Anyhow, we've just done three deliveries before we were told that there are no more orders. So we're back at the caravan and I can sit in the relaxer, in the awning and enjoy what's left of the milder weather. The days are getting longer too, so lighter longer in the afternoons and I'm trying to make the most of it. I like the relaxing pace of this job when on weekdays I get two or three lunchtime deliveries to do and the rest of the afternoon off until the evening orders start. So we could be busy for a few hours before we finish for the day at 7 p.m. although, having said that I will have to work late tonight as the boss cannot cover for Monday evenings.

Have a nice time there. You might even be tempted to buy a new caravan!

Jean and Colin hello and welcome despite a long discussion in here about touring Scotland it is really a general chat thread. 😃. The joys of CT 😉.

I'm sure you can attract plenty of suggestions if you start hour own thread with the question. The answers won't get lost in this long one.

Sorry I can't help but another David has I believe and I think he blogs about it. Might be worth trying to find his profile as well.

From the website, it looks as though its open for two hours in the afternoon on certain days in the week but not everyday.

I won't do all that in one day. My plan is to stop overnight on the way. An overnight motorway service stop costs about £12 and has the advantage that you can keep the car and caravan hitched up overnight making it easier and less work when you arrive and leave the next day. Also the convenience and saving in time of staying near the motorway with nearby facilities.

But the best episode hasn't aired yet! And I'm worried it may focus so much on the Alpacas (the perceived stars of the show), that it will be "blink and you'll miss us" and I will have cleaned the kitchen for nothing!

    A week to go!

That sounds about right Malcolm. We stayed at Dunnet Bay for 5 nights. We weren't sure whether we would visit the Heritage Centre but (I think) on our last day on site there was heavy rain in the morning and we stayed in the caravan a while and realised that, as the rain stopped and the sun came out, it was due to open and so we visited. Obviously you are not on the site very long but, if ties in with other plans it is worth a visit.

Lovely day out today. OH fitted the new Gaslow system to the M/H at the weekend so today we took it into Perth to fill it with gas. The sun was out and warm, the hills looked very inviting snow glinting on the tops, so we decided to play hooky for the day and go for a drive.

We drove up to through Blairgowrie and on towards Braemar, stopping just short of it at the Glenshee ski centre. Had a spot of lunch in the ski cafe there and then afterwards went back to the van and watched the kids learning to ski, not a lot of snow about but enough for their first ski lesson. There was a few families out with young children sledging, all seemed to be having a good time.

The weather on the hill tops had a fine drizzle but at the centre it was lovely and sunny so we had a rainbow right over one of the hills.

Lovely drive back with the sun coming into the cab (driving south)

Malcolm, the drive was 40.5 mls and took 1hr 10mins approx each way, this is winter, the roads were not busy and its a journey we have made more times than I can remember. We are a 6.5m motorhome, just to give you some idea of the kind of roads and speeds you will encounter. Also don't forget fuel up here is much more expensive.

Back home now feeling happy at having a day off wink

Well, as you ask......what other job would not pay you anything for the time that you have to be 'on call' but your employer isn't able to provide you any work?

What other job would have your wife working full time and not pay her anything?

What other job pays far below minimum wage and gets away with it?

What other job illegally doesn't pay your income tax and NI contributions and gets away with it?

Nope, there certainly aren't many like that, Malcolm!

Does your job actually cover the cost of buying, running, insuring etc. the Smart car that you had to buy to be able to do the job?

Since you ask Ian 'Well, as you ask......what other job would not pay you anything for the time that you have to be 'on call' but your employer isn't able to provide you any work? '

There are plenty of job that fit most of the criterion.

That's a pity, were you never able to join an employer's scheme?  Their contributions make a huge difference.

We have encouraged our children to put as much as possible into their schemes as their employers will match it up to 10%, so they are  both now getting 20% of their salaries paid into their company schemes.

Well done Mr Tammygirl.  Was it difficult?  How much did it cost to fill it? Have you tried it out now?

Sounds like a super day out, does you good to play hooky sometimes wink

Malcolm, I'm pretty sure that IanH told you before that if all you had was state pension, then you would qualify for other pension benefits. I know you said you would rather pay your way, which is admiral however you won't be able to do that for ever.

There will come a time when you will need to move into a conventional house, do you see yourself settling down in the area you now work and live? you've said many times that its too expensive. In time you will not have any choice but to get your pension topped up to a level that you can afford to stop working, here's hoping its not going to be to late to do so.

Good advice we visit Killin often and always use that route. Our motorhome is 7.5 meters long and I wouldn't take it  up the road at the side of Loch Lomond much easier to take the motorway and less stressful

Sounds like a really wonderful day out tammy.  When we had our motorhome we often liked to take it out for a day in the winter.  We would take  picnic and find somewhere nice to park up and enjoy the view. It also helped to keep it 'aired'.  Nothing quite like it.smile

TammyG your drive out sounded lovely. We used to like going to the Cairngorms ski lodge for a hot drink, pretty chilly outside but nice watching from the inside.

Goldie thanks for the link, have bookmarked it this time!

Well actually, the courts generally decide on this, although I'm sure that there are plenty of people who accept this form of slave labour, contrary to what the law says.

The sort of things that the courts will take into account when considering whether an employee should be paid while on call are:

How many calls is the employee expected to receive - are they often and at all times during the 'on call' period?

Is the employee then required to report to an office or base (e.g. to collect the food).

How soon does the employee have to respond to the call? Can it be when it suits them?

Can the employee only go a limited distance from the work base during 'on call' periods?

What is the employee allowed to do whilst 'on call' (e.g. restrictions on drinking alcohol, not having other commitments, take part in hobbies etc. that have a time commitment).

I'd say that Malcolm should be paid whilst on call.

Very mild and breezy today, hung all the washing outside before work, so much better than drying inside.  Boss on holiday this week, office to myself with just the dog for company smile

All this advice for tour of Scotland, has made me think I'd like to get back up there, as so much of the country I've yet to see.

Bakers, fitting it was easy Mr TG says, 21ltrs cost £12.18, haven't tried it out yet will try it tomorrow.

Millieh, brue, DSB, we hope to do more days out like this, it really was nice and there is so much within an hour or so's drive that we can do, maybe next time we will take the bikes and get a bit of exercise as well wink

H&T my folks moved up to Scotland in 1966 and the OH was born here but there is still so much that we haven't seen and done. The Western Isles and Orkney are still on the list to do, we've been retired 6 years now where has all that time gone.

Agree...where does the time go?   I can hardly believe that it will soon be 10 years since I retired!

We have been to Orkney, but none of the other Scottish islands with the van, and taking a caravan to the Western Isles  is very expensive.  There are also not many sites, I think an island tour would be more suited to a MH.

However, our DIL and her Mum own a holiday house on Islay, so we may get the use of that sometime.  And our daughter's husband's uncle and aunt have a holiday cottage on Lewis which we have been invited to use for a short holiday this summer, so we will at least get to see a couple of the islands.

Tammygirl for some reason I had in mind he was fitting an actual gas tank to your motorhome doh. Thought it jolly ambitious 😂😂😂.  Makes much more sense. We still have a full calor gas to use but wondering about refillable in due course.

I can imagine that the roads in Scotland, especially in the Highlands must be very different from England Tammygirl, but I rather like the idea of the absence of roundabouts and traffic lights that tend to hold up traffic south of the border! The slower and more relaxed pace should enable us to see more of the countryside.
