As usual, you are twisting things, David - "defending the indefensible" - really? I have said, more than once, that I simply cannot understand those who do not take up the offer of a free vaccination - you want it to be made compulsory, I don't - as long as we're being told that vaccination is not 100% effective and whilst there is, admittedly a vanishingly small chance of unpredictable side effect, I don't consider those who decline "indefensible" - ill informed, socially negligent, selfish possibly but we live in a free society and that is their right however much we might disagree.

I was ‘stupid’ enough to refuse & took the hard route-lost weight, cut out red meat, dropped dairy products. I not only cut my cholesterol levels but reversed early diabetes🤷🏻♂️. There are 2 sides to every story.

Of course it’s my view. As are your posts on the subject. However, I’m not the one calling another’s views crass, none of the definitions of which are particularly nice and certainly something I would never level at another poster. As it seems this thread is heading in the direction of many others lately and destined for closure, I will wish one and all a Merry and safe Christmas and retire to my Christmas dinner prep.

But isn't that the point, anti vaxxers are taking up beds, which other folk who are waiting for life saving treatment can't have. So which ever way you look at it there is a possibility that someone is going to suffer unnecessarily and possibly die.
I know who I would give the bed to and it would be the antuvaxxer, you reap what you sow.

Not all unvaccinated people are "anti vaxxers" though - I'd reserve that particular description for those who try to peddle fake news about the vaccine to dissuade others from taking up the offer. Some, perhaps many, decline the vaccine for principled reasons, albeit completely incomprehensible to you or me. So who is to judge whether an individual arriving at hospital needing treatment is one or the other? And as I suggested earlier there are other occasions when folk who act against medical advice turn out to need urgent treatment.

But we are not talking about genuine reasons for not getting vaccinated.
We are talking about those cretins that think it's a joke, that think it won't happen to them. I know, my DIL is one, pig headed selfish and stubborn.
It really upsets me to see folk who are in pain daily not getting the treatment they need and deserve because of one of these type of people.
CY, some of the cases you mentioned they are getting quite strick with. If you are a smoker awaiting an operation the you will be told to quit or no op. Obese folk are told to lose weight or no op. Alcoholics are similarly told to stop drinking or they risk death.
Its a shame that the adverts/info on TV are not more blunt. Get the vaccine or die.

I have a family member who is suffering as a result of not being able to receive her usual quantity and quality of oxygen bottles to alleviate a lung problem. The manufacturers are flat out supplying them to hospitals.
She has been asked to restrict her movements to virtually become not only housebound but almost immobile as she needs the oxygen to help her when walking about the house. Is she delighted that there are reports of hospitals being overrun by people refusing to be vaccinated for whatever reason? One of many who has followed all of the advice and guidelines and what for?
I couldn't condone anyone being turned away at hospitals but there must be some sort of comeback for those people who are endangering the lives of other people through their inaction. Maybe not financial as that is a scatter-gun effect that will take down innocent by standers (children etc.) but certainly one of freedom of movement. No Vaccines, no footie attendance etc. I understand the possibility of being infected and fully vaccinated but LFTs should help and at least those people have tried to help society, as well as themselves.

The NHS don’t judge, at least at the source of treatment. They will carry on administering to all those who have eaten, drunk, smoked, injected, exercised, carnally indulged and been guilty of making a stupid decision at one time or another, without bias. So that’s possibly a very large percentage of the population taken over a lifetime.
I don’t particularly have any sympathy with the stand of those who can be vaccinated but won’t, but given that the vast majority of health care goes on those who over do it on my earlier categories, the anti vaxxer stance fits neatly into the “stupid decision” category. It just a bit more stupid given the overall current circumstances, that’s all.
If you are going to penalise stupidity, then don’t stop, but penalise the the smokers, the drinkers, those too fat and unfit to function, those having unsafe sex, those injecting drugs, those who take part in dangerous sports. 🤷♀️ All of a sudden, lots more people appear unworthy of treatment taken as a whole.Many conditions and diseases are genetic, or strike randomly through no fault of the person concerned, and of course our ageing population has body parts that simply wear out. All such folks suffering such bad luck are deserving of being at the very front of the queue for NHS resources, but it’s very unfair, and unethical to judge one specific group without looking at the wider considerations. It’s a rare Western human that doesn’t have some small vice or other that can do without medical treatment of some sort.
So, in short, let those without sin, cast the first stone!

Taking a break from this heated discussion can I just wish anyone involved in the Emergency services including shop workers, bin men/women/posties etc., Volunteers at vaccination centres etc.etc. a hearty Thank you all for keeping my life ticking over as near to normal as could be hoped for.

Good for you Rocky. That’s my route as well. Nowhere near needing statins thankfully, but my lockdown this year has been all about taking a long hard look at my lifestyle and changing it. My OH is in the genetically hard luck group, got both Cancer and a dicky ticker from his parents, but his level of fitness has seen him through everything at the moment.
I was a bit surprised when he had his heart attack, and spent some time on the recovery Wards visiting him. Most of the predominantly male patients weren’t as I expected, overweight. I mentioned this to one of the nurses, and her reply made the penny drop. Those really overweight simply don’t make it usually. A sobering (if you will excuse the pun) thought.

I second this as well WN. We have family members who have worked throughout the whole shebang. Ambulance, Fire, Police, Care, Teachers etc… 👏👏👏

Thanks for the advice👍🏻, I should’ve but I needed time to get my youth out of me. It’s a big world(or it was when I was young) & I needed to explore it, so I did. . .A bit too well. When I grew up I made changes & gladly they got me to my 60’s-Still surfing, still paddle boarding, canoeing & camping. I did good-for me that is with the least amount of destructive drugs going into me as possible🙂

And I can understand why you feel that way, but I pose the question again - who decides (on admission to hospital, maybe critically ill) whether an individual has a "genuine reason/principle" for being unvaccinated or is a "cretin"?

There is something I’ve found out over the years-getting older is not a negative if we keep active & keep our weight down. To some it would be logic but I am obviously a slow starter😂. The Tree work pushed me to keep my fitness levels up too. If anyone will beat the odds it’s your OH for sure TDA. The active lifestyle is a boon for the mental health so power to him👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Lucky for him he has you to race against😊

It’s a lifelong lifestyle for him Rocky. He didn’t actively seek promotion beyond Station Manager as he didn’t want to end up a Desk Jockey, he worked out on the Fire Station when at work, and after always cycling or running to work, hit the cycling trail big style on retirement. Such a shock to his system getting the Big C, but it’s in his family genes sadly. The Heart Attack was possibly all the stress from two years of surgery and chemo. He had a rough time in hospital second time in, I would have liked to have throttled a good number of the so and so’s who were on the same Ward, but hey ho, he’s still here, doing ok and having a ball. I used to be superfit, but ended up a desk jockey, every promotion was a few more pounds on😱 But I am getting there now, and enjoying it.

Had a Phone call on Thursday afternoon from Farmer C informing me that my monthly prescription was ready for collection at my local AND I should ask for a box of 'tests' when collecting 'em.
Grabbed a supermarket carrier & dashed off { slowly of course } to obey the instructions.
Arrived to be the only customer they had at that point and put on my silly hat to introduce myself as " Elf and Safety " -- got a giggle out of the staff and my carrier filled by them BUT , alas, the comment - we have no bananas oops sorry should have said We have no Tests available, had none for a week or more, so sorry.
Suppose I can repeat the request for 'em on line like last time -- well it keeps the posties employed now that the seasonal rush is over {

I have spent a considerable time trying to work out how to start this post. Some of my attempts are below and I can’t decide so I will leave it up to you to use the one you like best; or make up your own.
Today I had the best Christmas lunch ever…
This lunchtime I heard an angel sing…
I’m not a true believer but today I may have seen a small miracle…
…this morning into the early p.m. I completed a short shift at the jabbing centre. Surprisingly there were a good number of people of all ages keen to get their jabs. In keeping with the season we had Christmas carols playing quietly in the background and true to form we had our own “crusty” anti-vaxer on duty just outside the door; polite, persistent, but not a problem. Towards lunch time one of the other vaccinators, a lovely and very attractive Polish lass, started to sing along with the carols. Short of Karen Carpenter I have never heard a voice so clear and pure. As she got into her stride with Silent Night in I assume Polish, the place came to a standstill. Even the anti-vaxer came in and perched on a desk corner. Cheeky yes, but she was immediately offered a jab and shocked us all when with feigned reluctance, she accepted. Name, DoB, etc. were checked and a jab administered in record time and discreet a round of applause given. So to lunch, half a slightly dried turkey and cranberry sandwich, a mini mince pie, and the remains of a cold cup of coffee. Never has food tasted so good, but I am looking forward to dinner this evening. Happy Christmas.

.If they regularly stand outside the Vaccination Sites and see hundreds of customers coming and going without even the faintest sound of sirens etc then, surely, it must put their beliefs under extreme pressure, must it not ??

Be warned. Have needle will travel and jab. I have yet to be asked but all I need is a couple of heavies, a clerk and we could be knocking on your door "offering" a jab. Now, back to the present. After the Port should the digestive be Brandy, Almagnac, Cognac, or Calvados? Decisions, decisions, decisions 😜.

Today I got a phone text from NHS telling me to get my Booster jab sorted, pronto. Wouldn't have minded too much but I was B-Jed nearly two months ago !

I am suffering from what was a bad dose of a cold?,not so bad now ,sore throat ,headacre gone, bit of a cough still,, and when i did my daily report to Imperial college ,i was asked to have a drive through test at a local centre ,which i managed to get at a local centre this morning,at 0830 would be only have to leave OH for a short period,
This morning i get a text telling me my appointment is cancelled as the centre is closed ,the nearest centre is now Stevenage ,which would mean at least two hours leaving OH,not an option
If i have a postal test it may arrive tomorrow?
