I’ve been looking at the use of the forum over the first week of this year and compared it with the same week (1-7 Jan) last year.

It had become apparent that the amount of activity had declined and I wondered by how much.

In the first week of 2015, 794 different usernames were observed on CT. (There were a lot of kitchen spammers at the time, so they were removed from the count).

This year, there were 691 different usernames observed over the same period.

The number actually posting to the forum was 388, dropping to 356 this year, a fall of around 10%.

An average of 260 different users were seen on CT each day in 2015 whereas only 235 different users a day are seen just now.

Must admit that I try not to get involved with fractious debates anymore, I bite my tongue and give a like to the next post that I agree with. That way, I don't encourage those looking for an argument. There are a few more trolls about lately old and new. I also use other forums. As well as fun& trivia.....Cool

The various debates don't seem to have the same value nowadays. It is possible to visit CT and not see anything of interest or worth posting a reply. Probably it has all been said before and a lot of subjects have been flogged to death. The other reason I suspect is that long term posters are running at purple star level  and to gain further advancement, if that is your thing, requires tens of thousands of points. A move from my current 5 reds requires 10,000 points and I cannot get excited about that.

I think the stars are an irrelevance when it comes to usage. It's the amount of interesting debate that keeps a forum active.

Write your comments here...Precisely CY.  Which means that this forum has one foot in the grave.

Its a shadow of its former self when compared to the good old days of stimulating debate and friendly repartie. Sadly gone for ever,  as is many of members who made this possible.

Never mind, there are plenty of other Caravanning forums on the net for that sort of  debate.

Does not seem like much of a decline to me and bearing in mind about a dozen "star chasers" took themselves  off a few months  ago I woild think genuine  posts are holding up.

With respect, David, you call them "star chasers" with no possible justification. I think they made it clear they were fed up with the constant moaning, repeated highjacking of threads and attempts by a small number of posters to dominate threads to the point where other folk simply gave up debating with them. Me, I chose to stick around but I know which section have my sympathy! threads

I think Ro's decision on Dogs could account for  quite a bit  of that.

Not everything is in decline. The number of posts per user has increased by 4% and the number of posts per discussion increased by 24%. Could that be because all the ‘doggie’ talk has been focused into one thread?

I quite like these little snippets of information Rogher, thanks for your efforts. I don't think the comments about star chasers from others are helpful, we're all stuck with the star system. i did hear a radio programme about "rewards" on social media and the psychology of giving and receiving "likes" apparently it gives us all a little burst of serotonin which can be addictive.Laughing

Very little doggie talk goes on these days - only 50 posts on Caravanning with dogs thread in the last 4 months. Similarly the number of posts in the Pets thread has slowed to a dribble Happy

May be the doggie chat has stopped is because when we have a sensible debate with input from both sides of the camp ,and then a long comes a members who has to take it to another level and make it personal ,so the thread gets closed

The very nature of posting will accumulate stars and, for some, it would appear to be a motivation. So long as the unhelpful contributions remain in the ‘Trivia’ section all sides should be satisfied. I think the real value of this forum comes from the help and guidance shared between members. Maybe the new software will reset our statuses and measure activity in a different way.

PS, I've just given you a small dose of serotonin, brue.

This is a much bigger forum, it's probably easier to control smaller forums where the membership is under 200 and consists mainly of regular known posters.

I am another who took the decision not to post as much a few months ago. I found an alternative forum where sensible debate isn't hijacked, where everyone can express their interesting opinions and thoughts without feeling stressed, either because they travel
with a pet, or children, or choose to tour in a particular way or particular place. I am pleased to be able to say that a lot of very nice, very friendly fellow CT members have also decided to get involved. It would be lovely if a few more of those who value
this kind of forum chat came along and joined in. No one gives a hoot about how many "stars" other posters have, people are valued for the interesting, amusing and helpful information they decided to post. We have a lot of online fun, we share jokes, we share
laughter, and to my knowledge no one derides anyone else or their choices to score points. A lot of us remain members of CT, and are looking forward to the new CT, and like me still swop ideas with a lot of the nice posters who are still around on CT. We haven't
gone away, or been forced out, we are just waiting for the rebirth of what brought a lot of us together a long time ago.Happy

I see we've had new members joining in recently which is good and I think a lot of us are looking forward to future developments on here. Incidentally I wish the the new temporary forum manager well when Ro goes off on maternity leave.

That isn't how it works HD, with all due respect. It is well managed, and has the kind of filter systems that hopefully will be available on here in the future. It is much smaller of course, it is only a year old, but new members  join almost every day,
some only post very rarely, others post daily.

Brue, I agree with you, lovely to see lots of newish posters using CT. Just hope their early posts are not pounced on too quickly and that they get the help and interest they deserve.Happy

I was invited to join and refused. Its a strange worldLaughing

Fascinating. Do tell more as you've made this claim elsewhere as well.

It's not invitation only so this does sound very odd

What 'filter systems' would screen someone like Husky from being allowed to join a forum....?

ive joined numerous forum, including the one inthink you are referring to, i dont remember any vetting/screening of any kind.

normally, you supply an email address, user name, password, and, if you wish, a bit of 'info' highlighting your interests, location etc....

why would any of this preclude someone from joining, or is there more to this than meets the eye?....
