What's Poston Mill like these days, David? We stayed there many, many years ago in our tenting days and keep thinking about returning although I seem to remember a big disadvantage, for us anyway, is that there was little opportunity to walk anywhere direct from the site. I also seem to remember there was a restaurant either on site or very near the entrance?

Have a great time in Cornwall (and elsewhere) - hope we've left some sunny weather for you! smile

Is it one of the new type that allows you to switch supplier easily?

Thanks Brue.  We do have a wildlife 'target list'. Beavers, otters, sea eagles, golden eagles amongst others.  Whatever we see and do will be a joy though.

The forecast of rain didn't kick in until late afternoon, wind has dropped and the rain is very gentle, more a heavy mist than rain.

Went out after breakfast for some food shopping, a trip to the garden centre and B&Q's. Didn't buy any plants frown had a look at the wallpaper and paint in B&Q's saw 1 paper that I liked but the paint can't make my mind up yet, need to think about it for a day or to.

I started the 5 - 2 diet  to see if that will make any difference to my weight loss, I'm slipping a bit from Slimming World so thought I'd shake it up for awhile, today is one of my 500 calorie day's not easy but doable with planning.

    Have a good trip OP

Malcolm, don't you have a NHS dentist, check ups are free with them.

That's good, we would like a smart meter.

We were with British gas and they sent us an invitation to ring in to arrange to get one last year.  OH went through the whole thing then mentioned that we have solar PV panels, that immediately brought things to a halt.

Apparently they have not yet got a smart meter that can cope with solar panels, but they registered our interest and promised to let us know when the problem was resolved.  Hiwever, since then we have switched supplier.

Heard something recently regarding these meters, the newer ones will allow you to change supplier, but apparently some companies are still fitting the older ones whixh will not, so probably just as well we could not go ahead!

Was lovely here at 7am, but clouded over by 11.  Dull since then, really looking like rain is on the way now.  Very warm though.

New door linings almost complete, the door stop has to be rebated into the lining, as does the intumescent strip.  It is a fire resistant door as a 3 storey townhouse.

Hopefully I can do a trial fit tomorrow, mark hinge and latch positions, then have it ready for fitting on Saturday.

OH is looking at ovens.  We have decided not to repair our almost 30 year old Miele, and OH has decided that she really wants a double oven as our big combi  microwave is also on its last legs.

A double oven is of course too tall for the existing oven space, so rather than buying a whole new kitchen(!), she has agreed that I should try to remake the existing solid oak door under the oven to fit the smaller space.  If that does not work out to her satisfaction, then I will have to  buy some oak and make a plain drawer front instead.

The plan then is to move the sofa out of the kitchen/diner, as we never sit in there these days, replace the big radiator with a plinth heater so we can move or pine display units to that wall, then fit new units in their place.

This will let us bring the tall freezer into the kitchen, add a tall storage unit, and the rest will be base and wall units........OH has it all planned in her head!

I can feel a lot of work, for me, coming up!

Still, worth it if it means she stops muttering about a totally new kitchen!!

Examination (check up) is free here, treatment costs.  Scale and polish is £10 odds,  We always have at least scale and polish.

That just might turn out to  be your only option, which would not be good in winter, so not to be treated lightly.

Have you now  looked at your sum insured, with plans to increase it if necessary?  If not, you will get a nasty shock if you ever have a claim.

We all hope never to need to claim, but the  possibility is always there and we need to be realistic about it.

We have had a lovely day today meeting up with friends on The Great Central Railway. Spent the day on the train getting in and off at the various lovely restored stations, looking round the engine sheds, eating our picnic, drinking tea and generally catching up.

Have a lovely trip DVB. I hope your car is now behaving itself.

Went to an open evening at Ball Colegrave after work. They are one of the UK's biggest suppliers of seeds and plants to commercial growers and local authorities. They open open up to the public one day a year for charity. The flower beds and plants were amazing!  smile So may varieties, and colours. They were also selling some of the plants off, came away with a few for the garden.

JVB66 really pleased your new Border Collie is settling in. They are wonderful intelligent dogs. Surprised "Rosa" isn't interested in playing with toys and ball, our collie just loves his tennis ball.laughing

Millie glad you had a good day out, messing about on trainswink

Don't move South then, I reckon a check up and clean would be around £50. That is non NHS BTW. We have been with the same dental practise since we moved to MK 38 years ago. Our current dentist was originally our previous dentist's dental nurse!!! Years ago there was a big shortage of NHS dentists in Milton Keynes so it was difficult to change anyway so we stayed and if you will excuse the pun have had to bite the bullet on costs!!!

Thought check ups were free across the NHS.

I have Denplan cover so pay a fixed sum every month, for that I get 2 check ups and scale clean and polish a year, all xray's, fillings, root treatment, crown work is covered by the plan. OH is NHS though but he gets check up every 6 mths and if he needs anything else he contributes towards his treatment.

Its the old, old story. Pay The NHS a few quid or pay Denplan even more!

Depends upon the state of yer gnashers as which way you win!

I must say I thought check up was free on NHS everywhere it certainly is for children. But I can't verify that personally we've been Denplan customers for years. Again shortage of dentists and OH phobia meant we wanted to stay with same dentist so we too bit the bullet. Kids stayed with him until free dental care ended, at end of uni I believe, son with Denplan too now still at our practice but different dentist. We all pay fixed amount per month OH and I have the pleasure of 3 monthly check up and scale and polish deep joy! Son 6 monthly.

OH recently broke 2 crowns one either side of his mouth, crowns included in Denplan but one has to pay lab fees, £483 😲😲 so goodness only knows how much the total would have been without Denplan.

NHS in England charges £20.60 for check up, X-rays and scale / polish.£56.30 if you need fillings, tooth out or other more complexed things. Or £244.30 for crowns, dentures and lab work. Unless of course you qualify for free treatment. We have been with the same dentist for 38 years. Trouble is he is not much younger than us, so will eventually have to switch to someone younger at the practice.☹️

For years, starting when we were at work, we joined HSA (now Simply Health) as we got an employee discount. This entitled us to a 50% refund on various treatments and new glasses. That was one of the reasons we didn't join Denplan. Unfortunately the HSA prices went up and up and I did a few calculations and found that we always seem to be paying out more in contributions that we got back. We now save a small amount each month in a separate account and pay half and take the other half out of the savings when we need treatment. We seem to be slightly better off doing it this way. It's fine for routine stuff but when you get to crowns and other expensive treatment you have to raid other sources of money!

Oh yes. I joined the Hospital Saturday Fund when I first started work and got 50% refunds on glasses and dental work possibly other stuff but you had to claim it after work was completed. I believe that had name changes. I can't remember when I stopped but like you I worked out I wasn't even breaking equal, even over combined years.

That would surely mean having to pay a higher premium when I've only just got happy about the reduced premium for the no claims bonus. In our circumstances, with the lower risk of loss due to the caravan being constantly occupied, it might be better to take the risk of the remote possibilty of the balance of loss, myself. At least most of the loss would be covered by the insurance so the balance would be like an excess.

It doesn't cost me anything in interest because I get a zero percent deal from Tesco Credit card. Also it doesn't affect my bank account for the same reason i.e. the money paid is paid from my credit card and not my bank account.

What I was relieved to see from my tax account was that my overall income is above my personal allowances. If it was less than my personal allowances, that would be worrying because it could mean that my income is not enough to live on. Also my PAYE account for the next tax year is showing an estimated overall income higher than my personal allowance so that working for Pizza Hut has not resulted in any drop in income. It means that there's enough money to survive!

In the past I have had old vans. Bought at 7 years old and kept around 13 years. I never insured contents and undervalued the values greatly. I was prepared to take the risk and could afford to replace. The inurance was too clean up after a total loss accident etc.

Now I do not insure contents. What might be stolen in that regard I can afford to replace.

British Gas fitted our smart meter last week. We have solar panels. About two weeks ago they told staff that smart meters can now be offered to homes with micro generation

sadly the tariff that offered free energy on Saturday or Sunday has ended which we wanted to switch to

I'd imagine other providers can now offer smart meters as well now
