Why do we have a Club Chaplain?

I'll try and answer that Tinwheeler. Hope I don't breach the guidelines. An Anglican parish priest (strictly speaking, the vicar) has the care of all souls within his/her parish irrespective of specific religious or even non-religious beliefs. I would expect an Anglican priest who takes on such a voluntary position to exercise similar care towards the organisation to which he or she has volunteered.
In other words, I would expect her role to be non-denominational. This would be my personal understanding.

I think that this thread shows why religion should not be discussed on CT ,as it is such an emotive subject and we all have our own believes that are personal to us
A lot of other companys have chaplins ,so should we stop using them???
We have to do what each of us feel is the right choice for that situation.............

My last word on this thread
I did not start this thread to discuss religion. I was seeking clarification about the organisation and governance of a club that I have paid subs to for quite a few years.
I have no issue with the role of chaplain within the club if that is what is required by members. However many seemed to be unaware of the existence of said chaplain until yesterday...
I never suggested that there shouldn't be a chaplain and I agree that it is up to others to make their own choices. I have made mine which is personal and the right choice for me.

I would have to agree with David and say that the Chaplain's role is non-denominational

HD, I think you'll find the exact opposite has happened on this thread. 96 posts, no abuse, no Religion kicking & no Religious fervour. I'd say it was a thread that proves respect for belief & none belief is alive & well on CT.
intelligent people know it takes all sorts to make a world, & they respect all of them.0 -

Thanks, Rochelle.
Although not really the point of this thread, I think it would be good if the Rev Charlton were to tell us about her CC related activities to let the membership know what she does, and to let us know of her existence as most were unaware. I appreciate the
forum may not be the best place for that but perhaps in Stories or a magazine article.0 -
Can I add my thanks for the explanation, that was all I was interested in Not my thread and no intention was ever made to discuss religion,
just an answer to a question from a concerned / interested member.I agree, Dave. I'm interested in the role of the Chaplain and understanding that will let us see why CC believe it's a necessary one.

Thanks for the explanation Rochelle, On the CC rallies I attended there were always church services on a Sunday morning held on the rally field. It was not compulsory to attend so some did some didnt.
If having a Priest on a rally is of help to somebody then it can only be a good thing.

100+ Posts on a non issue like this, I think some have too much time on thier hands
For goodness sake, David! It is not a non-issue to some. Have some respect for the OP. As for time on their hands - your irony gene is in overdrive again. Talk about inappropriate!

I see the Chaplain provides advice to the Chairman and Exec. Still did the TV programme though

Hi all.
As a very infrequent user of Club Together, I wasn't aware of this interesting discussion until this evening. As hubby to the subject of debate though, I thought you might appreciate the following response from the old gal herself ...
Hi all.
Having recently been made aware of this discussion on Club Together, I've now read the full thread with some interest, but cannot reply directly as to log on I have to be the primary club member - that honour is Paul's alone.
I guess it's just a discussion that is simply asking why do we have a club Chaplain. I assume it was an historical position as I believe there has only been two prior to me; my predecessor, Revd Canon Steph Roberts, having fulfilled the role since 1988.
I'm have to say that as I work full time in parish, my help to members is unfortunately limited, but I may be contacted via head office. Chaplaincy for me includes pastoral care and a confidential ear to those with faith and those without. I have many
years of working in multi faith environments - from schools, prisons, hospitals and parish. Nothing surprises me now!Following Steph's retirement, I was approached by East Grinstead initially to conduct the church service at the National at Cornbury; subsequently I was invited to take on the role of Chaplain. As a result I have been asked to run services for special
events over the yeas rather than everyday rallies. Such activity happened to include last year's Southern Centres bi-annual rally where judging cakes and handicrafts was an unexpected delight (where I was caught on camera....). In addition I was asked to be
a member of Club Council, which as you will be aware is a voluntary role. Both my husband Paul and I, with our daughter, work with our local centre on the committee and we rally as often as our circumstances allow.
Revd Hazel
I'm sure they will be some further conversation, but please bear with, if a quick reply isn't forthcoming.

What an excellent post from both G7(facillitating duties) & rev'd Hazel. Thankyou both for taking the time. For me personally it is an eye opener as I never knew of this role in life generally let alone CC specific, yup, everyday is a School day.
You obviously do your duties well & selflessly. It is a pleasure to know of you both. Fascinating. Thanks again.0 -
Yes, thanks very much for coming on.

Thankyou both for taking the time to post. Rev Hazel, you've explained a lot and it's been an eye opener for me. I feel it's a shame CC have failed to publicised your role as, not only did we not know what you did, we didn't know of your existence. They
should raise your profile. Thanks again for enlightening us.0 -
Hi one and all.
Thanks for your replies and comments, all of which 'er indoors' has read and appreciates. As said, I have rarely dibbed into CT, however I'll perhaps drop by more. Nice to see DSB on here, I used to enjoy David's contributions on another forum I frequent.
Best wishes to you all and with any luck we might meet up at either the National or similar event maybe .. we'll be in the beer tent

It's been ages since I've taken an active part on UKCS, Paul. I find it virtually impossible to contribute to more than one forum, and as I was asked to be a Champion on CT, this is where I come these days. Good to hear from you. Do keep in touch.
Regards
David

I've found this an interesting thread, though somewhat from an outsider's point of view, being both a non-Christian and an active member of my own faith.
It's a pity that the CC hasn't publicised this particular post and its incumbent as people who may have been in need of the services of a chaplain at stressful times haven't been aware that we had one. Even an official email address provided via the Club
would be a good start.I'm far more aware of the role of military chaplains as a friend to all and of police chaplains who can deploy to incidents to be a listening friend. Sometimes that is all a person needs in a stressful situation and a Club Chaplain who could provide that
to members in a stressful situation (for instance where someone has taken seriously ill or injured on site) would be a boon.0
