@nelliethehooker Your guess is as good as mine re the value of the car. They tend not to appreciate in value the older they get. Whether it woould make much difference to leave to the Spring, its difficult to say. No decision has been made but I wonder if we are just delaying the inevitable? I will wait to see what Simon's investigation throws up re price. It will be a big decision as I have had a car for the best part of 60 years!

Just returned from a 5 day break at Sandringham CCC site, where our main visit was to the Thursford Christmas show. There are many You Tube clips showing this excellent production.
The stage and seating area is the same area as the Thursford Steam engine museum,so many of the engines can still be seen around the area.
The other interesting place to wander for an hour of so ,is Wolverton station, this is literally 5 minutes by car or longer if you walk. This was the Royal Railway station, and if you time it right ,the platforms are open to wander around, with a small museum, many of the buildings are now privately owned, but all contain plaques explaining their past life role.
Dersingham bog is nearby for a lovely walk.I have no idea where the bog comes into it though.
We did walk through the woods to the Sandringham cafe, for a Cream tea,but Church and house are now closed for the season.
This is a lovely area.

@heddlo Great photo of Mam Tor. Been to the Castleton site many times over the years and "done" Mam Tor numerous times, a great walk. Glad to see you're doing so well with your 2nd hip replacement.
@DavidKlyne Margaret seems to be doing very well too; from personal experience I know it takes a bit of confidence to go out on your own again for the first time, so well done to Margaret. It's a big decision for you what to do about the car, it's very difficult to know what to do for the best. It'd be a good idea for Margaret to go out with an instructor, but if she isn't keen then you can't force her of course.
@DSB Pleased to read that Carol is doing well with her hip too and glad that your visit to the optician had a positive outcome too.
@nelliethehooker That was a lengthy dentist's visit! We're still on the NHS as far as our dentist is concerned, but don't know how long that will continue.
Never done a coach tour, but those sound interesting @Takethedogalong Had a look at railway trips to the continent, they too look interesting. Have done 2 river cruises and really enjoyed those; sea cruises don't appeal to either of us.

We were down in Norfolk in the summer staying at Seacroft club site in Cromer and had a great time we visited Sandringham for the day done the tour of the house and gardens and visited the church was a great day out. Also visited the Thurston museum which was great too lots of interesting exhibits

The bog at Dersingham is literally that, a bog, but there are walks that can be done around the edges. There's a car park on the right as you drive to Wolferton station and you can walk from behind the car park into an area that sits below you, accessible by steps. This is a good place to stop and look for Nightjars which will be flying near dusk. They're summer visitors and their churring noise and wing clapping are very distinctive. Last time we visited the station we saw this fellow scampering off the platform.
All in all a lovely area to visit.

Been a busy day at Wherenext Manor. Had to pay a visit to the recycling centre this morning, then outdoor mortaring of some gaps in quite a few bricks. Plenty of work done in the garden, mostly clearing leaves but moving a few pot plants. We also saw MiL off as she was picked up to attend the last session of the craft club. She was persuaded to go to the last one of the season, by the ladies who give her a lift, so she could say farewell to her fellow crafters. She's quite firm in giving up, although they have insisted she pop in every few months or so. We'll see.
Quite a busy time in the kitchen as well, trying to get to grips with the new induction hob. The ladies seemed satisfied with the results so it unfortunately means I get to keep the job.

@InaD I was back at the dentist this lunchtime, having my quarterly appointment with the hygienist, and asked the receptionist how much my treatment would have cost had I not been with Denplan. For the emergency treatment and then root canal work it would have been over £750!!😮😮 That's the equivalent of nearly 80% of the yearly cost for both of us.
@Wherenext you know very well that you thoroughly enjoy being the head chef in your household!😁
It's good to hear that Carol is doing well following her operation @DSB and that there has been no major deterioration with your eyesight.
We woke to a light frost over night and the rest of the day has been sunny but rather cold again. OH had an early appointment with our hygienist after which we went for a pleasant walk beside our Channel before my visit there. After lunch I replaced one of our security lights so we now complement the array of lights and cameras put in place by our next door neighbour, following their break in.

Not the best of starts to the day as we were rudely awoken by the smoke detector going off at 2.45 a.m. An ominous portent of things to come. A false alarm but it took a while to get back to the land of nod. Then had to put up with the Day Trip made by the local Zombie Club and the general unwashed to the town market. I only went in to pick up OHs meds from Boots. The smell alone would have driven me home quickly. Made me feel like taking another shower.
It promised to rain heavily by late morning but didn't appear until late afternoon. It has been raining but it's been Beech mast, like little flakes of brown snow. It's everywhere.
Had my second long conversation with the fraud squad at MiLs bank this afternoon. We were accepted as P.O.A.s a fortnight ago but someone forgot to tell the account despite us receiving official confirmation by both email and post. Another hour of my life wasted.
Not the best of days. I believe there's another fresh one tomorrow.

We haven't done much of any note this week as we are still feeling 'under the weather' since our cold viruses. We can't seem to shake it off so I bought some tonic yesterday and hope that helps. The Cathedral Guides meeting was via Zoom today as one of the speakers couldn't come in. The first speaker was a young woman who gave a talk about Katherine of Aragon's tomb as we don't really know what her original tomb was like. We assume it was desecrated during the Civil War and by reseaching various sources she confirmed that this is probably right. She also had various sources that confirmed that Katherine (at Henry VIII' insistence) was buried as Katherine, Dowager Princess of Wales NOT Queen of England.😡The second speaker was a partially sighted young man from the RNIB who guided as through how we can help guests and visitors with reduced sight. It was very helpful. We are booked to have afternoon tea at The Bull Hotel in Peterborough tomorrow as a pre-Christmas treat with some friends so I hope we can summon up enough energy to be sociable!
When I tried to log on here this evening I got the message 'it looks like you are new here' and then it didn't recognise my password so I have had to change it - what's going on?!

@milliehull The cold virus doing the rounds is certainly very persistent. OH started with it in late October; initially I thought I'd got away with it, but then also got it exactly a week later. However, mine lasted about 10 days, but it took OH a good 3 weeks before he got rid of it. He ended up with an annoying cough too. Hope you both manage to get rid soon.
1 -
Oddly enough, @InaD and @milliehull, I've had a cough/cold for the last week... and I tend not to get colds - can't remember the last time I had one... However, this one has really hit me! I'm hoping I'm towards the end of it now. It's made me really tired, and the cough is really annoying. I could do without it, particularly in the lead up to concerts, but I've just battled on, kept my distance from people as much as possible, and hope that I've not pasted it on!!! 😧😧
Thanks for your thoughts and comments following my hospital eye appointment @InaD and @nelliethehooker and your good wishes for Carol's continued recovery. When I got to the hospital, I did say that I wondered if I should have cancelled because of the cold. The nurse smiled and said, 'You're not getting away with it that easily...!' 😃😃

Best wishes to all those feeling under the weather / recovering from surgery / visiting hospitals etc. It seems, at the moment, that everyone on here is affected one way or another. Probably a reflection of our ages!
Unusually, we haven't been away at all this month and just looking forward to Christmas at Sandringham. However, before that, we have also had hospital appts coming at us thick and fast. Ros - for another colonoscopy (her third this year!) and I've finally - after a six month wait I've got an appt. to see the Rheumatology Consultant - the day after we get back from Sandringham! Then, a week later, a visit to the vascular surgery dept. for a routine ultrasound scan after my by-pass, 5 years ago. This means visits to both Hull Royal and Castle Hill hospitals - both massive sites and parking is an absolute pain. Spent an hour on-line, this morning registering my Blue Badge with ACPOA but I doubt from past experience, that there will be any spaces!
Mustn't moan, though - at least the weather's a lot better - almost tropical here after the last week of freezing temperatures😁

We had a lovely meet up with friends yesterday, a nice meal and a natter in a good pub. We were there nearly 5 hours, such a lot to catch up on. Staff were lovely though, didn’t try to hassle us out, and we bought more drinks.
Now starting to make plans for our first holiday in over two years, what to take with us, things we want to do and see. Going to head off early and stay overnight on way up, then we can get the worse of the driving done while A1 is quieter, and then pick our route for getting up to Hadrian’s wall. Might do breakfast in Barnard Castle, then if there’s no thick snow, go across the Teesdale/Weardale moorlands, catch the Roman Museum at Corbridge, then get settled into cottage early evening.
Something that came out of our nattering yesterday, the Blue Light Card Scheme. Plenty on here could possibly get access to the discounts on a huge variety of offers, services, etc….. and it’s available to retired folks as well. Apologies if it’s something folks have already accessed, but if it benefits anyone else, I post a link…..
Make sure you check out whose eligible, as I was surprised at some of the nominated services/ occupations.😁

@milliehull I got an email about the Peterborough Cathedral events yesterday. Some great Tudor goings on, I would like to do the Alison Weir event, but daren’t book anything that far ahead. Will have to see. The Banquet looks a bit too “meaty” for us non meat eaters🤣 Hope you soon feel better.
1 -
@Takethedogalong we too are getting ready to head off for our next trip, in fact I changed the plan slightly today. I did have a look at the Blue Light Card scheme but unfortunately we do not qualify, although I suspect that quite a few on here would do so. Hope all goes well with your trip to Northumberland.
Hope all goes well with your appointments @richardandros and that you get some satisfaction from your visit to your Rheumatology Consultant.
I hope that those with colds and coughs have soon managed to shake them off. So far we have managed to avoid catching anything untoward. We have had mixed weather over the last couple of days and although there has been plenty rain at times I haven't really got wet when out with Flyte.

Lovely dry day albeit a bit chilly.
Picked up the van from the dealer this morning after having the motor mover sorted, a new box and controller, very expensive
Had my hospital check up Wednesday and it looks like 2 more lumps to be removed sometime after Christmas

We had a very enjoyable Festive afternoon tea with our friends yesterday. Well recommended, the food and service were wonderful. It was great to spend time and catch up with our friends. We also did a bit of shopping whilst in town. This morning I was booked to do a Highlights tour of the Cathedral. It was a bit 'challenging' as we suddendly realised that they were setting up for a big concert this evening but we didnt want to cancel as there were people booked on it. I was glad I went ahead as one of the visitors was over here from Australia working in London for a few weeks and had made a special journey up here to see Katharine of Aragon. Despite the disruption and noise no visitors were harmed! I am now shattered. I think an early night calls.
@Takethedogalong I belong to the Blue Card scheme as I used to work for the NHS but not everyone is eligible. My OH isnt - he was an engineer. If you are eligible it is well worth joining as there are some very good offers. Keep your eye on the Tudor events here. Hope you manage to get to some of them.
Sorry to hear you have some more lumps that need removing @Oneputt I hope you have some good and swift care. It is good to read how well your grandtwins are doing with their sports.
I hope the start of your next trip goes well @nelliethehooker
It was a lovely bright start to the day here but it is now raining.

Just a heads up for the newer hip replacement patients, do take care! I am just about 12 weeks post-op and, apparently, I can just about do anything as normal! On Wednesday after having lunch out, an eye test at the optician, and shopping in Marks and Spencer, we came home and I dropped something on the floor, picked it up (which I’m sure I’ve done quite a few times already) and thought umm, that doesn’t feel great with some pain in my new hip, I couldn’t put any weight on it or walk. Mild panic!
We went to A&E as obviously I wanted to get it checked out. We arrived at hospital around 6.30pm, not too busy so I expected we wouldn’t be too long - wrong!!! I didn’t see a Doctor until around midnight who advised an X-ray (well, Triage told me that at 6:30) that took place around 1. 30am. Another wait for the Doctor to assess said X-ray, and we eventually left hospital at 3 am. Fortunately it doesn’t look like I have any damage to my new hip, it could be a muscle, ligament, nerve problem so I have to take it easy and wait for things to improve. I am, annoyingly, back on sticks for a while. A&E is a pretty poor experience I must say. I felt so sorry for others too, especially one old lady who thought she was in to see a Doctor and not expecting a very long wait - we were more than seven hours. It seemed to be lots of absolutely nothing happening, just the occasional person being called in to see the one doctor on duty in that section. Of course it ended up being really busy later in the evening which made things worse, I dread to think what bugs we’ve picked up! I’m glad to say I can weight bear now and it is improving, I’m just back to limping around which is very frustrating, but there are worse things, so onwards and upwards.@Takethedogalong and @nelliethehooker enjoy your trips away. Hope the weather stays fair for you. @richardandros hope you can get some useful help and advice from your next hospital appointment.

@heddlo sorry to hear about the problem with the hip. It's not that long since you had it done so I expect everything is still healing internaly? When I had mine done, 16/17 years ago the big concern was the risk of dislocation, that seems hardly to be mentioned these days? I was actually reading something the other day that suggested that dislocations were now pretty rare, which is a good thing. Margaret is now about about 7 weeks post op. Next week she is determined to venture into CMK to do some shopping which will involve a bus ride and quite a lot of walking!!! I keep suggesting she should at least take a taxi in but without success thus far!

Thanks @milliehull fingers crossed that all goes well with the trip. It is good to read that you had an enjoyable afternoon with your friends, and that the Highlights your went well.
Sorry to hear that you expect to be going back into hospital for the removal of more links @Oneputt hope this will sort out the problem this time. I'm sure you are pleased to get the caravan back, do you have any more trips planned for the year?
That sounds like quite a night out @heddlo I guess you were very glad when you eventually got home knowing that there appeared to be no major damage, and that the pain is easing.
It certainly looks as if Margaret is quite quickly getting over her operation @DavidKlyne

It has been a rather mixed day with the weather today, starting off fine and dry but we then had a couple of heavy showers accompanied by strong winds. It did eventually clear up so not every walk required me dressing up in full wet weather gear.

It’s mainly been wet and miserable here this week. Everywhere feeling damp. We don’t have any central heating so I’m very grateful for the Aga in a morning - the kitchen is warm when I come downstairs.
Earlier in the week I had a steroid injection in my left knee. The result was magic! By the next day the pain had almost gone. I just wish I could do the same with the other failing bits of my body.
And - avoid doctors’ surgeries- as well as pain relief I picked up a bit of a bug!
1 -
It's a lights on all day sort of day here so I am going to stay at home and make the Christmas cake.
@Goldie146 Glad to hear your steroid injection has been a success. I really must make an appointment about my very painful shoulder and see if they can offer a steroid injection for me. Sorry to hear you have picked up a bug - I am sure we picked up our colds and coughs at the GP surgery when we went for OH's COPD review. Hope you feel better soon.
@heddlo I am so sorry to hear about your set back with your hip. Hope it gets better soon. Yes @DavidKlyne when OH had his replacement hip 20 years ago the main worry was dislocation. Glad to hear that Margaret is doing well with her new hip and also Carol @DSB

Bliss reigns at Wherenext Manor this morning as the Ladies have walked around to the Village Hall for a Christmas Fayre (does it make it extra special if you have a y in fayre?). Supposed to be raining this morning but its clear at present with a chilly air. Long may it continue as we've had too much rain this week as well. I'll probably go out after this coffee and put some water in the van for a 1 night get away early next week.
Hope you enjoy your holiday @Takethedogalong and that the weather deteriorates for you as I know you like going off piste in the Jeep when it snows.😂 Not often you can wish someone bad weather on their hols but they are weird.😁

We have had a lot of rain this week, often very heavy, but today has started sunny. Our new patio door was delivered on Wednesday, but could not be hoisted up onto the balcony as the joiner’s assistant was off sick, so it is now tied to our front steps handrail, with all the wheelie bins in front of it. The plan is for it to be installed on Tuesday.
From here, the joiner then went down to DD’s house to erect some scaffold and start dismantling the leaky gutter at the front of her house. She had been worried that, as her next door neighbour had found, the water overflowing might have started rotting the ends of the roof beams, but everything was fine, so the new gutter , fascia and soffit was all put in place on Thursday, and looks very good.
She has splashed out and gone for an ogee shape in red powder-coated aluminium, to mimic the original cast iron stuff. Makes the rest of the frontage look rather shabby though! The upstairs flat has a dormer window immediately above and the woodwork there is in a dire state, also some of the decorative stuff above their lounge window is in a bad way.
Her workers are returning next week to deal with some more rainwater stuff round the side of the house, water is cascading from the end of the gutter there. Hopefully only due to a blocked downpipe.
I too have picked up a bug somewhere and started feeling quite poorly on Thursday evening, coughing a lot so not much sleep. It was worse yesterday, more like a bad cold , and today I am feeling rather “limp”, so will just be taking things easy. Just hope OH does not get whatever it is too, coughs and colds always affect her badly, and she is still suffering badly with her sore legs.

We had another great concert night out last night…..Sheffield City Hall, a beautiful, interesting 1932 building in its own right. This time it was Jools Holland and the Rhythm and Blues Band, plus guests. Glad to say the magnificent Ruby Turner was one of the guests, as was one of Sheffield’s own, Richard Hawley. Fantastic night of music, from utterly gifted musicians, the place was rocking. In fact we were up in “the God’s” for this one, and I swear the balcony was moving🫣
Like others, I too have now got an awful cold, just grateful that after testing, it isn’t COVID again. So it’s a day indoors, wrapped up slurping hot lemons🥴I suspect pharmacy or dentist for this one, too early to be concert. Mum and Sis fine, I am banned.
Packing, weather watching (ok, we are fans of “weird weather🤣), snuffling, sneezing, going to be a rather lazy day.Richard Hawley, with Jools and the Band.

Sorry to hear about your hip problem @heddlo - and what an horrendous experience at hospital - although, by all accounts, not unusual these days. Hope you're soon feeling better.
What an absolutely dreadful day it's been here today - as @Goldie146, says - a 'lights on' day - it doesn't seem to have got light at all and the rain has been lashing down since this morning. The pond is almost overflowing and I think I'll have to give the filter a good flush through tomorrow and run some water off.
At least the good news is that Yorkshire Water are now talking about stopping the hosepipe ban soon🙄.

What a horrible day! Hasn’t stopped raining. The river in the village river burst its banks a few days ago so I dread to think how high it is now. I do hope it doesn’t flood the village square as there is the big Christmas light switch on and Father Christmas arriving tomorrow afternoon, so fingers crossed for that, or I know of a few very disappointed children. OH has had a day of sorting finances, couldn’t do much else this weather!
I’ve been knitting a couple of penguins, finished one of them although they haven’t been as successful as the picture, the grandchildren won’t mind I’m sure. They were supposed to be sent to Macau for Christmas but too late now, so can be for New Year.
Hope all the colds clear up soon for all affected. We are still expecting something from our 8 hours in A&E on Wednesday, there were some poorly people there. We have our fingers crossed.
