Choosing French Aires
Hi All
Some advice please, how do people choose / find Aires when travelling. I’ve searched online but can’t really find an app
or online site that actually lists and describes sites.

For Motorhome aires (not autoroute aires) CamperContact.com plus name of town gives a list with prices, photos and reviews. That same company has an app too.
For campsites CampingFrance.com plus name of town or departement gives you just about every site there is apart from a few small unlicensed sites run by expats in their back gardens.
But simply Googling what you want is usually productive.

Can you use aires with a caravan? The OP is shown as a caravanner.

If you are referring to camping Aires the majority of them do not allow caravans, however there is a group called Camping Car Parks that you can join. At certain times of year (usually June to Sept) you can stay on them with a caravan or tent. Lots of these sites are ex Municipal and the fees are very reasonable usually between 10 to 14 euros a night.
For the MH Aires we use park4night and searchforsites. These 2 apps will also show campsites in the area.

Another +1 for camping car park Aires. A selection from June last year. The one with a building and cabin had facilities and could be used by caravans and tents in the summer months.

Yes, there are places in France that tourists might well want to visit - such as Annecy - where the Camping Car Parks chain has nothing listed. In fact the only aire I know of at Annecy is this one in the photo. A campsite would be far more appealing, but French Motorhomers pile in side by side there and shun campsites

In principal ET I would agree. However, they may merely be using it for parking and the camp sites might not be a convenient walking distance from what they are visiting. You’d be hard pressed to find a campsite in the middle of Uzes, but this free Aire at the winery is so located. For us it’s very much about location, after all we aren’t stopping for a 10 day holiday, perhaps only a night at most two.

100 percent agree with SteveL. FYI the best Apps are as already highlighted, Park4Night and Search4Sites. Both include Camping Car Park Aires and are available on the web and in the App stores. With memebrship to Park4night, you can create your route and see what sites are available along and close to that route and use filters to select your preferred types. Those are the ones I use and the reviews help to decide what might suit me.

As you say ET "A campsite would be far more appealing" I can see at least 8 MH,s in your photo, think of the fire hazard with 8 vehicles parked so close together and people cooking or doing whatever in their MH's, and unfortunately fires do happen, one only last month in Spain at Bolnuevo Campsite, there are images of burnt our washing machines etc on the web, apparently the fire took out a whole row of mainly MH's.
