    Is it something I posted/said?

My attempts to have a browse are still thwarted most days with server errors on the latest activity page. I even had the essential maintenance page, with an incorrect date 🤔. But when I got to see the latest activity the following day posts had been made after I looked.

Beginning to think it's personal 😉

Good job I keep a couple of threads open in tabs.

Even when it appears, rather than a server error, it’s not terribly useful. It often only comprises the one page, with no page down available and often those items showing are mainly likes. I know I’ve mentioned it before but why oh why do likes have to form part of latest activity.

I use a forum where the name of the liker shows at the foot of the post. I think that could make folk pause and consider and probably stop some of the games that are/have been played with likes as the action becomes very public.

I can see the point of that TW. However, on latest activity they aren’t on display long (if at all during server errors) and only serve to make latest activity next to useless as so few actual posts are listed. Even when page down is available it often reproduces what you’ve already seen. At least if it only displayed posts I would have the five last listed.

The other forum does not show likes in latest activity, only in the posts themselves which achieves the end result you’d prefer, Steve.

That may also curtail the activities of the occasional bright sparks who think it’s clever to like page after page of posts for some peculiar reason.

Unfortunately as its seems to have been going on for several years now, on and off, I suspect that unless there are major changes in the forum software I fear it will continue. I don't think it has ever been officially confirmed what the cause is. We do know the forum software is now out of date and I suspect that could be having an impact on the number of errors. They can often be worked round but I suppose that is not really the point!

So much for this morning's maintenance!  Been impossible to get on here by normal means because of 'server errors'.  I only managed it by going into 'My Stories' and then 'Discussions'.

Edit - just tried to go back to 'Discussions' from here - and can't because of "Server Errors'. This is ridiculous!

not sure it is the software, ok it might be out of date but software is software if it works successfully for several weeks why should it suddenly fail, unless of course somebody is trying to do updates to the software,

my guess is that it is the server(s)  that are at fault, e.g. we seem to get more errors at busy periods like now when possibly lots of people are on holiday trying to book easter holidays or even summer holidays so the server(s) are especially busy and not handling transactions as fast as they might, so yes old type software will fail if the handshake it is expecting from the server is a long time in coming because the server is busy, we are talking milli seconds here, and old coding generally had no safety net built into it to say "hang on a mo" lets give it another go to see if we can get a handshake, before failing, today sofware is much more resiliant and will hang around for that all important handshake, yes what the user sees is a slow down in the application he may be using but at least it works.

My guess is the club are probably looking towards new hardware, but that in its self presents difficulties as old computer code may not be totally compatible with the new hardware and some adjustments may be necessary, and again this presents problems, e.g. some of the tech team who were responsible for designing /writing the original software may no longer be available and for sure there will be holes in the software that nobody knows about except the person who left them. Have worked with some great writers of computer code, but lots of these people never were very good at keeping accurate documentation.

Also the system seems to be down for maintenance an aweful lot, if this is for software changes?  back in the day, we would make the changes then run with them for a given period of time before implementing any more not make change after change and you always had a back out plan in place so you could quickly remove any new fixes that were causing a problem and revert to as was.

Not read the clubs annual report, so not sure if there was any mention of software/hardware updates, apart from the new booking system

Another member having server errors as of 17:02 26th March 2024

Seeing the thread started in August 2022, and has 39 pages of complaints speaks volumes.

However, taking an positive view, the chances of any hacker getting members details is nearly zero. This conclusion based on the view that members cannot get a secure  connection, chances are foreign powers will not either.

Getting the page to refresh seems to bring life back.

But surely they did get some personal details during the recent attack? 🤔

The server error seems to have moved to the discussion page. Meaning unless a thread is showing in latest activity, or you have saved a link, you are unable to access it. ☹️

What a shambles! You cannot even post now without errors coming up and it is taking a long time for any success to appear.

I can post OK, PD, and I find most times with this recent batch of server errors they clear if you refresh the page.

This seems to be a new generation of S/Es😀

Indeed, when I posted my post above I received a server error. It had posted though when I eventually managed to get back to it.

I just don't understand what is happening! Tried to get into the "What are you all up to" post, numerous times this morning.  First page opens then when trying to go to last post - nothing happens.  Go to bottom of first page and click on double arrow to get to last page - "server errors" etc.  Just looked at it now and the last post is now showing as one from Oneputt in 2016! That wasn't there earlier this morning.

    This site is seriously broken.

Just checked again and it seems to be just that post that's affected.  Is it anything to do with the size of it?

The A Register reported on the outrage here  and I found something interesting in the comments here particularly by Bendacious and the two following comments which suggests that some aspects of the club website are weak, there is a link to do an analysis if you wish that shows up these weaknesses. Not that I really understand these things and perhaps someone who does could explain, but could that causing the almost constant server errors?

For most of the last week I have been getting the message probably 1/3 rd of the time I attempt to access posts.

I don't care why it is happening, I'm just annoyed it does and do understand why it should continue to happen. It is obviously a known issue and should be resolved.

    Colin

edit - what really gets my goat, and I'm being very polite, is when I spend time responding to a post and my reply does not register due to the server not being able to cope.

Always but always, EM, when you write a longish post, copy it so all is not lost. Then, when you get a second chance, you only need paste to recreate your post.

I agree, and it is what I try to remember to do it, TW, but in this day and age it should not be required, should it?!

What really annoys me is the closing down for essential maintenance at 22:00 without any warnings, especially after Rowena assured us last year, (or was it the year before?) that she would forewarn us when it was likely to happen. How long did that last, a couple of months perhaps!!yell

I tend to mostly laugh at it these days, NTH. I've more important things to concern myself with than second rate IT systems. It’s all about state of mind. 😀

    Shambles isn’t it🤨

We could use this thread to keep in touch, then when it gets reported for going “off topic” someone might intervene and give it some attention…….

    Lateral thinking…..🤣
