What are you all up to

We had torrential rain here yesterday afternoon just as our hedge cutter arrived but he battled on and got it done, still more to do so he'll be back soon.
Hope things go well with your caravan decision Heddlo.
I expect you were pleased Flyte passed muster Nellie, enjoy your next tour!
We have booked a break next August, slight trepidation so far ahead and a bit costly at that time of the year but we knew the place was popular so jumped in.
Pleased to hear WN is venturing out, everything helps!

A difficult decision Heddlo, we sold our tourer some years ago due to OHs health problems but I was still enjoying it so understand a little of your circumstances. All made a little easier for us as we bought the static, but there will come a time with that as well. I would suggest that you make plans now for next years holidays, whether abroad, a holiday site, or even a couple of short breaks. In this way you both have something to look forward to that you might not have done if you still owned the caravan. Caravanning does become much harder as we age, better to leave our hobby on a high.

Good luck with whatever you decide, heddlo. It's about 3 years now since we finally sold ours (shortly before the pandemic/lockdowns when we wouldn't have been able to use it anyway.) We did keep it on for a number of years after investing in our static but found we were using it less and less each year - only about 20 nights in the last year we had it. And with insurance/storage/servicing costs coming in at roughly £1000 a year it just didn't make sense to continue. Doubtless the new owners will be enjoying using it now as it was still in excellent condition.
We did miss it to start with, but have found that for the same amount of money we can get 3 weeks cottage breaks a year in addition to being able to use the static for 11 months a year. So with a couple of hotel breaks and overseas holidays we are probably getting away more than ever.
There are loads of alternative leisure sources out there, so, again, good luck.

Its something I suppose we will all have to face at some stage? Because our caravanning and now motorhoming has been the main source of our holidays over the years it's a bit difficult getting your head around alternatives. I think Margaret is not quite so enthusiastic as she once was. COVID has clearly interrupted our pattern of being away. I think the difference between our hobby and ordinary holidays (however exotic they are) is that we are used to going away quite frequently whereas other types of holidays are fewer with more time in between. Good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future and you never know that you might discover an alternative that you can enjoy and look forward to.

Heddlo, We weaned ourselves off gradually. It doesn’t have to be a once for all decision.
First we gave up weekends and short outings. Then we gave up all touring in the UK - we had been everywhere we wanted to go. Then we expanded other possibilities where caravans can’t go - like those weeks we spent in the Scilly Isles. Then we discovered that flying to sub tropical beaches as elderly backpackers was the answer to cheapish winter holidays - far better than the long haul for a 90 day stay on a cramped caravan site in Spain. In the end we left the caravan in the shed at home for most of the year and just hoicked it out for a once a year summer tour in France.
But we didn’t have big money tied up in it. It wasn’t valuable and wasn’t costing much. Above all we didn’t have an emotional attachment to it . It was never our whole life as it seems to be for some who post on here.
But for one overseas tour every summer in the sun a cheap caravan was worth keeping.
Good wishes.

Go for it heddlo, we mix up our holidays as well, really enjoy cottages, chaffing at the bit to do some long haul adventures. It’s like giving up other phases of your life really, look back on things with happiness, and don’t let anything that becomes less than a great experience tie you down. We did 22 years of horse ownership, in mud, snow, blazing sunshine, etc…. OH would have have gone on and had another once he passed away, but I persuaded him no, let’s concentrate on something else. I don’t miss the mud and rain, we have kept all the lovely friendships we made, and have emerged out of it more or less bodily intact. We have the memories, the photos, a few rosettes and a few other bits and bobs, and so glad we did it.
On another subject, some of you might recall I posted about how my OH was subjected to a near miss “punishment pass” while out on his cycle, minding his own business, abiding by the rules of the road, and wearing all the right hi viz gear. Well, the update is, after sending the camera evidence into our local police, they have taken the matter further, and they are dealing with the driver of the vehicle in terms of his behaviour. We are happy that he hasn’t got away with such a dangerous piece of driving, and sincerely hope that he might think twice about doing the same again. 👍

Miserable wet day here. We've a bunch of agriculture students getting some practical experience. Fortunately there was enough to do inside (giving some cows a light clip, moving calves, mucking out pens and pressure washing the outside hutches).
Meanwhile we moved some sheep. Our farm crosses the border between two parishes - see the signs on the bridge.
Me? I stayed inside - cooking dinner, reconciling the bank account and completing a claim for part of our Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier agreement.

Our day turned a bit upside down, OH went off to the dentist for a routine dental check up and had to have an emergency extraction, a bit unexpected to say the least.
Sounds like a busy day Goldie, lovely to see those handsome sheep!

Not sure if you will get such a tolerable walk with or without Flyte tomorrow NellietH
You were not wrong, ABM, but at least the wind wasn't blowing so managed fine with a brollies first thing. It did ease off during the morning, so after OH had paid her visit to the hairdresser, and I had a quick dash up to collect her prescriptions, we had a nearly dry walk around our local park. The afternoon walk was again in the wet though, similar to the first one.
After the success of yesterday's bookings things didn't go to plan today, the first we tried was the forgone of 're nights we wanted, the second one has decided to close over the winter period, but we did manage to get into our fall back site. Now just waiting for word from our projected starting site. Hopefully we will have that booked tomorrow.
That was a bit of a shock for your OH, brue, hope he has got over it. Yes we were pleased with the vet's comments, it's always a bit of a concern when one goes to see them with a pet that is getting on a bit. All we want for the trip now is for this rain to stop and some decent weather.
Grand photo of the sheep, Goldie, is that another pedigree flock!

Wish you hadn't mentioned tooth extraction, brue!
I'm finally booked in to RUH tomorrow to have my two broken teeth removed under general anaesthetic! Only been waiting 18 months since the last, unsuccessful, attempt under sedation.
Have to check in at 7am - not looking forward to the experience.

All the best, M, I have been wondering if you were ever able to get the teeth removed, after the last unsuccessful attempt. Hope all goes well this time.

Yes all the best, will be thinking about you.

Electricity went off at 2am and not on again until 1pm, just in time for us not to get the compensation payment, but just glad to get it back really.
Visiting granddog arrived, and back from her ball play game very muddy, towel dried but still dirty. We bought her a new big bed yesterday, thought she would like it but she insists on laying on the carpet! Going to have to get the crate out after all. We don’t shut her in it but she knows that she stays in it a while until a little cleaner. We can’t be too strict about where she goes, as without her Mum here she tends to have seizures if she gets at all stressed.

Some good dental news here. All fine, quick clean and polish for me. OH needs an old filling looking at, but we got away light. Jeep been in for its annual service and MOT, no issues around either, so got away light there as well. Best wishes M, I don’t envy you, but good to get those little pearlies sorted.
Bit of an adventure for me today. Needed to get up to Mum’s from dentist, so decided to hop onto a bus. All local SY journeys are capped at £2 a ride at the moment (hurrah for SY Mayor🥳). Bus was clean, comfy and as it was partly my old “ride to school route”, it was very interesting up on top deck😁 I haven’t been on a local bus for around 25 years, rather enjoyed it.
We are car hunting tomorrow……

We had a text from NHS this morning cancelling OHs Hospital appointment for Monday,
Have just received another text reminder of her appointment Monday, have left a message on bookings answerphone advising we will be there as original booking on Monday
Left and right hand?

I hope all went well moulesy and that you are not feeling too sore.
We had a day out yesterday as we went to Ely Cathedral Christmas Fayre on a coach trip with the U3A. It was an absolutely amazing Christmas Fayre, one of the best that I have ever been to but the weather was so dreadful it was rather spoiled. As well as a wonderful array of indoor stalls there was a large number of outdoor stalls as well but it was so wet and windy that we didn't manage to have a look round those. I felt so sorry for those outdoor stall holders as they were getting so little trade. It was also very muddy and slippery and quite dangerous underfoot. We ventured into town for lunch and one of the gusts of wind took my umbrella and broke it so it is now in the bin. I have also been out this afternoon as a friend and I took another of our friends for afternoon tea for her 80th birthday to a lovely little tea shop in a nearby village. We all had a wonderful time catching up with each other.
Hope you manage to sort out the bookings for your next tour successfully nellie. Good to hear that Flyte passed is check-up successfully.

All went well today, back at home now. Bit of a frustrating wait having arrived at 7pm but understandable that both surgeon and anaesthetist need to see each patient before they even start on their list for the day.
They patiently talked me through all the possible side effects, though fortunately there don't appear to gave been any. Relieved to get it over and done with though - just have to milk the "take things easy factor" for as long as I can get away with it now!

Good to hear.
And at least till mid December I would have thought?

Well done Moulesy, my OH has done well with his unexpected extraction although he's on antibiotics to prevent further problems. Hope you have a pain free weekend.
I went to Clarks Village today, totally forgot about Black Friday, the bargain hunters were out in force, it was very crowded and the biggest attraction in one popular shop was the air fryer section!

My grandson has a small flock of Herdwicks (to give him experience of something other than Dairy Shorthorns). The original few were bought from our friend James Rebanks (noted shepherd and best selling author - A shepherd’s Life and English Pastoral). He lends us a tup each year to “entertain” the ewes.

Glad to hear all went well Moulesy. Are you on the soup and 'soft foods' diet?! Take care and keep taking the pain killers.

Had the mobile caravan service guy here today van has a clean bill of health that’s it 5 years old now so only recommendation was to get the tyres changed which we will do at the beginning of next year. Van now back on its space we are thinking of heading away at the end of the week not sure where yet possibly the Lakes we are keeping an eye on the weather before making a decision.
Hope everyone has a nice weekend

Thanks, Goldie. We were on a CL in Somerset this last trip, and the grandson of the farmer had a few pedigree Black Welsh Mountain sheep for the same reason, and he was the regional Young Shepherd.
