A Nationwide Flexplus current account gives you full UK and EU breakdown cover (provided by Britannia), worldwide comprehensive travel insurance and 3% interest on balances up to £2,500 for £120 / year. The interest alone is worth £75........

But have you tried to get that medical insurance if you have any medical conditions? .

    David

Yes indeed David but not very severe conditions for which we pay an extra £100 / year or so - still making it very cheap compared to competitors I have looked at. I was surprised that the additional cost was not higher for the Flexplus (which is worldwide) rather than the Flex account which we'd previously had which is limited to Europe.

I had thought that the extra costs, particularly in the USA, would have hiked the price dramatically.

Are you saying that Red Pennant covers pre-existing conditions with no extra charge?

Between us Margaret and I have a long list of things that we take medication for. Margaret has had a heart bypass operation and has type 2 diabetes for which she takes insulin and I have had a hip replacement. In the past with RP we had to go through a medical
assessment but recently they ask a limited set of questions to assess whether you have had recent changes in medication, whether you have any ongoing treatment. It is usually only the latter which they might not cover. People have also mentioned on here that
certain types of blood thinning drugs might not be covered. From what I gather RP take a sensible view of medical conditions in that if they are under control, even with medication, they take that as a positive unlike most insurers who take it as an opportunity
to add to the price. We tend not to do beyond Europe so its difficult for me to judge but I hate to think how much it would cost for us to go to the USA!!! If we go on a cruise or a non motorhome holiday to Europe we tend to use Age UK insurance which seems
    fairly reasonable.

All the free alternatives have a major drawback they dont cover long trips

We have Nationwide free European cover, I gave them a ring April this year to see if we could extend it to 66 days cover, the answer was Yes, after a few questions they said it would be £58, and that we could make as many trips in the next 12 mths as we
wished up to 66 days each trip.

We have now changed to the Flexplus account and have worldwide cover, I am going to ring in a couple of days to see how much that would cost to extend, I will report back once I have the details.

The best cover for car/caravan breakdown is Red Pennant. I can only speak volumes about how good they are. We have been caravanning for 20 years and usually venture to Europe several times a year and would never leave home without it. we went to France and
Spain in August/September this year with our car and caravan. Just half an hour from the Channel tunnel in France one of the car tyres exploded on the motorway. It was a Saturday afternoon and we were rescued by one of the Club's breakdown agents who found
us replacement tyres at a tyre centre just off the motorway. It would have cost me 200 Euros just for the recovery. The Club covered this and provided excellent telephone support. just over 2 weeks later we were travelling just north of Madrid on our way to
Santander to get the ferry to Portsmouth. The plastic expansion tank to the car's radiator sprung a leak! Another call to Red Pennant and we were rescued by a charming Spaniard who used to be a waiter at the Ritz Hotel in London, now a breakdown driver, such
a charming and caring man making sure all was ok! The Caravan was towed to a very nice nearby site and our car to his garage. Unfortunately the part didn't arrive in time for our scheduled return, so we were given tickets to fly home from Madrid to London,
met by a taxi to get home. Four days later our outfit arrived back home having been carefully driven to Santander and home by a CC member driver! Now that is service and well worth the premium. I can only say we will NEVER caravan abroad without Red Pennant,
worth every penny spent over the years.

Surrey Simon is explaining the value of Red Pennant for those who have to be back in the UK by a fixed date, such as people returning to work. But many of us older people would cheerfully wait in Spain and accept a hire car for a few days until the "plastic
expansion tank" was replaced. I'm not knocking Red Pennant, but any breakdown service would cover that particular problem - and the earlier burst tyre as well.
