Dartford Crossing

We are heading to France for the first time since 2019 and plan to use the Channel Tunnel rather that our usual Hull - Zeebrugge ferry. What is the best way to pay the bridge toll at Dartford? I was thinking about setting up a pay-as-you go account. Apart from the return journey I can't see us being down that way again any time soon. Is setting up an account the best way?

Probably not worth setting up. I think the minimum you can load your account is £10. We’ve had an account for years and before Covid either us or my Bin L coming from France used it at least once a year and individual crossings were a bit cheaper. It’s got about £4 left on it and each March they have emailed to ask if I want to keep it open, as it has been flagged as inactive. On the last occasion they implied that if it wasn’t used in the next 12 months it would be closed. Shame as  we will probably use the crossing later next year.

You can make a one off payment on line or by phone. Details on their website.

We also had an account which was fine when we were using the Dartford Crossing a couple of times a year. But as Steve says once you don't use the account on a regular basis they don't seem to like maintaining accounts just for occasional use. The AA has this on their webpage about different methods of paying if it helps? I am surprised there is not an App for one off payments?

We had an account, minimum you could add was £10. Minimum top up too. Couldn't use 2019, or 2020 they kept our money and closed the account!

You can pay at special places, cantvremember details but I expect they're in David's link, before midnight on day of travel - but it's expensive if it gets overlooked!

We used it once last year, we paid after we'd used it, you've got around 24 hours to pay on line, easy to do and cheaper than setting up an account with a minimum deposit that you might not use again.

We use the Woolwich Ferry when going that way.  It's free.

If you click on further with the AA gov.uk link there is an easy one off payment section.

Go to the Dartford Crossing web site and do a one off payment for the two trips. Straight forward. Keep your receipt just in case!

Thanks everyone. Phone or on line payment looks like the way to go for us.
