) . Must remember to search outside my local SE/SW area when looking in future.
(EHU irrelevant ... don't need it! ).

And another quote of yours.......
DK, perhaps you don't recall my attempt at showing how pitch costs might change with the researched costs of fitting meters. I do not have access to it right now but when I do, I will be happy to re-publish it.
So on published tariffs for August for Bank Farm then for a caravan, two adults, H/S, awning and one dog it's £33 plus you have to pay extra for metered electric.
I'm struggling to see any cost cutting being passed on to the customer...

so in effect this whole thread was a total wind up.
3 -
Now Wind Up Electric Meters? There's a thought.

Your post certainly shines a new light and yes a big clockwork key in the side of the bollard. I wonder why the greener members on here haven't written to the club with this bright and electrifying idea, after all all it takes is one spark to start a new idea off. These keys could be kept and hired from reception so no key no EHU.
or perhaps they are not that green as to actually do any manual work -apart from winding people up on here?
