We had a clear sky last night, and on our last walk out, just after 10:00, I caught sight of 10 shooting stars, most, but not all, travelling in a NW direction. Wonder if I will see any tonight?

Our Rowan tree is about 12 feet high by 8 feet wide and is thick with berries (or was), the most berries we have seen for years. About two weeks ago the blackbirds started feeding on the berries, up to about 12 at a time with more in the trees around it. Yesterday the mistle thrushes arrived. So far only about six but, if similar to previous years, that number should double. Not bad for an urban garden.

Now got just about a full set, blackbirds, mistle thrushes, redwings, fieldfares and song thrushes. The rate they're stripping the tree there'll be nothing left in a couple of days. Sat here watching them and getting nothing else done!

Foxes. They walk the streets in West London, and my daughter there has them lying out on her tiny scrap of artificial grass lawn.
But here in an untamed valley,, on the edge of wild moorland and woodland, we had the very first fox for about ten years today near the house. We don’t put food out for them in the way towns people do, so he went away across the river to see if Mary had locked her chickens away safely.
What’s the opposite of re wilding which has happened in the 40 years we have lived out here? Even the foxes have gone.

We have lots of foxes and badgers here, I put out scraps sometimes but they are good at foraging, all local chickens are well protected at the moment because of avian flu, stout netting over runs too.
Today we had our lone Fieldfare again, apples are the main draw when thawed out a bit.

There are a few apple trees and hawthorns by the site and the ground is strewn with apples. There are all those variety that you have seen John, having a feast both on the ground and in the trees.

Just good chance, none last night so I guess the majority have passed, and it is cloudy now so no chance of seeing a stray one later.

Not what I have seen, although there have been lots about, but am just listening to a song by Jack Rutter.... Fieldfares.
Well worth a listen too, if one can find it.

My garden is full of food....but no birds.
Previous years I have had a very busy garden, birds coming and going constantly.
This year A couple of Blackbirds, 2 Wood pigeons and Robin....something is up.
I have just thrown away 2 feeders full of mildewed peanuts.
Something is definitely happening to our bird population.

We have comings and goings, always have done. Our garden was full of birds, went away for a three week spell (feeders not refilled) came back about 10 days ago. Garden still empty having cleaned and refilled. Our friends garden on the other side of the town is full of them. Quality of available food can also attract them elsewhere. They will stay with a regular and reliable food source and slowly return as and when essential. Have faith. However they do need our help as our wildlife in general is suffering due to many factors, most caused by us. The grass may just be greener the other side of the fence at present.

The site we are on at present has a couple bird feeding stations and they have been in position for years, and are very well populate. The usual Tits, including Longtails, Tree Sparrows and Great Spotted Woodpeckers are regular visitors, along with the occasional Siskins. There are also Tawny Owls in the trees around the site and the other night, while out for our last walk, I heard and then saw at least 2 foxes watching us from a distance.

On a CS last week and spotted a pair of green woodpeckers, spotted woodpecker, Jay, red kit and moorhens on the lakes.
The site owners all black cat called zeus was the size if a young black panther if that counts, probably why we saw no rabbits!
Currently at Dulverton and seen only the odd blackbird.

I used to be in awe of such heavenly sights, sadly my eyesight isn’t what it used to be, nor do we seem to get those clear nights when countless stars and planets studded the vista. Make you realise how amazing ‘things’ (lost for the right word) are. We are here for only the minuscule micro moment in celestial terms but sadly what damage we can do to our own planet and the life on board,

Oh my, Scarborough has an unusual tourist there at the moment. Thor, an adolescent Walrus. A first for Yorkshire, he’s being closely monitored and protected from too much attention. Having a bit of a rest…….
