Touring as a Carer
After many years of touring in France my partner has been diagnosed with a neurological condition, known as CBD. This is a progressive complaint and will, inevitably, see the end of our touring.
However, the condition is also a slow progression and we are just at the start! My partner is still mobile and her mental capacity is much as it always was. Her diction is becoming affected and her mechanical functions are limited.
We are still coming to terms with this problem and as part of our assessment of just how daring we might be I wondered if any members who have similar problems have discovered ways of making a modest trip to the Loire a possibility?
One thought was that maybe the club's organised 'holidays' could be one way of avoiding a situation whereby if I became injured or unable to drive there would be assistance for my companion.

Obviously you need good comprehensive insurance and Red Pennant is a good starting point. As I understand it they changed underwriters a few years ago and from my own experience they don't seem to be as comprehensive as they once were. This is surprising as the Club are well aware of the age group they are dealing with and their many and varied conditions suffered from! My understanding is that if the main driver is out of action for whatever reason they do have members that can come to your rescue if it is not possible to ship the unit back to the UK on a low loader. Having said that, and I don't wish to sound grim, but what if you had to go to hospital and were incapacitated how would you partner cope? Do you have grown up children who could come and and join you and to make suitable arrangements and take some of the stress out of the situation? None of us know how we would cope with this kind of scenario but a good starting point is to know in advance what sort of help you have at hand and an idea on how others will cope. I hope you find a satisfactory solution and can continue touring abroad.

We always take out Red Pennant insurance (I am now disabled so only one driver) Have a look at RP on the internet - there are different levels available, it's possible to read what is covered with each (a bit brain dazzling), we have found the staff at HQ helpful when phoned, although this was some years ago. Luckily we've not had to use the insurance despite a few dodgy moments. Best wishes

The cover which was bundled with the Nationwide Flexplus account provided by Britannia included exactly such a provision. However they have now changed their supplier to the AA - no idea why - and that cover is now described as at the AA's discretion.

Thanks for the responses! I have always used RP and only called on them twice - once due to stupidity on my part, once through vehicle failure. Both were dealt with in an excellent manner.
TBH the possible problems or 'what ifs' put many off without my additional problems.
Once you add all the 'ifs' up I realise that it sounds a risky deal but 'never to tour again' sounds pretty severe when the day arrives!!!
