UK staycation boom predicted

That had me chuckling😁 We have a St Piran’s cross on our vehicles, our old campervan (Suntor conversion) had Devon plates.

Yes, visitor cars can be spotted a mile off, roof boxes are definitely one, lack of local ‘WK’ or ‘WL’ plate is another one and folks who drive fancy cars, especially big ones. Your average local doesn’t drive the type of car necessary to keep up with the neighbours in Guildford. Put it all together and you’ve got a visitor.
When they get out of their big 4x4 they’re equally obvious, just something about clothes and demeanour that stands out. Hesitancy to initiate a friendly acknowledgment with a complete stranger also gives them away.

What you mean not chewing on a straw stem
They do not come from our area then ,as most of us will talk to anyone
Depending if you are an "Old boy ,liddle old boy ,or Old girl or liddle old girl"😍
Further east its "how you today my lovely"

They were converted in Devon. I think it might have been the origin of Devon Conversions.

Since his op last year OH can't manage to walk that far. We don't do beaches in the summer so that isn't the problem, it's the roads, the supermarkets, the local pubs/restaurants, our infrastructure just isn't up to it. Also the idiots who drive on our country lanes like they are motorways, but when they have to reverse aren't up to it! No I just meant that crowded camp sites and busy places would not be my idea of relaxation.

As you can see from this recent photograph of me, stereotypes aren’t always accurate!

Yes agree. There are good reasons some folks can’t walk very far, but others simply won’t be bothered. Our difficulty comes in the shape of an elderly pooch, but he has a chariot to get around in, quite good on off road tracks, and he’s still able to potter around, so we don’t have to shove 8st uphill all the time! 😂
We have a trip to SW planned this year, based around an event cancelled from last year. Fully expecting it to be well outside our normal comfort zone, but we shall just get on with it. We have a few bolt hole locations planned, some treasured and hopefully not too discoverable.

Actually an A60 Morris Suntor. It was our only car first couple of years of being together, so holiday accommodation and every day vehicle. I learned to drive in it. We did thousands of miles in it, it got down even the tiniest lanes (think a wide arm span) in Cornwall, with care. Wish we had it now, would be great as a day van, occasional overnighter, but our old bones aren’t up to prolonged usage any more.

We would have liked to have fitted a bit of North East Cornwall into a trip later in the year as we might head along the coast, eastwards taking in Devon and Dorset in order to call in to see family in Christchurch but we have decided that it'll have to wait until things cool down a tad and all of those staycationers head back abroad and leave a little bit of room, and I speak as one of those who likes to head abroad occasionally.
It's quite a while since we were last in Cornwall and it's a shame to miss out on places just because others have the same idea but there is a limit.
I can see us taking in some of Wiltshire and Somerset on the way to Dorset but they're only plans at the moment.

Great vehicles for their time , it may have been a Morris 1961or.62 I think? I did my driving lessons and test in a Triumph Herald still have my red original licence in with my photo licence case,,has in the past raised eyebrows if asked for identification
Whoops thread drift , but then as others🤷♀️

Used to be specific to Truro, but can’t say I’ve seen it in recent times.

Interesting comments about size of older cars. No wonder some folks struggle with latest models and narrow lanes!

You'll hav to be quick with Somerset, we are being invaded by the "London" set, mind you they're sticking together in the same area at present, safety in numbers. Not so many come to our bit, too many sheep, too much mud and no artisan bakers....

AF was one of the Cornish regs back in olden times. It was issued by the Truro taxation office for Cornwall County. Also CV, RL and something else I've forgotten. A local office existed in Plymouth (CO, DR, JY) as well but closed. Now only Exeter and Truro remain with Bristol being the next up the line.

It’s becoming trendy, celebrity life style programmes like Sarah Beeny’s won’t help.
Having spent a few million on a farm complete with faux mansion, she’s just discovered that honey comes from bees and proper cider is delicious!

Bit later than that, they switched to using Morris Marina vans as base vehicles I think. Ours was around 1973 I think, we got it in 1982.
This is same as ours. At the time ours was still in use, OH seemed to think there were only around 16 still on the road as campers. We actually met up/saw another four like ours, still in great condition. Still have the old cooker from it, a brilliant camping stove. They go for a lot of money now, quite rare.

JVB66 I think we may be heading your way, well Watford, to our son's, when we can. Hope to visit Harry Potter world, we had to cancel last year. Our regular visit to Windsor. Lots of National Trust places. Walks by the Thames and time with our grandchildren. Along with visits to our static van on its quiet site and trips out to the Cotswolds I hope we are sorted. My cousin and I have been planning a week in Yorkshire but not sure this will be the year as suspect it will be busy there like Devon.

A cockerel helps as well brue😁 And loud church bells.
Somerset Levels could well be our route homewards this time. We went across Exmoor last SW tour.

Thanks. Yes, I knew it was Truro and used to spot plates with the AF reg.
I think the SW will have to brace itself for a huge wave of holidaymakers, us included but we hope to slink off for some quiet coastal walks and inland spots.

Just finished watching the First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, outlining the next 3 weeks worth of restrictions.
The same as usual except for some movement on primary schools opening for some pupils in a couple of weeks time and a bit of leeway for meeting outdoors with up to 4 people.
Looks like holiday accommodation won't be opening before Easter at the earliest.

Talking of quiet spots.....The Mendips never seem overrun even in high season. I lived in North Somerset for many years and know that area quite well. I like Priddy. It’s situated in a great location for walking and some very decent pubs - they don’t get more rustic than the Hunters Lodge! CCC site within walking distance of Priddy.
Burrington Combe is a great alternative to Cheddar Gorge but without the tourists, tacky shops and boy racers.
Chew Valley & Blagdon Lakes have much to offer for walkers, nature lovers and who can resist visiting a place called ‘Nempnett Thrudwell’?
