One thing that is for sure is-access to water during a day out is way more important than food. A lack of food has never slowed any dog of mine down but no access to water has. I’ve always carried a collapsible drinking bowl for water.

Dear lord man, get a grip!
im no great dog lover, but I’m tolerant of them and had precisely one dog, a belligerent dachshund, (aren't they all), bark at me repeatedly in a decade.

I simple made a joke of it, and told the dog, ‘oh hush now, You don’t mean that, that’s no way to speak to your neighbour’... all very non confrontational and the owner took the hint and kept the dog in when people were about. no dramas, no ongoing barking, everyone happy.

Just a general observation that might be better said on any thread that comes up about numbers of dogs on CAMC sites but as this one is open I thought I might post it here.

We have seen numerous posts about restricting numbers of dogs on sites or charging for them. The 2 are entirely different matters in my view.

During the last 18 months since Covid struck we have seen CLs and CAMC sites with more people on and invariably more dogs. Some people want to restrict dog numbers but our general observation is that there is NO right number.

Some recent examples might show why I think this way.

We were driven mad by the member with 7 dogs, which yelped and gnashed at every movement outside of their motorhome area, sited next to us at Yellowcraig last September but more recently the dog owner with 4 dogs (and a Parrot!) was wonderful on a CL. Not a single squeak (or squark) out of any of them yet the previous occupant of that CL pitch had one dog that barked at its own shadow and was allowed to continue for some time. So where do you draw the line and why would charging stop the bad behaviour whilst penalising those well behaved dogs?

So really there is no golden rule as far as I can see. No amount of charging will stop bad dog behaviour on site. Let sleeping dogs lie (pun definitely intended).

If you want to charge for dogs as it's an extra expense to cater for them on site borne by non dog owners then that's an entirely different subject matter but not one I'd support.

Good post, WN. It underlines the fact that a well trained dog is a joy. Sadly, some owners fall short.

Yes and you even asked a question at the AGM about it. Why does having more dogs on site affect your holiday in any way?

A variable rate for a dog, is it based on weight? size?

It is not the number of dogs but their behaviour that is important, as WH said.

We are currently outnumbered 4 to 2 by next doors extremely well behaved dogs but outnumbered the previous occupants mutt by 2 to 1 yet far prefer the current occupant.

Would charging per dog have helped us avoid the quarrelsome badly trained dog? Doubt it. Would the one with 4 dogs have gone elsewhere? Possibly so.

No right answer to charging as far as I'm concerned.

And yes, we felt distinctly odd not having a dog at Yellowcraig but as a dog lover it didn't bother me that much as it allowed me to enjoy other peoples well behaved mutts and hand them back. It might bother others though. I can certainly see how it would bother those members who have a problem with dogs and don't like them as a general rule.

I strongly suspect that members would still pay any reasonable price to have them on site rather than go elsewhere though.

Agreed. No amount of charging is going to make folk more responsible or train their dogs better.

There is a school of thought that suggests it could be counter productive as some people might feel that, having paid a fee, their dogs could be entitled to do what they liked with the blessing of the owners.

Charging owners €4-€5 (depending on weightwink) certainly does provide a deterrent to them bringing multiple dogs on to site...2 dogs costing €10 a day adds €70 a week to the owner , a not insignificant amount.

on sites ive used where charging like this in in place, the number of dogs on site is usually far lower than on club sites.

i have no reason to think that a similar policy on club sites wouldn't have a similar effect. However, one of the big draws to the CAMC is its policy on dogs and i dont see it being changed.

I would say not, people love their animals and will pay to have them with them on the site they want. What is 70 euros on the cost on having a MH, pet insurance, travel costs...

But you're trying to compare a European site to what would happen on UK club sites based on very little I would say.

As WH I don't think it would affect numbers on a UK club site.

Good point C, if you(me) want your Dog with you the cost is immaterial it’s not like buying a £80k moho & wanting to park in the middle of town for nowt👍🏻. Dogs are way more important-they’re family😊

I regularly observe some extremely well behaved dogs on sites. However, at the other end of the spectrum there is a growing number of folks who should be banned from owning them or bringing them on sites. They’re easily identified, they dress them in frilly outfits, carry them around like babies, push them around in prams or use them as toys for the amusement of their kids. There are also those, thankfully not often seem on sites, who use them to intimidate others. IME most of the problems experienced from persistent barking, fouling to attacks on cattle (and people) is associated  with these dog owner characteristics. It’s too late to change things, the horse has bolted, but hopefully dog ownership will eventually drift out of fashion.

It is not a surprise more dogs are seen on sites with the latest figures now showing since covid came to these shores,  dog ownership has risen with  more people working from home the recent figures show 1in7 homes now have at least one dog.

And the large increase in LV users looking for pitches to be able to use sites that do not have as some sites  "hidden"? charges above the headline price ,

It is a very Good selling point if dogs are not charged for

What happens is that the dog owners just visit other sites with a more relaxed policy. The club has so many dogs because of its relaxed policy.

High pricing doesnt make dog owners better or worse,  merely question if that is the type of site they want to visit.

lack of dogs on continental sites is down to pricing policy, why would it not have the same effect here?

dont have a clue what the parking in a town has to do with dogs on sites or why a dog is more important than parking?
seemed a very odd thing to write...

Well we have been to private sites in this country with dog limits and with rules about dogs. Last one we visited had few rules but said dogs welcome, on lead etc, provided they don’t bark at everything (I paraphrase) and if this isn’t appropriate for your dog please think about an alternate site.

Site was pretty much full, a few dogs, but NO constant yapping or dogs wandering.

one of the reasons we rarely visit Club sites is the amount of noise from dogs and them wandering onto our pitch. Club rules seem to be very rarely enforced.

We have rarely been bothered by dogs on site, maybe we were lucky. Only two incidents come to mind: arriving at Longleat to find no less than 5 ‘presents’ left behind on our pitch, we cleared them up but did later inform the warden. At another site we were pitched behind a barking spaniel, which didn’t bother us as much as the owner, she constantly loudly yelled shut up to the animal but did no more to stop it. Another time the gentle, very elderly Labrador from next door left their awning to say hello to us, his owners quickly followed with apologies, we said it was no bother and nice to see him, they were very caring owners. Also, just to say that all dogs that yap don’t have bad or uncaring owners, my Dad owned two long haired dashounds and they yapped constantly, it always bothered Dad that they might annoy people, he did everything he could think of to stop them, to no avail.

DEBSC, I've come to the conclusion that it's a rare Daschunds that doesn't yap or bark. They just do. We had someone in our close who had 2 of them. Both beautiful friendly little fellas but they did like to exercise their tonsils.laughing

I think most small dogs have a tendency to be vocal. Our terrier certainly did but not for long when we heard her. She always gave a last "Yap" though as if to have the last word. Take that as typical dog or typical female or both.😂

I have got to the stage with this thread now, that I virtually ignore it to be honest. Like M, I saw it as a conduit to share dog friendly examples of sites, share nice places to walk dogs, share dog friendly eateries, and if required, occasionally help out with a dog related problem. It’s probably in that vein that Rowena set up this thread, but it’s hijacked by too many rants about bad owners, and then the non dog owning fraternity want to tell all and sundry about how their holidays have been spoilt, how bad some dog owners are, what we should have to pay to take our pets away with us, etc, etc...

I’d be more than happy if it was split into two threads, one, Useful Information for Dog Owners, and a second thread where the ranters can just let rip, with the mods looking after it. I would only contribute to the first, the second thread would be of no interest to me. Haters are always going to hate, regardless of whatever polite answers are given.

But, back on thread.......Marazion Club Site is fantastic for dog owners. Great walks direct from the Site, numerous dog friendly beaches close by, and the pitches are grass, so comfy on paws and joints. Shady spots as well. A very nice location in the Far West of Cornwall.

I accept completely the point that not everyone loves dogs but what I can't understand is why folk who have a grievance with inconsiderate/irresponsible dog owners insist on continually posting their grievances on here instead of following the guidance given by Rowena. This is not the place to complain about other site users and, indeed, it is a pointless exercise to do so.

It’s called negative fixation I think. Instead of focussing on the positive aspects of something, let’s say a touring forum offering pleasant information exchange, some see a conduit for raising latent underlying dislikes, and derive a satisfaction from giving way to those dislikes when they can. Sadly for the more balanced contributors, it’s a bit like an addiction. Pleasure is derived from it, so it’s difficult to control, even when asked by someone in higher authority. So it spoils things for everyone.☹️

Anyway, back on thread. We had a pleasant surprise last couple of days, here in Cornwall. I was under the impression that most of the beaches that had partial dog bans, the ban ended on 30th September. But the couple that we visited, (without the pooch) ended on 31st August. So a bit more scope for doing a walk involving a beach then earlier in year.
