What happens now if people have to leave a site due to problems, eg flooding? I think refunds are given from central accounts aren't they?

The deposits I mentioned in the last post were in force when they cancelled our Easter outing one year to Malvern site due to waterlogging. Still waiting for the £5. What do you reckon my chances are if I asked for it?smile

One disadvantage of the CCC booking system is the "deposit"of say £25.00 is applicable to only that site.

If you have to change your plans suddenly, say major traffic jam,or family illness, and have to use another site,it causes chaos trying to swap the booking deposit over,to the "new" site.Otherwise the balance will not add up.

We joined in 1998, deposits were still required then, and for a few years after that,  maybe up till around 2002?

Apart from time spent on the phone, we didn’t have any major problem when we cancelled Scone in May because of our second covid jab. Used the deposit to book another site for later in the year at the time of cancelling. However, I do believe there is an issue over transfer, if it’s a camping in the forest site. Although we booked one, not tried cancelling any yet.

I originally joined in the mid 80's but my first club site wasn't until 2011 so no recollection of these things. Refunds of deposits wouldn't be required if credit card details were held and payment need only be taken upon arrival or a penalty for 'no shows'. Why make life administratively difficult?

I suppose it would depend how they set things up. Do the club have a secure system on which they hold all our credit card details, like Tesco or Amazon. Or do they use a third party secure site like the C&CC. There each booking is treated as a separate entity. They have your permission to take the deposit there and then and the balance on the day of arrival. I know they are independent bookings, as when I changed my credit card, each one had to be updated separately. It took ages on the phone.☹️

I suppose at some point CAMC will need to dragged, kicking and screaming into the 20th (😉) century....

no doubt, making use of the advances made in the latest one will have to wait a bit longer...

I’d go for the interest as well😂

    Mind that flying pig......🤣

I’d sub contract the bookings and payments out to Tesco. They know how to do online retail and logistics.

As far as I can recall, very young CC members in the 1980’s, you sent a deposit cheque off by post, £5. It was deducted from your overall fee. We never had to cancel, so no idea what happened if you did.

I can’t ever recall being escorted to a pitch by CC wardens though. Mind, our outfit was inspected and we got a full 20 questions interview before they would let two (unmarried) youngsters and a huge Rottweiler, in a strange camper van anywhere near Club hallowed ground🤣 The twitching curtains used to cause quite a draft......

"I can’t ever recall being escorted to a pitch by CC wardens"

I can. Back in the 70s we went as non-members to a CC site in Norfolk and were escorted by a sargeant major type who ensured all vans were pitched in line nose to tail the length of the site and checked the line to make sure no one was a few inches out of kilter.

Is it any wonder we didn’t become members for another 30 years or so?🥺😄

I too can remember being escorted to our pitch by the warden on CC sites. We just thought that it was the norm, at the time, as it also used to happen in Commercial sites then too. Not that we used CC sites very often as it was the time when we used to rally in the main as well as using CLs.

Long before and when we joined in the  1960s/until the late 1990s many of this clubs staff both on sites and at head office were ex forces personnel

Several of the regional managers were retired officers and site wardens were non cons the managers at commons Wood was an ex csm ,and he  said that jobs w with the cc were always advertised for them to join

A bit more. Info that not many are aware of the cc was at some point in the past  in a financial tie up with one of the caravan magazine publishers

The group where I read it has had 866 comments since 10pm last night. So far there is a mix of answers but 'against' seems to be the biggest majority.

I've just set up a poll of For and Against (if it gets approval) just to try and get a clearer picture

    Peedee

I have not read all the posts, too many as Harry suggests. What always amuses me is that it seems to come as a big surprise to so many? As I pointed out it has been mentioned in the minutes of the last two AGM's. There are a few who agree with the idea but as you say quite a lot of anti's. Mind you when it is announced officially I am sure this forum will be buzzing with outragesmile

This is part of the wording from The Magazine.

“So we are looking to introduce a new refundable deposit system (subject to terms and conditions) to reduce speculative bookings”

So quite how will it work I wonder. With a refundable deposit people can still book speculatively knowing they can get their deposit back.

There are many who just join the Club to go to sites and that is their focus. They take no notice of any other Club business.

That does sound like early Club😂 We had a longish break when we discovered a lovely family run Site in Bodinnick. It had changed a bit when we rejoined in early 90’s, still deposits, but no escort.

The announcement of this web site is now on here. The first two questions are very telling. As for the example of the booking page I can't read it

I think introducing deposits is the worst thing the club could do and I’m sure the majority of club members will be against it. It appears that the club has given way to a vocal minority of members who feel it will solve all there problems, which it won’t of course. For most members it will be an unnecessary inconvenience.
The difficulties we have with COVID at the moment means that the whole booking process confused by people getting infected and having to change their plans at short notice, will we need to produce a doctors note to prove we are ill now to avoid losing our deposits or what.

To say I am disappointed in this announcement is an understatement.

Agree...but there are T&C's to the deposit which we are not privy to as yet...

Reading the Q&A s of the new booking system ,and from information I have ,been given from some of those at the coal facesurprised

It seems correct, that those who at EGH seem  are very much head in sand with how the majority of members use the booking system at present, undecided

One example is where you want to extend a booking? It is said in the answers cancel a  do a new booking? Just shows how out of touch  EGH are if they think that would be possible on busy sites, when others are hovering waiting for pitchesundecided

    Harry

The link contents are very informative, especially when you drop down all the menus. As JVB alluded to in an earlier post the deposit is refundable up to three weeks before arrival on site with the promise that exception circumstances for late cancellation will be looked at. There are still a lot of details still to be made available, for instance could you move a deposit to another site within the final three weeks? The balance of payment will be taken the day before arrival although you can opt out of this if you wish.

Grass pitches are going to be a £1 less than hardstandings but they are still discussing whether there should be a difference in price between awning and non awning pitches.

PS - I have locked this thread as we now have the answer but have started this thread https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/club-together/discussions/sites-touring/uk-sites-touring/new-site-booking-system/ so that members can discuss their thoughts on the new system
