What are you all up to

It’s been quite a wet and dull day here so I haven’t left the house. Looked out our old video camera and started watching some of our old home movies lots from holidays of years gone by to many different locations. Strange to see old cars and caravans that we had remember places we have been. Many happy memories.

Watched a video I had taken when we were staying down at Hillhead many years ago I think it was the year the site opened after the club had refurbished it. It was nice to watch and see all the changes that have taken place over the years everything looked so new and fresh.

I love doing that. Embarrassing when you notice you still have the same clothes though.

The day started off brilliantly here with sunshine, blue sky and quite warm. OH got the garden furniture out which was a mistake as it has gone downhill and has been a very dull and grey afternoon. It is quite warm though so we have done quite a lot of gardening. It is supposed to be a 'mini heatwave' here for the middle of the week according to our local news but I don't know whether there will be much sun. No rain forecast here.
brue, I loved your description of the sheep and lambs going through your village. Gosh that took me back to holidays in Devon when I was a child. We used to see a lot of sheep and cows going along the lane by the cottage where we stayed. Happy days.

The Deeside Holiday Park looks very nice, but not cheap. Aberdeen is very poor for sites, there was the council one at Hazelhead but it has been gone for many years, a pity as it was so convenient.
The Club site at Banchory is good, but pricey in September, have not yet checked the price compared to the Deeside Holiday park. There is also a very nice CL at Banchory, it is very popular so could be booked up, we shall see.
We have friends in Banchory, but also want to visit an elderly relative in the city, so the Deeside place would be good.

Goldie, can I ask , if you have a public right of way over your land who is responsible for keeping it clear for use? , we have a bit of a problem with one of the land owners who just ignores requests to keep one clear (we think he is trying to dissuade people crossing his field )even the local council officer seems , has lost interest, it is arable land

I've looked at the CL in Banchory it does look nice and a good price. Popular as you say but you can always try, midweek might be ok.
We stayed at Hazelhead years ago with the boys when the Tall ships visited Aberdeen.
Before that I stayed there with my Mum and Dad in a wee campervan with pop top roof, boy was it cold up there as there was a Harr coming in and everything was just wet.

Funny enough we had a look at that CL in Banchory just the other night while browsing the website. It does look really nice and a place we would like to visit we were up that way a couple of years ago but stayed at the club site in Stonehaven which was very nice but fancy being a bit more rural this time and that CL ticks a lot of boxes. Fingers crossed for getting up there this year.

JV, you might find this useful. It details rights and responsibilities. Think it is the most up to date version. You might have to allow for some leeway given the current unprecedented situation, but most of the information is there. Your local council might employ a Rights of away officer who can help or advise.

Landowners have responsibility to maintain public rights of way - (maintenance of stiles varies by council I think). This link is for Cumbria, but I assume it's similar elsewhere.
We're lucky, I think, as we only have one footpath, but it is in a published book of walks. It goes through our ancient oak wood, which is fenced off to keep out livestock and preserve the habitat and especially at this time of year, ground nesting birds. There is a clearly worn path and a notice re dogs on leads, but we have had to add a hand written note to it. We don't mind walkers, and most seem to appreciate what we do and why. But we do get some people without a map, who assume a farm track is a footpath. Or those with a map who don't realise that the closeness of the contour lines = steep.

A morning of shopping, which Mrs WN reports went quite well ( for people behaving etc.) She can't say the same about the stock situation though. Still, we have enough to stave off starvation.
Just about to go out and wash Mrs WN's car as the local Pigeons have been using it for target practice.

Thanks for that ,the officer concerned, we think, is "on the move" and has not followed up the report, she has in the past shown little knowledge of her rural areas ,on a "walk about" we made her take with some of us . ,and this is true !!she did not know what a pile of Horse poo was

The field concerned has been this year been sown with Rape, and is now getting difficult to use the right of way,
Calls/emails to the council have of course used corvid 19 as the response for no action ,even when we have asked for a letter to be sent to the land owner

Quite hot again here today Rosa wanted to go for her second walk but also quite happy to be back in the shade (only did 20mins this time)
We have been asked if we can Tortoise sit for 2weeks as our neigbours need to go to Cornwall again to see to his mum,it is understood that the care package they managed to set up at Easter is not working . ,his Brother and OH have been down there , and it seems the council are a bit chaotic in that respect ,so it seems , in her words "there will be some strong words"

Can definitely recommend the CL at Banchory, Greenpark, and is rightfully very popular. We also stayed at Fjord Inn and it was fine for us, and would use again.

I have to admit, some of the Rights of Way Officers are a tad naive about certain things. I was on local BHS bridleways group for a few years (tasked with making sure our local bridleways were kept open and rideable) we got our local officer on board and he learnt a lot, particularly as the chap who headed the group was a Planner, and really knew what he was talking about.
We were lucky round here, most of the local farmers were very accommodating, and reinstated routes after ploughing etc.... and were careful what stock was grazed. Always found Rape a real pain though. It gets very tall, even up on the back of a big horse, and it can be tough to walk through. In flower both horse and rider came back looking as though we had been in a custard powder fight!
Why not have a chat with local Ramblers group, or local BHS group, and see if they can put a bit of pressure on, in a friendly way of course. Walking has become so important at the moment. Rape is a real pain though.......Good luck.
Tortoise sitting sounds interesting, well to me anyway....

went for a stroll along the west cliffs of Portland (about 10 meters from my house!) on yet another gorgeous day, plenty of swifts around also watched a harrier hovering waiting for its meal to break into the open.
Out at sea, a Seaking Helicopter used to train German air-sea rescue teams was at play in the bay, hovering a few feet off the water. I didn't get a picture though, I think I need to get a decent camera!
walking towards Portland bill

view across Chesil to Weymouth

Sorry that Owain the Quiff, our local BBC North West Weather Meister failed to provide enough basic Brew Juice for your grass Goldie, he's annoying yours truly for the same dry old reason !! I have much better things to do than carry watering cans off to the dandelion and bird bath area.

When we were staying in the Cotswolds one year ,the same problem with Rape on a right of way that had been sown with no thought , it seems , in a field with a right of way ,With a non cooperative land owner was "solved" when several locals lifted a quad bike over the gate next to the style ,and drove it back and forth across the field in question it did enable two abreast on the right of way after the "work was finished"

We would have to go past the landowners house to do the same here , it has been discussed

It is not a bridleway ,and the Ramblers headquarters are local to us and are aware

We all loved Owen in Yorkshire! Good he got promoted though. Have you seen his drum riff on the BBC News music? Brilliant👏👏

OH was in Tesco and M&S yesterday and reported good stocks of everything other than flour, so much so that there were a lot of reduced, short dated items, so freezer well stocked up now. Both shops were very quiet, more staff than customers in Tesco.
DD, who has been working from home since mid March, has just heard from her employer that their office will remain closed until at least January 2021. Good news as she normally uses the bus to get to the office.
She is making good use of her newly purchased jig saw and has gone into production of toy tools for Callum made from left over plywood from another project, so far a good looking saw, and next on the list is a spanner.

Life style change there K, and good for little Callum as well. Although I think his Grandad might miss him😁

I think we will try, when permitted, for Greenpark CL, we would normally travel on a Sunday, so there may well be pitches available during the week.
Comparing prices, the Club site at Banchory would be £25.70 per night for us in September
The Deeside Holiday park would be £24, or for £26 we could go fully serviced. So if being close to the city is the preference, it would be a much better deal.We will however only be going into the city on one day, otherwise we will be going up Deeside, so Banchory is more central on this occasion, and £15 sounds a good price.
Should Greenpark be full we will just spend less time in Banchory.

First trip out for 8/9 weeks today. We drove 10 miles up onto the Wolds, car must have wondered what was happening having not been that far for a while! I managed about a mile walk in lovely sunny weather, saw nobody just a couple of hares in the fields. Home now with a cup of tea, and a couple of paracetamols as my bad hip will be telling me it exists very soon I’m sure!!! 😱
