Winter Skiing holiday with a caravan

Hi, we're considering going on a winter skiing holiday in Europe next winter taking our van and as yet don't have a location in mind. Just want to know if anyone has done this before? I'm just concerned about the safety of towing in snowy conditions, what sort of additional items we would need etc. Can anyone recommend any decent sites? We'd be looking at going from Dover to Calais and for approximately a weeks duration. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Brave man. The French call it Caravaneige (caravan snow) and if you Google that you will find out a lot.

The Club has several winter sports sites listed which they can book for you. An alternative might be one of the Interlaken sites in Switzerland as it’s easy motorway all the way from Calais - then use cable cars and mountain railways to go higher. But it’s 500 miles to get there from Calais and you say you only have a week, so is it worth the trouble and expense?

My ski-keen grand daughter says the sort of package she has done, flying to Bulgaria, was trouble free and affordable.

You need more than a week to get to a ski resort with a caravan and get some days on the slopes. The first problemis the lack of overnight stops en route. One of our favourite stops at Beaune, going to the Alpes , is now closed until February. You would probably have to stop at an Aire de Service unless you drive non-stop.

We can reccommend the campsite at Bourg St Maurice which is in the valley below the Les Arcs resort and has access to the funicular up to the resort complex. https://europe.huttopia.com/en/site/bourg-st-maurice/hiver/

Although motorhomers can drive up to aires in the resorts, we have never seen a caravan attempt the drive! You'd need chains on your car and your caravan. Down in the valley floor at Bourg you would not need chains or snow socks. However, you and your caravan would have to cope with temperatures down at -20 by night rising to -10C by day. You could also expect snow falls of several feet accumulating on your rooflight. You wont be using your aquaroll that's for sure, and you have collect your waste water in an open sided bucket so that you can tip out the Ice. If you use electric heating, you will have to pay for the maximum supply rate.

Lots of continental caravanners do go skiing in the Alpes but their caravans are winterized with on-board water and waste systems and double-skinned insulation.

Why not drive down and stay in a log cabin instead ?

We have stayed at this campsite, albeit in the summer but it also caters for winter sports

It might still be one of the sites offered by the Club? Its a nice small town and access is reasonable and there are lifts up to the Ski slopes.
