Calais to Perpignan
i was reading the above thread and saw most folk preferred the route through Rouen. We had planned to head down the centre - Paris - Clermont - Ferrand.
How have folks found navigating Paris?

Think the numbers choosing to avoid it says a lot!
Only done it once, from SW to NE and it was not extremely busy but, I presume, if you go overnight maybe not so.0 -
There are so many ways of navigating Paris - in the days before we gave up going via Calais my choice was to approach on the A 16 to junction 10 and to by pass the city wide outside on the West side using N184. Others get tangled with the inner Peripherique which can be frenetic when it’s busy - but time of day and day of the week has a considerable bearing on your question.

I only once went via Paris using the N104 ringroad to the east. I vowed never again and I have kept to my word.
Always use Roeun to Orleans, there is very little difference in time or miles going south. For peace of mind I would suggest go via Rouen

I used the Francillienne once as well. I'd sooner use the Periphique but as you say Rouen/Orleans if coming from Calais. I'd use Portsmouth/Caen and hang the expense.

We drove into Paris when we were going to stay there for a few days - several times - to see the sights in the city and to go out to Versailles as well. It’s really not the problem some make it out to be. Certainly it’s not hell to go to a campsite there, and using one of the by passes to get round the city is pretty straightforward.

We too travel with a dog and have used this route to bypass a lot of the traffic holdups in Rouen.
It also has the added advantage that there is a very convenient vets (Clinique Vétérinaire Mon Véto) at Igoville which is adjacent to a large Super U supermarket car park with a 24hr filling station.
Just a mile down the road is a good Aire de Camping Car outside the Camp Eure municipal site.

When we first started to travel to the South of France the Rouen/A75 route wasn't an option as the route wasn't then built. In those times we used the A26 and associated motorways via Lyon and down to Orange where you could turn either left or right depending on your destination. We did a couple of times use the A104 around the east and south of Paris but you did have to have your wits about you as junctions came fast a furious! The problem is I think is that nearly all route planners will route you through Paris whether its the best route or not! Obviously if you are heading for one of a couple of campsites actually in Paris you have no choice but it will make for a much calmer journey the further you are from Paris. A thought that rather appeals to my weird sense of humour is that I don't recall anyone asking whether they should tow through London to get to Dover
