Ireland for the 1st time

We would like to visit Ireland this summer (say 2/3 weeks in May). Looking at top tips, everywhere has something to offer so where do we start? Do we start with say a week in the Cork area then move up to say Athlone for another week then finally Antrim? Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John
