Coronavirus: Stay or go

Our 'either side of us' neighbours in France grow enough grapes to make their own, and very pleasant it is too. We managed to grow about 250g worth last year so about a teaspoon's worth of wine, and had hopes of a better [couldn't be much worse] yield this year; that is, until the neighbours at the rear of our hovel allowed their bl**dy goats to break into our garden and scoff the lot ...
I'm confident that our 2020 grape harvest will sit a wee way below premier cru standard But, there again, I'll never know unless our neighbours send us photos!

Thought this, if it works, sums it up very succinctly

a mixed bag of figures from Italy...
unfortunately the highest daily number of deaths recorded... however the number of new cases is the fifth day running below the peak of the 22nd
with regard to Spain...
again, perhaps a tiny crumb to cling to...lowest number of new cases for five days....the first downward figure since 22nd......also lowest number of deaths for four days since 23rd.

The head of Italy's hospital care services [I think the equivalent of Chief Medical Officer] has said today that Italy has yet to reach the peak, although it is obviously encouraging that the rate of increase is falling.
The Independent is reporting that Italy's death rate today is 919, the largest increase on record [report filed about 1730 today GMT]. I think countries are changing the time of the cut off for Press Releases, because I saw the 'rate of increase falling' in the first paragraph this afternoon [1459 Guardian Blog].
UK has also changed its reporting cut off time, but the figures are now back to a full 24 hours period coverage, albeit that the figures are effectively 1 day old.
The Guardian Blog noon summary today says that Spain has recorded its highest daily total of deaths at 769, a total of 4,858 and a daily increase of just under 8,000 in the confirmed cases.
France seems to be in a real mess with reports that the Alsace region is so overwhelmed with new cases that the elderly are not being offered treatment, but are going straight to 'end of life' care with pain relief drugs.
Whatever the figures, it's a desperately grim picture, and one which seems destined to get a lot worse before the recovery phase starts.

Don’t forget BB, it’s a good website, but occasionally countries alter the way figures are recorded. UK did this last week, one day figures were down, but than a much larger rise than usual. It’s an interesting site though. I look in daily, and also look at daily figures for local authorities around UK.
America looks like it could be shocking☹️

I use Worldometer which is publishing daily the worldwide numbers.
by sticking to one source i felt that any trends would be more valid.
i havent been checking the council/country sources of the data, nor read the Guardian....
I'm assuming the collators (John Hopkins Uni??) verify these.
perhaps a Guardian reader could update JHU and CT?

+1, also ‘roylab stats’ another running live updates👍🏻

Yes the Worldometer figures here as well. I just update the Guardian’s daily figures as well. It’s enough for me at the moment, it shows all four areas of South Yorks separately, so is very useful locally. Sheffield is bad, but then it’s a big student filled city, with lots of big hospitals. Other areas are nowhere near as bad, but rising.
I have done a shop today for us and Mum, first time out (other than a very isolated dog walk once a day) Chose Aldi, and very glad I did. Well organised, one in, one out system, only two tills open well apart. Plenty of stock on shelves, including toilet rolls🤩 Dropped Mum’s few requirements off at gate, a quick hello in person with her and my Sister, and then straight home. Car sanitised, me sanitised, shopping carefully put away. Other shoppers were saying both our big Tesco and Asda were more chaotic, so a good move. Veg box arrived as well today, excellent quality and plenty of variety. Checked how a couple of neighbours were doing, at a good distance of course.
I hope others around the country are coping as well. The glorious weather we have enjoyed has continued, although there was a very sneaky cold wind. Keep safe everyone😎

I've tried to stop looking at the "virus" charts, it's bad enough looking locally, Hampshire cases have grown rapidly, I presume because many commute to London?
I wiped over our home delivery food this afternoon, a couple of weeks ago I thought a friend who did this was being a bit OTT. I used a cloth dipped in a mild bleach solution.
A neighbour said he'd driven to Asda and stood in a queue for an hour, ok when the weather is sunny like today.

We’ve been self-isolating (pretty much) for the last two weeks or so. Haven’t seen the grandchildren in that time ☹️ Watching the local news a few nights ago, the ‘expert’ was talking about the groceries that come through the door. He said that one should assume they are contaminated (not that they are), but that it’s nigh on impossible for everyone to clean thoroughly every single item, reinforcing the message, keep washing those hands! Watching the news earlier on, there was an item about possible outcomes/deaths worldwide. I forget the exact numbers, but left unchecked, the virus could kill 40 million. If all countries take steps to curb it, that number falls to something over 1 million. Frightening statistics.

It seems to be changing at an ever faster rate, BB. Earlier this afternoon, I read an article about the plight of the Cruise Industry and the around 10,000 passengers aboard various ships that had been refused permission to dock, including the Zandaam Holland America vessel. 4 passengers on board that one ship have dies in the last couple of hours.
A further 3 people have died in Ireland {reported on Guardian Blog at 1928], and France has extended its lockdown until 15 April.
And, just for a change, Donald Trump has 'gone off on one' via Twitter, lambasting GM and Ford for not producing Ventilators quick enough. At least that's back to normality ...

I really do fear for America, watched C4 news tonight, report from NY and it’s shocking what is happening there. By contrast, they showed how the tiny community at Ballacullish are working together, helping one another in all sorts of innovative ways.

it's fair to say that the Prime Minister is known to have had various romantic dalliances over time. As part of his support team, he has the services of a professional Spokeperson whose tasks include giving the official, considered, formal response to questions, criticisms, enquiries etc.
You would hope that the Spokesperson would have thought about the choice of words used to deal with these events and episodes. As various Health Professionals, Professors of Behavioural Change etc contributed to the criticism of the PMs perceived nonchalance in dealing with the Coronavirus crisis, the Spokesperson defended Mr Johnson for joining in the applause for NHS Staff by uttering the immortal words:
'He did really want to take part in clapping NHS staff ...'
'Open mouth and change feet moment'? Or audition for a remake of 'The Thick of It'?
Moments like this make me think that we can get through this ...

Still they try to get to holiday areas! Well done D&C Police for sending this MH back whence he came.

Unbelievable stupidity! We saw this on the local news Tinwheeler. Also the police are checking on cars parked near beaches here and sending the occupants home. If people are still considering coming here for Easter they will get a shock, police are stopping some cars as they get here and sending them home. What part of necessary travel don't they understand. Just selfish, stupid behaviour.

I saw the same item, Debsc. There were cars parked up on the seafront. Was it Exmouth? I’m not sure. Cars are even being stopped on the approaches to Plymouth to check whether journeys are essential.

Good for them.
I've not been to our local beach for obvious reasons so I’m not sure what's happening here.

Which Remainer could do the work then? Just asking.

We haven't managed the beach either Tinwheeler, 4 mile round trip walk to the nearest one but it has been closed to the public at present. Daughter lives at Woolacombe and other family and friends near other beaches have told us. No parking allowed near the Tarka Trail but we can just about walk to that.

I think people must have been turned away if they drove to our local beach as our neighbour is no longer driving her dogs there although she did it daily until Thursday.

Our local police are stopping folks driving anywhere to take a walk. It’s local walk only. We are lucky having a big park on our doorstep, there are a few folks out walking, but all you see are specks in the distance.
Spoke to a nursing friend today re Sheffield cases. Much as I thought, because of the big hospitals, lots of cases arriving there, it’s a regional centre, so bit of a false case figure locally. Which is sort of a bit comforting somehow. We are a good bit away from Sheffield though.

Police in North Wales are turning people around and sending them home if they are not from the area.
Special "Intercept" teams have been deployed on access routes into North Wales. All Motorhomes and any towed caravans will be pulled over. The news says that a family of 5 from Merseyside were found near Conway, out for their holiday, and given their marching order.
So that rules me out for a turning the caravan wheels over on a spin down the main A55 then. Best stay put.

Those Anglo European companies that actually have manufacturing capability and have formed a development and manufacturing operation across many sectors who have come together to actually do something to support the manufacture of vital equipment. All done quietly, efficiently, and with total disregard for promotion of their corporate image.
Unlike those who moved their manufacturing to the far east and do not support British manufacturing any more. They do however appear to have a very efficient and effective publicity department.
Well done to all those in the Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics companies currently actually helping.
