New guidance re overseas travel

Yep, that’s the reality. If you want to take advantage of all that technology can offer you need to keep up-to-date, nothing to do with fashion. Whether we’re talking camping apps with enough capacity to use off-line or the NHS COVID 19 App, old clunky phones are just a source of inconvenience and frustration waiting to happen.
If you’re using an old phone you’re also missing out on some superb pocket sized camera technology to treasure those memories of places visited, unless of course you still prefer the Kodak Brownie!

I think the Motorola G4 came out in 2016, (Margaret also had one) which admittedly is not that long ago but it probably has limited storage 16GB or 32GB if you are lucky? I had a lovely HTC One phone which did everything I needed it to do but I started to run into storage problems because it only had 16GB of memory. The only reason I moved to the Samsung A50 was because of storage as it has 128GB which is more than enough for the numerous Apps I have on my phone and plenty of room for more. I have always taken a laptop away with us in the van but increasingly I am relying on my phone for anything from online banking to bus timetable apps! The Samsung is now nearly two years old and there are no immediate plans to change it subject to it continuing to perform as expected.

I appreciate what's been said but I much prefer to use a laptop when travelling and a desktop computer at home as the screen size on even the best phone doesn't handle what I want. As for touch screen keypads - for those of us who can (more or less) touch type they're just painfully slow.
I can't imagine why 16GB wouldn't be enough storage as I always transfer any photos taken on my phone to the desktop anyway (but of course again prefer to use a proper digital camera for all sorts of reasons).
And of course if my whole life is on the phone and it breaks down, is lost or stolen......

Good article. In the context of a mobile phone, I wonder what ‘refurbished’ means? The term suggests some kind of strip down, testing and replacement of parts. However, that seems unlikely, given the likes of Apple who make it virtually impossible to perform even simple tasks like battery replacement. So, probably just marketing speak for ‘second hand’?

Hope this doesn’t deviate of topic to much but parts and tools for DIY repairs to Apple iphone and other smart phones with video instructions, replacing the battery is quite easy but this will depend how confident you are to try.
Google ifixit for info started by an American student who’s piece of equipment was deemed obsolete by Apple and he repaired it and set up Ifixit to enable others to do the same.

Its ok folks, we can all swan off to Spain as of Monday, dont worry re returning, just stay down there until it all cools off, July & August in a caravan could be a tad warm though
what a shambles, the EU are saying people from the UK are not welcome within their boundaries, but Spain, Portugal to name just 2, are saying something entirely different, something to do with wanting our money i suspect, maybe they all have their own BJ, no not maybe they have, surprised Monsieur Michel Barnie has not put his oar in
I wonder what would happen if you caught the ferry to France and tried to motor down to Spain & beyond

Wouldn’t be surprised to see some Govt back peddling about travel abroad timeframe some time soon. There seems to be a growing tide of opinion from some ‘experts’ and politicians that it’s too soon and risky given the threat posed by B.1.617.2 variant. Criticism about delay in responding to inbound travel threat from India is fuelling a perception that Govt have got it wrong again. I think there are a few more ‘bumps in the road’ yet before travel opens up.

Just sorted ours out. I’ve had the app for ages but never saw a use for it as I use system online for sorting my repeat prescription. I generated the Pdf copy and saved it to iBooks on our phones. However, OH noticed it said the QR code was only valid until the 20th June (4 weeks). So I guess we will have to generate another one before we hopefully go. At least I know how to do it now.😀
Also noticed we have been banned from Germany ( except in exceptional circumstances) wether or not we have a vaccine passport / negative test.

‘Exceptional circumstances’ that’ll be if you want to spend a super amount of money, Covid don’t bother rich folk😂😂

Talk of the NHS App is a bit premature in Wales as the facility for obtaining a certificate from said App is not yet online. If we needed to go abroad we would have to ring an emergency number to obtain such certificate.
Unless there is a family crisis in France it won't worry me this year so they can sort the gremlins out in time for next year please.

Yes it’s a bit odd. It’s the same NHS but there doesn’t seem to be any link with England. When OH ended up in Abergavenny hospital, when we were away a few years ago, they had no way of getting hold of her records. She was in for a week and they still hadn’t sourced them when discharged.

There must be something about Wales!!! Margaret also ended up in A&E at Abergavenny when we were staying at the Brecon site. Because we had the motorhome we had to get a taxi back at 3.00am in the morning!!! I was only by luck that we managed to find a taxi as they don't seem very geared up for a 24/7 service!!! Also agree about the lack of joined up systems, that happens even between MK and Bedford which is only 15 miles apart and I think in the same grouping of hospital trusts!!! Perhaps what the NHS App needs to have is results of recent blood tests as that could help?

It's the same in Scotland, we don't have the same access as England.
We can however go onto a website and download a copy of a certificate of vaccination.
The thing that is really annoying Scots just now is we only have one place we are allowed to use to get a test done prior to travel and again on return. This is set up by the SG and very expensive.
Thankfully we are not due to travel until September (carried over from 2020) so hoping its all sorted by then.

It was a fairly simple process to generate it, I assume you just repeat the exercise to get a new one.
It’s only my speculation, but I would guess the limited shelf life is in case a new variant appears that would not be covered by our AZ vaccine doses and a booster was required. Presumably in that case you wouldn’t be able to get a new passport until you had one.0 -
50% is optimistic, and that is only first dose, my daughter who is on priority list being a teacher has been told unlikely she will get second dose inside the 12 week limit, and they now have the Indian variant, may make a trip to holiday cottage later in year but caravan stays in the UK, too hot in Spain July & August to be in caravan without aircon, and site already booked for month of Sept in the UK

Yes, slow progress.
I’ve been in Gibraltar for a couple of days now and have chatted to some of locals crossing the border daily for work. Quite a lot of dissatisfaction with arrangements in Spain and little confidence in the system.

I think that may be very optimistic, this is what my daughter sent today
"The latest pandemic update published by the regional health authorities of Murcia on Wednesday 26th May reports no new Covid-related fatalities but another 81 confirmed cases, with the number of known active cases rising to 795, its highest level since 19th March. "
"People with at least one vaccine dose: 455,195 (30.2% of the population)
People fully vaccinated: 239,287 (15.9%)"
and it is reported that Spain is delaying giving second vaccinations in an attempt to up the number of people having 1st vaccination.
People who run businesses that rely are tourism are pushing for relaxation of the rules, hence let the Brits in, but others are not so sure. There is a big concern as to what will happen towards the end of June when the Spanish summer holiday starts.
It does seem the Spanish are gambling on Brits not being infectious because most will have had 2 doses of the vaccine, when countries such as France, Germany and now Austria(banned all UK flights) are imposing tougher restrictions.
