Visiting Provence?

Hi All

We are travelling to France in june/july via Dieppe with some friends. We have around 2 1/2 weeks. We are considering going to Provence.

Now, allowing for some what if's and maybe's, we are looking for suggested stops and +/- tourist sights. Is the time we have realistic enough? obviously, we would like to spend longer. I appreciate that it's a long way, and I want to enjoy it, not think it a slog.

Thanks for looking.

AH

This is a classic ‘how long is a piece of string’ question. We’re all different, but I would take at least 3 days on that journey assuming all I wanted to do was get there without it being too much of a slog. So, allowing for return, about 11 days at your destination and not much sightseeing en-route. Only you can decide if that’s long enough. Provence is a great place to visit so any time spent there will be worthwhile.

When we were younger on several occasions we visited Provence on a 2 / 3 week holiday. One time we went all the way to Sorrento. In the case of Provence we went down with one overnight stop, spent a week or so at one site, ranging out from that. The remainder of the time was spent getting back with a few 2 / 3 night stops. At the time we thoroughly enjoyed it and didn’t consider it a slog. However, wouldn’t want to do it now though.😀 Personally at our age (70) if we only had  2.5 weeks I would stay broadly north of the Loire.

The time you have is fine, a couple of days getting there then a week to 10 days there rest of what's left coming back.

If you are in a MH no problem, towing a caravan might slow you down a bit depends on how many hours you are happy to drive for.

We've done it to the South of France/ Spain in that time with 2 children. That was a long time ago now but if it's where you want to be then give it a go.

We went to inland Provence several times with a caravan when we had only two weeks off work. In those days we were living 100 miles from Portsmouth so we headed there after work on a Friday and caught  the late night boat to Le Havre - does that still sail?

It was two 300 mile days to get down to the Avignon /Arles / Apt triangle, and with a two week time limitation we went no further than that, but there are a dozen different sites in that area to choose from. So one overnight on the way there and one on the way back but never pre booked or pre planned , though we just  tried to get halfway.

But friends who went with us once said it was too far for them and never went with us again!

We went to Provence area a few years ago, near Avignon, at L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.  Love the area, and I’m sure you would enjoy it.  We started at Zeebrugge so gave ourselves 4 days to get down there (being in the older age group!) stopping around Clermont-Ferrand and Millau (nice place, and bridge was amazing) before heading to Provence.  We did have a longer timeframe than 2.5 weeks, but I’m sure it can be done as the roads are good but it is a long way.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Having discussed with our friends, we have opted for Brittany. We both think that having an open ferry return would give us more options and avoid any rush.

Wow that’s quite a change, but no lesser a destination as long as the weather behaves itself. However, as you say it will probably make for a more relaxed trip and the option to stay over when you find somewhere to your liking. I’m currently at Camping Les Sables Blancs in Concarneau, lovely 4 star site with pool/hot tub and restaurant. Walking distance to beach (white sand as name suggests) and old town/port - recommended if you find yourselves in that part of Brittany.

The grey waste dump is in an awkward position if there's someone behind waiting to exit the site though. Pitches are a bit cramped too. Nice walk down to the town.
