Yes, bit too big for our little MH🤣 We once stayed on a CL near Bamburgh with caravan and our three Airedales. Next door van had two Irish Wolfhounds, not quite sure where they slept🤣

Very poignant nellie, now going thru all the pro's and con's as to whether we should take on another dog, have to say the house is very quiet without Rufs, and i am sure when we go away in the caravan next week it is going to be very strange even if i did used to curse at having to get out of bed at 0600hrs to do the necessary, however, my OH's stroke has left her a little bit unsteady on her feet, so frightened that if the dog should pull she would be over, and i know you cannot put money on the friendship a dog gives, but Ruf's was costing us £150 approx per month, but early days yet laughing, no we are not having a handbag dog yell

Hi all, I'm very sad to let you know that we had to part with our lovely Lurcher Tess last Monday. Unfortunately a cancerous lump had spread to her organs and we couldn't bear to see her suffering. After seven days we're still getting used to the empty hole she has left in our lives. I was the one who took her for walks and am still going out each morning, in fact walking further than Tess could manage in recent weeks. I'm not contemplating taking another dog on but we have a few dogs within our close family and friends.

All the best to all you dog lovers.

I'm so sorry to read of beloved pet losses. Take care of yourselves whilst you grieve and adjust to a life without them.

"Hi all, I'm very sad to let you know that we had to part with our lovely Lurcher Tess last Monday. Unfortunately a cancerous lump had spread to her organs and we couldn't bear to see her suffering"

sorry for your loss know how you feel, cancerous growths seem to be very common in dogs and when they get to a certain age invasive surgery is the last thing your dog needs. We have lost 2 Westies and now 1 Westie cross, the cross had a tumour on his spleen, but the scan also identified what was cancer in the surrounding area. I did say to the lovely Easteren Europen vet, "I hope when it is my turn it is so simple and you are available" she just smiled.

I’m so sorry to hear that, Nevers. Tess came to you in need of a good home and she got one. You have your memories and know you did the best thing you possibly could for her. You will get used to living a life without a dog but will always remember her.

    All the best.

Nevs, mate I am so sorry for her passing. You made a superb selfless decision to stop her pain. You put your needs last it was a sacrifice we’ve all taken & there will be many reading your words with a heavy heart reliving the brother & sisterhood of similar loss. Wet eyes are the least of the pain. It won’t stop soon but the feeling of personal loss will be replaced with the memories of joy. There is not much to say other than no more pain for her-you will carry yours for many, many months.

I offer you my best wishes from one Dog lover to another.

Only just read this and very sorry to read your news, nevers. It's a heart wrenching decision that has to be made but you'll know that you've done the right thing by Tess and you'll have so many happy memories of your times together.

It's still obviously very hard and you say you're not thinking of taking on another dog, but have you considered volunteering for the Cinnamon Trust - they are always on the look out for volunteer walkers and you can offer to go as often as suits.

    Will be thinking of you.

Nevers, I am sure you must be devastated, but take heart that you will have given Tess a lovely life with you both, full no doubt of love and fun. A very hard decision to make, but all credit to you for not letting her suffer.

If you recall our meet up a few years ago, you had been badly let down trying to take on a rehome dog, but shortly after you found Tess, and she found a forever home. Take care, we will be thinking of you. Enjoy your other family pets.

I’m sure that pain remains, N, but time is a good healer and eventually those happier times and associated memories become stronger. I was in bits after the loss of our last dog so much so I couldn’t bare the thought of going through the pain again. Like you, we have family dogs to enjoy and now fabulous memories of those absent faithful family canine members.
There are some bonuses mind, we do not have to feed or pickup the residue after, holidays are freer and cafe/restaurants visits not restricted to dog friendly premises, going away for a night or two to friends became easier and not having to be home by certain times if loved one was left home alone. One downside is I’ve put on weight  as my walks aren’t as frequent. No help at all any of this I know right now but my thoughts are certainly with you. Time does heal.

Like several folk here, I no longer have a dog to share my life with. A friend recommended the YouTube channels about Sherpa the husky and his friends. The videos are pure joy to watch. The bond and love between man and dog make for beautiful viewing and help fill a gap.

The channels Sherpa and Sherpa's Day are good starters and there’s a bit of vanning in there as well.

Like TW we no longer own a dog, or any other pet, and I just want to wish all those pet owners well for the forthcoming annual noise fest that is "Bonfire Night", albeit that the night part of that seems to be very elastic.

I know from personal experience how upsetting the night can be so am just hoping that your pet can cope with it. Good luck.

We were always lucky in that respect, WN, as all our dogs pretty much ignored fireworks but some dogs react terribly and it’s a horrendous experience for them and their owners. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was just the one night…..

I've mentioned in the past TW so apologies for repeating myself but I held our Westie in my arms as she died from a heart attack after 3 hours of pure panic after the night of the fifth. Unfortunately we were banned from giving her calming meds as she was on other meds and the vet was adamant that it would do her harm.

We even went for a 4 hour drive to Angelsey and back during that evening to avoid the noise but some idiot decided to have their fun at 1 in the morning.

Our last dog was fine. I think we were more on edge than her for the first couple of years.

I feel for those other animals like Horses out in the open.

That’s tragic, WN. Don’t apologise as it's a story that needs telling to bring the truth of what can happen to public awareness.

Wherenext,I did know of your sad sad firework night. It doesn't hurt to let folk know how these things can turnout.

Fortunately our dog doesn't seem bothered 🤞

Personally I dislike the noise of fireworks. The displays are wonderful. I don't understand why they can't be silent. They're advertised as very loud 😡😡😡

I was listening to the Handel's music the firework suite. Surely if they were as loud as they are now, music wouldn't have been needed!

Just had 5 minutes or so of fireworks from a neighbouring garden. Not overly loud. All windows closed, TV local news on. Dog wandered over from her bed to sit beside me.......

I went to a local display last summer that used powered gliders (very long wings) that had the fireworks attached to them, and the gliders had light displays along the fusalage, so the display was about 1500/2000 feet up.

It was very good, but I missed the bangs etc that you get with a traditional display

I'd have liked to see the display, but wouldn't miss the bangs etc at all, in fact, I would prefer it without bangs. To me, the display is better without all the noise.

Plymouth hosts a firework 'competition' each year on two evenings in August. My opinion is that it’s a tourist attraction more than a competition but that’s beside the point. Professional teams let off fireworks over Plymouth Sound and it’s a spectacular sight BUT the noise travels far into the City and, particularly over the coastal areas, can be disturbing.

Anyone staying at Plymouth Sound CAMC site may wish to check the dates before booking in order to see, or avoid, the displays.

We were lucky with our last dog Tess, she was very laid back and didn’t take any notice of the bangs and flashes. Not so our old boy Dyson he used to shake with fear, each dog is different,

Living in a semirural area we get quite a lot of local families who organise their own displays unfortunately not just on the fifth.

On a better note our local fire service have organised what they call a quiet display, none of the fireworks they use make a bang. I think this is the way to go.smile

Hi, Nevers, good to see you.

I wonder if it’s something inbred in laid back lurchers that makes them ignore loud noises? 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Maybe TW.

Our daughter's last two Lurchers didn't take any notice. Sadly they lost Kai their last Lurcher to cancer but now have another rescue Lurcher. He is younger and more excitable, this will be his first November with them so not sure how he will react yet.

We have been fortunate with our dogs, but with them all being Springers I guess they are inbred to not react to loud bangs. We did have an incident when a young hooligan let a banger off right by Reuel which did upset him, but that only lasted for a short while. Just to be on the safe side we now try to be away on a CL somewhere out in the country, like this year, where the noise levels from the fireworks are relative low.

Another good FB blog for dog lovers is Max Out in the Lake District, which plays out most mornings and evening. A great favourite with OH.
