Ely has a sensible car park system. Free for 3 hours and lots of them enabling exploring of the city. Do a bit, move to another car park. There are more than sufficient car parks

Nearest CC / camc / wotever site is Cambridge Cherry Hinton

Spent 6 months working there recently. Family came up for the half term holidays and had great days out. Went to Norwich and Gt Yarmouth on the train, into Cambridge. Daughter would love to go back. I stayed in a village pub tongue-out

One  thing  there  that  I  do  not  like  Millieh  --  I never  have  &  never  will,  PAY  to  go  into  a  Church  or  Cathedral ** !!

I  do  pay  for  the  guided  tours  if  there  are  any,  tho!

Scampered  round  the  Roof  Tour  At  Ely  some  years  back  but  ended  up  ricking  my  back  !  could  it  have  been  Divine  Retribution  I  wonder  undecided

**  I  don't  mind  making  a  Donation  for  the  upkeep  or  a  Special  Project  and  for  the  privilege  of  taking  photo's  but  I  am  of  the  old  school  on  this  subject  --  Its  a  Church  or  Cathedral  I'm  visiting  for  whatever  reason,    not  a  museum  or  similar  commercial  enterprise.

I'm OK with paying a reasonable fee to look at large old buildings - if I want to see them continue in good repair and be maintained for the future they have to be paid for. It certainly costs far more than most of us realise. I bulked at the charge for the cathedral bit did pay to do the stained glass museum and got very good views of the cathedral as a bonus. 😆

I want to revisit Ely, we enjoyed a swift visit, easy motorhome parking I seem to recall,

Edit after ABM edit Churches don't have congregations to contribute these days and tithes have gone as have covenants , not the right word but can't remember correct one! On properties where they were responsible for the upkeep or repairs of some religious buildings such as channels. Sadly people will not donate, if they donate at all, to visit such places.  In NZ they often have events that anyone can attend but ask for a gold coin donation that's either a $1 or $2 very cheap really so if each person chucks in $1those who can afford more often contribution more, they get a decent amount. Maybe signage with a suggested donation is the answer?

I've  certainly  no  objection  to  contributing for  the  upkeep,  B2  but  to  go  into  a  cathedral  &  find  a  row  of  turnstiles  (  just  like  a  football  ground  or  similar )  as  I  found  at  York  on  my  last  visit  is  a  right  turn  off.

My  normal  approach  is  to  head  for  the  shop  if  any,  and  ask  for  permission  for  using  my  camera  --  only  ever  refused  once  and  that  was  at  Durham  Cathedral  --  and  I  pay,  willingly,  what  ever  charge  is  levied.  Even  Canterbury  only  asked  for  a  Fiver  money-mouth.

After  I  have  finished  admiring  & photographing  I  head  back  to  the  shop,  purchase  a  goodly  selection  of  memento's,  and  add,  in  the  relevant  box,  a  donation  as  representative  of  the  enjoyment  I  have  received.  I  also  ask  for  a  Tax  avoiding  envelope  !!

I  certainly  have  no  objection  whatsoever  to  your  last  sentence  about  a  "Suggested  Donation"

EasyT, I agree with others that Ely really is worth a visit. There is an AS site (adult only) at Chatteris/March which isn't too far from Ely. Funnily enough we stayed at this site when it was just a CL and fishing lakes. they still have the CL, separate from the main site. A nice quiet site.

Expensive day today as paid for my new reading glasses plus gas service found that we'll need new piping to two of the radiators. I wonder how much KjellN charges and whether he'll be passing this way on his way south?

One Barn Owl box erected today - I wonder how to invite the barnies and ban the rooks!  I shan't be happy if grey squirrels take up residence either.

Unfortunately ABM cathedrals are VERY expensive to run and maintain and they get absolutely NO money from anyone towards that and have to be self maintaing which is why many are in dire financial difficulty and why so many charge to go round. Peterborough doesn't charge and also the usual tours are free although they charge for specially themed and tower tours. They also charge fif photography permits. They are having to raise money in other ways which some people are not happy about but needs must. Donations from visitors are always VERY welcome.smile

Went for a walk in local estate and stopped for lunch very tasty chicken and bacon ceasar salad, snack tea all that's required now. Jolly chilly wind didn't really have enough clothing on, should have put coats on rather than body warmer! Friends down for cuppa and catch up. Just catching up on here and guess what? Getting good error after error when trying to open threads, then it'll open but won't go back 😯😲.

Yes since my earlier post about 530pm. I'm bored so been trying on and off.  Internal error if you're lucky nothing if you're not! Completely random and jolly frustrating.

No Helen, sadly I dont think so. He cleaned my Clio as a celebration of it passing it's MOT. I think it will now have to wait another year before it is cleaned again.laughing. The XTrail got dented in a car park a couple of weeks ago and got cleaned a celebration after it's repair. It always has to be a special occasion.laughing

Hope you have a lovely time when you go to see your son in Manchester. Are you taking the caravan?

Have a good time Francis, we've got rain on the way tonight and it's a lot colder.

Hope the web site is now working properly. Strange there was no message about maintenance.

New pipework to 2 radiators?  Have you got a leak somewhere?

Been raining, quite heavily, for most of the day, hope it will be better tomorrow.

It's been a long day, been at the guide hall from 10.30 am till 8.30pm, feet are worn out.  Everything now ready for their coffee morning tomorrow, and plenty of helpers turned up so OH managed to escape having to clean 40 odd tables.

Found quite a few of the cups etc  had not been properly washed after someone borrowed them for a function last June, so there was much muttering from OH as she had to wash them before the tables  could  be set!

We woke up to rain this morning. Made a pot of tea and having our first cup now. What's it like where you are, KjellNN? Have you got the better weather you were hoping for?

The boss let us go at 18:45 yesterday. Normally he asks us to work later on Fridays but yesterday was a quiet day. Perhaps the Cheltenham festival coupled with St. Patricks Day had something to do with it! Maybe some of our usual customers were in the pub sipping a pint of Draught Guiness!

Anyhow, we were glad of an early night after all the travelling, packing and unpacking!

It seems awfully quiet on here this morning! It's surely not that early! Is everyone still asleep after a night on the tiles? Did you all have too much Guinness last night? Or have the leprechauns been getting to you?wink

Good news your car passed the mot Millie.

Yes, we are taking the caravan, we found a CL about 15 miles from Sale where our son now lives. It's on the edge of the peak district, hoping its ok so we can use it for future visits.

You will be off soon too.smile

It was blowing a hooley last night and having done a bit of an inspection this morning I've found that some of the flashings to the car port roof have been loosened. If it ever dries up I'll chance getting the ladder out and see if I can fix it.😫

The rain seems to have stopped here but it remains overcast. It doesn't look like we'll be seeing much sun today! It might stay dry though.

It's usually a special occasion before our cars get cleaned too.  Usually I sister on cleaning it before we go away on a long holiday - don't know why though - it cones back like it's never been done.

Perhaps this email is the jolt I need to get the big car done.  Mind you, the caravan needs doing as well!  laughing
