EHU on Italian Aires/Sostas

Hi, we are taking electric bikes on our first trip to Italy in May. Can anyone help re the voltage of the EHU's in campsites there please? We don't want to take them and then find it's impossible to charge the batteries.

    The voltage will be 220 /230 volts as here, but the number of amps supplied to you will vary from campsite to campsite - it may only be 3 amps, or 6 amps , or even 10. Always less than UK Club sites provide.

    My experience in Italy is the 6 amp EHUs are the most common. Only you can judge whether that will suffice for your needs.

    The mains PSU on my MiRider GB3 says

    "INPUT 100-240V 50/60 Hz 2.5 A

    OUTPUT 42v - 2 A"

    I expect yours will be similar  but easy to check.

    No experience of EHUs on European sites yet but my Ebike is making two trips to France and onward with me this summer (ending up on Lake Como on the 2nd trip).

    Electrical appliances tend to have a power surge on switch on which can trip site switches but I would sincerely hope that a 6 Amp EHU would be more than adequate. Just turn everything else off when first switching on and maybe do not use other devices while charging. It would also make sense to top up asap rather than charging a heavily discharged battery when the input to the battery via the PSU is likely to be higher.  

    Maybe there is an electrical engineer out there that can confirm the power surge aspect of my answer?

    P.S. I can get a 12v charger for my GB3 but it is quite expensive. Maybe you could do the same and charge while motoring?

    To answer my own caveat regarding power surge on power up. I have checked the fuse in my 240 volt charger for my GB3. It is a 3 Amp fuse. It follows that that a 6 Amp EHU in Italy will pose zero problem in charging your Ebikes. You might just have a problem if you tried to charge two at the same time but not otherwise.

    A bike battery is tiny. Surge not a problem but as stated above, many sites have quite low amperage (I have experienced about 3 amps on a large site). Again, not a problem for a bike battery. 3 amps at 230 volts is about 15 amps at 42 volts!
