    And it should not be an endurance test, towing a TA round Scottish roads, paying much much more for fuel than your used to, more for food, (no late night tesco to buy cheap food) we live here and we would think more than twice doing a punishing trip like that.

    Sandringham to Garlieston is at least twice as far as I would wish to tow in a day Malcolm

    I would not be spending to much time looking at the scenery on the west coast route Malc. As with the rest of the country the pot holes along the sides of the road have not been filled in. Unfortunately in the west highlands A roads are not as wide as down here. As a result everyone drives with their wheel on or close to the white line. If you don't pay attention, you will certainly get your van wacked with a wing mirror.

    Went out in the van last Sunday to Thursday.  Had a lovely few days in Wareham and the Dorset area.  Since I've been back we've had a really busy few days.  Since Thursday evening I've taken three long choir practices (with different groups), conducted a concert in Wellingtion (Telford) last night, played for a church service this morning and visited M.I.L. this afternoon.

    Back home now.  Hopefully a quite evening tonight.  Just ordeed a Pizza and about to take the cork out of a bottle of red.

    Honestly Malcolm, that is madness!  You will not make it from Sandringham to Garlieston sensibly in one day, there is a lot of distance there not on motorways.  

    It is at least 8 hours of driving, plus stops.  You will be totally worn out.

    And  no way can you make the return journey from Balbirnie in one day either.

    Up north, not only are many of the roads narrow, quite a few are single track which slows progress even more.

    I would suggest you either extend the trip to 3 weeks, or go no further north than Inverness.

    We have been up there a few times so I speak from experience.  Steve is correct when he says you will be too busy watching the road to admire the scenery.

    Each of those areas would justify a stay of at  least a week!

    Malcolm, you will regret doing to trip , down here in the south we are used to motorways and wide A roads ,and nowhere is that far away,and I don't think we appreciate the distances and type of roads further up the country , listen to those who live there ,that your trip is a trip to far 

    you now have the chance to modify your trip before it's to late

    We did right up to Durness on the north west corner then across to the east and back home to Nottinghamshire, all in 1 week in a VW camper. However we were only 24 at the time.😃

    Towing a TA it is just much to much, and over 500 miles in a day is just OTT.

    Yes but don't forget, I'll be spending two nights on each site so there'll be just one day travelling followed by one days rest.

    500 hours sounds like a 12 hour day Malcolm. What time of day will you have to leave on your return to Worthing?

    It was pleasant enough until around 2.30pm on the Wirral yesterday. Around 11C at mid day.

    Forecast for me near Chester is overcast and 15C. 12C at present and partial cloud

    I doubt that it will be 500 miles between each of the sites mentioned. More like 250 miles a day maximum. I'm sure the trip from Garlieston to Craigie Ayr is probably not more than 100 to150 miles, for example.

    It may well be 500 miles from Central England to the north coast of Scotland and it may well be 500 miles in total over the two weeks that we'll be travelling from site to site within Scotland but I can't see that we'll be doing 500 miles each day, which is what SteveL said!

    Perhaps KjellNN could make some comment as he lives in Scotland and must know the landscape and distances between the sites quite well, I would think.

    We can leave at about 10 a.m. We plan to stop overnight at the motorway services on the way back to Worthing.

    Well, having waved goodbye to our family from N.Ireland yesterday we now have 2 more grandchildren today as it is half term here this week.  Grandson is going to a sports club and grand-daughter and I are going to try out one of the new dessert bars in town.smile

    Indeed Malcolm I suspect that you will cover around 650 miles each way (maybe a little more each way) on your runs from site to site and back. Too far for me in a short time Malcolm but each to their own and hopefully you are more mobile than me fella.  

    With my spine I would spend the time when not driving mainly on my back with a heavy dose of ibuprofen and a glass of Scotch. wink

    Yesterday we went for a walk with 36 friends on the Wirral Way near Thurstaston. Only about 3.6miles. One of our friends has mobility difficulties and did well to complete in around 3 hours with a number of rests. I doubt that the chap can shuffle at more than 1.5mph. The sad thing is that 6 years ago he would have been able to walk 5 miles along a canal towpath, have lunch and walk the 5 miles back. He certainly is not a quitter though.

    EasyT, I just looked it up on the Google Map. Garlieston to Ayr Craigie Gardens is just 60 miles. We'll be spending our first two nights in Scotland at Garlieston, then travel 60 miles to get to Ayr for another two nights. So in four nights we will have only travelled 60 miles. That's a huge lot less than 500 miles a day!

    Don't forget, we won't be doing from Worthing to Garlieston all in one day. We will be going from Worthing to the National where we will get five days rest before heading north. We will then stop overnight at the Motorway services on the way to Scotland. Then we'll cross the border probably at Gretna Green and head west towards Garlieston to begin our Scottish tour.

    Change of plan. Visibility here less than 50 yards. Must be a white out on the mountains I was going to. Using common sense and staying away, would hate to think of putting others at risk if I  got lost.

    Yes but distances between each of the sites would not be much more than the Garlieston to Ayr stretch and the journey up the west coast with its spectacular scenery and probably a lot less traffic than we have here in Worthing, would hardly be a chore!

    Macolm,  FYI we had a relaxing holiday by staying for 17 nights in Dumfries and Galloway alone not the 2 nights you are planning.

    Have you costed out the site fees and fuel for your trip?

    If you are determined to travel North then you would be better off viewing  everything South of Edinburgh.
