So it looks like the lowest cost option is to pay the bill yourself. So I think I'll stick to that. I paid £35 for the six monthly check up yesterday, using my Tesco Credit card. I got 4 extra points too for credit card spend! It's always nice to get rewarded for spending money which you would have to spend anyway if you used another means of payment.

Might be worth looking to see if you can get in with someone who does NHS work. £35 for a check up is one thing, but if you need more complexed work your CC would really take a hit. At least with the NHS the most you would have to pay for a course of treatment is limited to £244.30.

My wife likes the idea of finding an NHS dentist. It might not be too easy to find though because if they are cheaper, they are likely to be over-subscribed. Also, they may not be happy to do NHS work if it means less money for their practice. Some NHS dentists stop doing NHS work and go private for that reason. Especially in this area where they have to cover the higher prices of their premises.

We all have the option also of using a Private Dentist on a 'Pay as you go' scheme, ie you just pay for work required as and when you need it.

I've got today and tomorrow as days off from work. First job will be to fill up diesel for the Shogun. Then we plan to visit WWT and go on the boat safari whilst the rain holds off. Tomorrow is forecast rain all day. So best to do an outing today.

Your decision of course, but possibly wise to  check first what happens if you are under insured, as B2 commented.

We increased our cover by £1000 at renewal and the extra cost was about £8 for the whole year.  At that price, I would not take the risk.

Occupying the van a lot may possibly cut the risk of theft, but what about the risk of fire, or an accident on the road?

Sorry, not correct, OH says I should have asked her first!

The extra £1000 cover actually cost an extra £13, but as the renewal premium was £15 less than last year due to better security discounts, we ended up paying £2 less than last year.

The max NCD is 4 years, so we are well beyond that, so no decrease for that.

With two cars and a caravan, the overall cost of insurance is not cheap. In the event of a fire or accident, there will be excess to pay on the car as well. Some excess reduces the premium because whilst the insurance company takes most of the financial risk, I take a much smaller and therefore, more affordable part of the risk. That keeps my premium more affordable too.  If my portion of the risk is less than £6000, I would be able to cover that myself, through available credit on my credit cards. If more, than I might need a bank loan which I could get at 3 percent interest through my bank.

It might never happen, KjellNN! Like you say, it never happened to you, hence your more than 4 years NCD.

Unfortunately it did happen,   but more than 4 years back.

Yes, insurance can be very expensive, good to hear you have thought it though and have a plan, we all deal with things differently.

Then again in might happen Malcolm. If I was in your position I would be more concerned with what we would do while the caravan was fixed or replaced, in the event of an accident or fire. That could potentially take months. Even if your tent survived, the prospect of living in it for a long period if it was winter time is hardly appealing.

In that event a new caravan would have to be ordered. I think that would take 3 months. We lived in a tent for 3 months before this caravan was delivered to us and we managed although admittedly, it was the beginning of March then. I agree, getting through the winter in a tent might be much harder. However, I think it's unlikely my insurers will agree to increasing cover to three months hotel accommodation, so I think I've got no choice but to hope it never happens!

My wife still has property in China which was used as a language school. It could be used as living accommodation temporarily, if necessary, so perhaps three months there whilst waiting for delivery of the new caravan.

If the worst happened, you could probably find some holiday lets that would be glad of some winter business, might even be happy to negotiate on rates.

Bit dismal today so far. rain first thing has now stopped but still dull and chilly outside.

So today work inside has started, OH has started on stripping wallpaper in the dining room, I've given the new door frame a coat of undercoat paint, its looking good so next coat will be the gloss coat.

Need to take time out later to look at bank accounts we each have a savings one that is coming to end of term. Thinking of opening a current and savings account for OH with TSB (he doesn't have one there) we put all the savings in my name when we retired as I'm a non tax payer. Since the recent changes to tax on savings it means OH can now open more accounts and benefit from the better interest rates the same as me.

PS. My yearly payment to Denplan is less than I would have to pay if I went private for the same treatments and of course the added benefit that if I should have a problem when we are away (like last year) I just contact Denplan and a dentist is found for me and treatment carried out at no cost to me.

Yes, that might be the best option as it would mean I could continue to work in my present job thereby keeping an income flow. That's provided I can get one in this area.

Managed to knock one rear bottom corner on a very low down piece of metal that was not visible in the mirrors when I was reversing.  embarassed

This caused a small crack in the rear panel, which is apparently made of some material that cannot be repaired, so we had to have an entire new rear panel fitted.

Now I always send OH out to check that there are no unseen hazards before reversing!

Poston Mill was fine.  Yes, there is a restaurant but we didn't visit.  We were there for a family do close by   Some of the roads a round here are a bit iffy, but the main road isn't too bad.

No, it was just a little knock, and a crack only about 3 inches long, but both our dealer and the insurance assessor confirmed thay the only fix was a new panel, which surprised me.  Our only caravan claim since 1971.

Our excess was the same whatever the fix, so who am I to argue with the experts?

Over my lifetime I have had one car written off, not my fault, plus  I ended up with a broken arm and off work for 2 months.

Then on another occasion and a different car, a van bumped me onto the crash barrier on the motorway once.  With the same car, a ship unloading pipes managed to drop a pipe almost on my car,  plus on another occasion someone drove out of a side road into my rear wing.  That was an unlucky car!

In Glasgow, many years back, we were rear ended by a bus, and on another occasion more recently and in a different car, rear ended  by a small car.

Driving Volvos with towbars, we drove away, the bus had to be towed, the car too!

Another day off work today. Just got up and sitting out in the awning with a cup of tea. Nice and cool this morning. The sun's shining as I type this, fair weather today it seems but maybe some rain this afternoon. I think that means it will stay cool, like yesterday.

Yesterday, I filled the Shogun with diesel at Tesco pfs. It cost £36 to fill it full as it already had over half a tank, so another 36 points plus 9 extra points for Tesco credit card spend. Yesterday was the last day to collect points for this quarters statement.
