In my head🤣, me and him, striding along a beach, reliving our youthful days…dah dah….dah dah da da dah…da daah da da dah! We jump the hurdles as well🤣🤣
Its a people stopper when we are out. It’s not that unusual to see folks out with small dogs in carriages, but you rarely see larger dogs. A lot of dog owners ask us where we got it from, as they can be quite hard to source that size. Imported from Germany at the time, but I think they are around on Amazon a lot easier now. Thankfully, with a few treats, and some ding ding training with a bike bell (the old Pavlov trick🤣), he quickly got used to it, and now loves it. We have to be wary not to take him too far in it, as all the jolting can be a bit wearing on his joints, but it does mean we can walk a few miles with him. Preferable not too hilly, as he does weigh a bit. We do “double headers”, both of us pushing if it’s a steep one🤣
Metheven, I know what you mean, Millie our other Lab couldn’t be persuaded in, even for a biscuit. She hated it. Handy though, if we get a pup, will get it used to it straight away. Ramp training will happen as well👍 A lot kinder to joints, particularly from 4x4 vehicles.

Just a quick sharing of an encounter with a female Roe Deer this morning.*To Meth-all Dog lovers share your grief at the loss of a loyal & loving friend, I remember well your early posts about her. In time the intense pain & loss will be replaced by memories that produce warm feelings not tears, we all share your pain*.
As I was sat letting my now physically slowing friends(sleeping tbh🙂)rest in one of the Copses I use I saw a female Roe Deer gingerly approaching the Nor’Easterly section of Copse that runs along the field ditch(W to E). It is quite shallow & leads to a dew pond. It is moist at the bottom but no running water after quite a while with frost but no rain. She regularly stopped to smell the air which was driven on a light Northerly so we were not apparent. She was quite beautiful, this was a gift to be this close, I can see why Disney chose the Roe Deer to base ‘Bambi’ on. She spun & headed East along the ditch seeking refuge in the dew pond no doubt, we made no noises, it was a Woodpigeon alighting on a branch above my head before spotting us then clapping back the way it came that spooked the Roe Deer. What a gift of an encounter that was nature never stops giving. Enjoy your day & may you find your own happy place.5 -

Thank you👍🏻, I need to add-the Dew pond is a tiny watering hole that has been there for centuries, it is surrounded by willows, no doubt covered by some law for its age. It read like the Deer had gone swimming😊. . .Not so👍🏻

That's so true.
When I let Tess out into the back garden in the evening, she often goes for a mooch around the shrubs for ages and calling her name has no effect but rattle the container with her food in and she comes back instantly.😃

We don’t do tricks really with our dogs, they are taught the safety basics of sit, stay, come, down, and the kind of manners that makes them a joy to be around and safe to be around other humans and dogs. But I occasionally while away an hour trying to get the “give a paw” routine taught, with varying degrees of success. Female Airedales grasped it quite quickly. However, Bingley, our Airedale dog was more of a challenge (or so I thought). Quarter pound of cheese, cut into little treats, and still no joy. All I got was that tilted head “how does it go” sort of look, every time I asked, and a slight lift of the paw. Then OH pointed out that he was brighter than me, and that he knew exactly how little he did have to do, to get the proffered bit of cheese🤣 1-0 to Bingley.
Labradors🤔 Millie came to us fully ambidextrous, should could give both paws, left and right. But then she would do almost anything for a treat. Choccy? 12 years and counting, he doesn’t show the slightest hint that he understands what is required of him from “give a paw”. I still didn’t know his name at eight months when we got him, so it was easy to change it to something we liked. He’s not greedy though, unusual for his breed. He’d rather be massaged and tickled🤣
You never really know what you are going to get with each different dog, it’s what makes them so interesting. Airedales you don’t train really. One day they do as they’re told, another day🤷♀️🤣

It’s a canine thing🤷🏻♂️. Canine Psychologists have a word for it with the acronym ’DD’ discretionary deafness. . .It’s down to what they get out of it😂, they got character that’s for sure, I have viewed all my Dogs as family members & as such my patience is always willing to be adjusted in their favour👍🏻. Don’t use the house as a toilet, come immediately to the single whistle(nuclear alert), stay close when out, ignore other Dogs & folk unless encouraged to mix. Oh & don’t climb Trees👍🏻

They are fun that’s for sure, every day a learning day🤣 Our pair of Airedale pups housetrained super easily, all sorted within a week. Great we thought. Two years later, not having had any mishaps, we took in MIL’s gorgeous but very elderly Labrador. Bessie was 17, and still full of fun, but time meant her bladder wasn’t functioning over long overnight periods. So she had the occasional mishap, on paper put down just for her. Along comes Lily the Airedale, not fond of rain, snow or the cold. Particularly being outed early morning. So, as Bessie is allowed, why shouldn’t she do the same, and stay warm🤣 Little blighter used to stroll into kitchen, look at me and then squat for a pee!😱 I am sure Canine Psychologists have a special “terrier” category🤣

This morning we had to make the worse decision to have our lovely Husky (Sula) put to sleep , the last few days she had been loosing weight, so took her to the vet where they diagnosed acute kidney failure, and the kindest thing to do was to end her life . Sometimes you have to put your pet first and not try to hang on them for your own sake
life is going to be so different now , as we have decided not to have any more dogs , I have had various dogs for over 50 years , and now it’s time for us

Thoughts are with you HD. It is so, so hard, and all you can do is the best for them, and it’s a horrible but brave decision to make. Treasure those memories. We are like you, had dogs most of our lives, and it doesn’t get any easier. Wishing you all the best.

Really sorry to read your news HD. It's a heart wrenching position we've been in several times and it never gets any easier. But it's the decision we know, when we take on our beloved companions, that we're likely to have to make one day. We have to steel ourselves to make that decision for their benefit rather than our own, which is what you have bravely done. Cherish the memories. Our thoughts will be with you.

Oh HD, such a hard decision to make. Our hearts go out to you. We had to put our Labradoodle put to sleep at two and a half due to cancer, so we know exactly what you are going through

Same from us too HD been there ourselves and now dog free took a long time to get use to not taking a dog out.
Tda thought of you today as our local selling site has 2 chocolate Labradors for sale 1, 7 and 1,10 both in good health going for free due to divorce such a shame, friends of ours got their dog again due to a divorce now 5 years as they have had her for 2 years a mixture of breeds but she does moult all the time.

Oh Redkite, that is just awful, those poor dogs. They will be traumatised if split up, we had to deal with over a year of a very anxious Golden Lab after she was given up to us. I hope someone can take them both, and they find a good home.

So sad, Redkite. Fingers crossed they get a good home, and can stay together. It’s a big ask is taking on two dogs, but hopefully someone will. Sad altogether with the divorce, but it’s not uncommon to find dogs ending up needing new homes because of a divorce.

Cartoon of the day……reminds me of a holiday in caravan with friends. We had filled the fridge, forgot to put the safety catch on…….10 minutes later, their Labrador had eaten everything🤣🤣

Rather enjoyed Channel 4’s coverage of Crufts this year. Final line up of dogs was very good, some a bit different to the usual. That was a lovely happy little dog that took the trophy, could well imagine that breed being a very nice family pet in the hands of the right sort of owner. They were all great athletic and healthy looking examples thankfully. I did love the Irish Wolfhound and the Wire Haired Fox Terrier. Poodles have never been my thing really, but away from the ridiculous show clips they are wonderfully athletic dogs. I could have happily owned every one last night😁
