We didnt have post codes, computers or mechanised sorting in the 1960s. Parcels took days and days to arrive and the whole operation was labour intensive.

Whilst providing more employment may be seen as a good thing, the costs of running such an inefficient system would be prohibitive today and the costs would be passed on to the customer.

There is no comparison between today’s methods and those of 60 years ago. Forget the past.

Sorry, but that was the way it read, at least to me. It is very difficult to appreciate where commentators are coming from on a forum like this where it isn't possible to read facial expressions to fully understand the points they are trying to make. We, ie this country, has added greatly to the way the whole world now operates, be it in industry, science, medicine etc but so have many other countries.   "No man is an island"

Absolutely. Royal Mail was a nationalised industry totally under Govt control and part of the Civil Service while Amazon was somewhere explorers went in South America.😄

True no man is an Island but the UK certainly is. I think there’s not many who don’t know that the industrial revolution started here🤷🏻‍♂️

Agricultural Revolution came first. Britain learned how to feed itself, those who previously starved to death lived a bit longer, had tiny amounts to spend on better produced goods, which fuelled the innovation and technology that followed, the poor in the main stayed poor, a few got very rich indeed, luckily a few of the rich were Philanthropists, who cared about their workers, gave a bit back to humanity.

After that, things went downhill as Britain sought to dominate and colonise other bits of the World, other countries were pillaged for their natural resources, people in those countries often treat appallingly. Wars fought to sustain this position of global dominance.

Fast forward to today, lots of innovation, a few super rich who can’t spell Philanthropy, never mind understand it, far too many in poverty one way or another, we rely on other countries to provide far too much of our staple industries and food, a rotten electoral system, an out of touch, uncaring Government, and deeply divided (one way or another) society. We do have an aircraft carrier, but not sure if it has any planes yet, World class nail bars, prize money shufflers higher than Doctors and Nurses, and an Education system that isn’t quite sure what it’s trying to achieve.🤷‍♀️ We have a lot to be proud of, but at the moment, it’s hiding behind a lot of bad stuff☹️ And not very intelligent politicians, of all affiliations.

There is an interesting article in The Grocer about the demands for CO2 and how it is prioritised, at least fizzy drinks are lower in priority than nuclear coolant. I had some slightly fizzy cider recently but prefer it flat and without additives in general. Can we manage with less when it's needed in the NHS and other major providers?

I hate fizz in my beer, cider or tonic water etc, I always partially unscrew the cap on mixers so they can go flat in the fridge. Ditto bottled beer. What’s this obsession with fizz in drink? It’s generally the case that when a pub dispenses beer from a keg it sells out quickly and not just to blokes with beards!

Some wines make their own fizz, so I'm OK with that. wink

So is 2 vans delivering 2 parcels more efficient than 1 van delivering 2 parcels. Plus they were all collected one day sorted out overnight put into loading bays for the various towns and delivered the next day. All without computers and postcodes.

It’s not for me to comment on the efficiency level given that so much information is missing. I was elaborating on your view of how things were 60 years ago which has no bearing at all on the here and now.

Do you really think that the amount of parcels/orders were similar to what they are in this age of online ordering? There are only 10 houses on our little street, but it’s not uncommon to have a postal delivery, a parcel van, and another 3-4 delivery vans dropping of items each day here. I ordered a couple of cables from Apple last week. Placed order at 10.30pm, by 11am next morning, I was unwrapping them. It’s a different World.

I was trying to point out how there is double the co2 emissions when 2 vans come with 1 parcel each from the same retailer when they are ordered at the same time. I thought we were trying to keep co2 emissions down.

We get a lot of electric vehicles delivering stuff. I don’t have the commitment to the debate to analyse the co2 savings taking these into account to be honest.
Personally, I think this country is merely tinkering round the edges, we can give up this, that and the other, but the overall infrastructure, will to change, and proper understanding of what it’s going to take to ensure future generations have a decent life is somewhat lacking in those that make the decisions. There is no long term view, it’s all about short term fudges.

Last Saturday an argument was put to me.  I neither agree nor disagree with it as I simply don’t know.

The gist was that the problem with the world is obvious – too many humans.  It was followed by the theory, or maybe suggestion, that the Chinese had tried to reduce their population by limiting families’ to just one child.  This hadn’t worked and they were now looking at the other end of the human spectrum.  SARS-COV-2 was the result of an experiment to engineer a virus to eliminate the older and weaker members of society substantially reducing the population.  Unfortunately an early version escaped the lab and we all know the result.  A conspiracy theory, rubbish, bad idea, good idea, workable solution to our planetary crisis, just plain BS?  I have no idea and not enough knowledge to express an opinion but it did make me wonder if the world problem is over population by humans.

On that score I wonder who invented the asteroid that hit when there were too many dinosaurs...we're all at the mercy of nature. wink

I see there is some resolution towards the lack of CO2 issue today. BBC LINK

You don’t need knowledge just logic & basic intelligence. It’s crap, totally & utterly. Some Humans on this planet can & do take life without a care but wholesale culling is not possible at the level the Chinese Govt would need nor would they be able to keep it quiet. I’m afraid this level of social media fodder should stay there👍🏻

That's a rather strange comment! I can't see anything, on either side of the debate that's half as contentious as some of your more "extreme" posts, F (apart from,  possibly, 1 word in Rocky's).

    Care to elaborate? undecided

To get back to the OP, if the 'generation of 02' means trapping and re-using, then that cannot be a bad idea surely?
