Servicing calls at CLs for Motorcaravans

But I suspect, admittedly with no evidence, that the majority of folk would want to use the facility either early in the morning or in the evening. It's certainly what I would do in that position, no point breaking into the middle of a day out walking/touring to do this. In which case it wouldn't be folk out during the day who were affected.

I see no reason for CMC to promote it. is the answer.
I did not think that I had said quite that about tie on site. If the temperatures are hitting 30c I am likely to return around 3pm to seek shade depending on where I have been and in such conditions I am likely to have the odd chill out day- probably one in ten. However regardless of that I will reinforce my first sentence.

It won’t come via this Club, at least not until Motorhomes vastly outnumber caravans, and the Membership is more new to touring, rather than switching from a caravan to a motorhome.
Many stay for a shorter time on a site. I stay 5 nights to see the area. I often see others doing similar.

Yes I know you do, as do lots of others, and indeed ourselves. But we also do one and two night stops, and whilst the Club doesn’t penalise us in any way for this, it does charge us, at times and at certain locations, a substantial amount of money for a single 14 hour park up. Hurn Lane cost us £30 for arriving at nearly 8pm, off again at 10am, and a dog walk unfit for a tiny chihuahua let alone a Labrador in terms of size and space. It remains my single most badly planned one night stop of the last 30 years. Even the Warden (very nice) apologised at the price! Our chosen stop over had an event on close by, and we got caught out, just in case anyone is wondering.......
Five nights in one place is a long time if we are touring. You are a caravanner, you visit things like a Hobbit, there and back again to your pitched up bed, until you move on. We go look at something, might be 30 miles away, so we find somewhere on the route, as our bed goes with us. We like our van for long stopovers, but the MH tends to tour. Slightly different.

With reference to your second paragraph...
If 50 hired vans were passing my door on the NC 500 every day, some UK first timers and others overseas visitors , it would strike me that running a CL just for 5 CMC members was a bit of a loser.
It needs someone with more of a business brain.

That’s possibly why there aren’t that many CLs up there EuroT👍Interestingly, there don’t appear to be many Britstop opportunities either.
It’s a strange one really. Fabulous marketing has seen an unbelievable surge in folks desperate to do the route, but it doesn’t appear that the current infrastructure can cope. To me, it’s very appeal was in its unspoilt remoteness, the fact that you could travel all day, and hardly see a soul. That’s what my Sister said it was liked when she lived in Lairg. Doubt it’s like that now.0 -

I am not sure that your comparison with Hobbits stands up too well. It is over 45 years since I read Tolkien's trilogy. From my memory The Hobbits were generally unlike Bilbo and Sam and rarely left The Shire. Bilbo and Sam seemed to travel very much rather than staying in one spot after leaving home. It is a while ago though.
It is rare that we would travel 30 miles and return. Generally on daily trips 20 miles would be tops to a destination and usually less, therefore, most days. Usually we would make circular trips to visit 2, or occasionally 3 locations.
CMC sites are expensive if you do not require the daily facilities, but it does not concern us. We don't need the washroom, toilet or showers but we pay for them on many sites.

Hobbit reference is “There and Back Again....” Bilbo’s book about his adventures. It was actually the original title of Tolkien’s Hobbit.
It’s just the way I think about how we use our caravan......every day, there and back again (off to see somewhere nice, then back to caravan), sorry if I confused😁
It’s linear touring with the MH......or “The Road Goes Ever On....” (Tolkien’s poem) not retracing our steps each day.
We love both ways of spending time.

We are same now AD. We used to overnight (midnight to 6am) in places like big ox bow lay bys, hidden park up spots, or in service station lorry parks, but those days are long gone now. The lay bys are sadly disgustingly dirty, full of bad pot holes, and Mr 40 tonne HGV is a lot more worrying nowadays. The service stations were never that good, and now charge an arm and a leg, and every park like pull in has a barrier of some sort. So we look for proper overnight spots nowadays, usually a CL.

If you are having a couple of stopovers on route there is ample facility on board.
If you choose to continually stay were there are no such facilities when on holiday that is for you to sort in UK. I had no problem doing so. I simply chose a site with facilities when needed or used a public toilet to empty waste and a highway grid for any waste water. Collecting water as needed.

Wonder why they don't call it by the name given to it by national park wardens when they have to clean up the mess left..... "Dirty Camping"
3 -
Maybe they should charge more for public toilets as they would most likely block up or be in a disgusting state after somebody emptied 2or3 days worth in one go and we all know how much it splashes

You’d have to find a public toilet that is open, beyond those in shops. Rare as hen’s teeth at the moment. Not that I would try it anyway...🤢

Never had a problem with my toilet splashing when it was in use whilst I refitted the bathroom and toilet. Just press the vacuum release button before you start. There is nothing in the cassette to cause blockage when I empty mine, just liquid.
When I did 'wild camp' for the few weeks in Scotland I had a two part toilet that was far easier. I think that I had only twice had to use a public toilet though in a couple of parks as I normally stayed fishing for 4 or 5 nights and then used a site to shower, trim my beard and a little hand washing.
I agree that at present finding a toilet might be difficult at the present but have no idea. Hardly been out for 11 months other than shopping

At the risk of bringing the wrath of the provisional wing of the Kennel Club upon me, the same could be said of dog walks. CAMC are quite happy to provide a facility that is not directly related to LV ownership for a section of the membership yet is unwilling to provide a facility that IS directly related to LV ownership.

I thought we'd done well so far without someone mentioning the D word and I don't use the swings and slides either....
The idea about providing extra services to none site users funded by the club has been talked about before and the official line from the club was they din't want to encourage the unregulated H&S practices of "wild" campers.

Scarborough south side toilets went the same way & had to be closed for a season awaiting repairs🙁.
last time I was there they were open & working-that was in 2020.

A survey last year in which 9000 owners responded indicated 96 percent of owners were willing to pay £10 per night just to park overnight and would pay more if there were motorhome services available as well. I think there are very very few who expect to pay nothing and of the 4 percent who wouldn't pay £10, considering it to be too expensive, they would probably be willing to pay something.
I reviewed the survey this morning while the site was down and I note I need to correct the above. My memory wasn't quite correct, for the sake of accuracy the figure of £10 was acceptable to 96 percent for the provision of services (no EHU) and parking as apposed to just parking.

Directly related to the LV community that use sites that don't provide the very facilities that they apparently require. If they do not wish to use a regulated site they should consider their options. One obvious one is to use a regulated site. If they don't wish to do that then I see no reason for a club site to make provision -Whether a member or not.
There are a number of RV users that regularly weekend on car parks etc. In normal times I suspect that many would have little problem managing waste for weekend.
Eventually there may be some providers that see a business opportunity in providing facilities. Not seen many yet.

Looking around some popular car parks in Whitby 24 hours parking is £10 without dump stations although daytime toilets on site (normally). I suspect that for many possible providers they would want around £10 just to dump - no parking up. £10 a night for pitch and dump provisions in such an area is unlikely to happen I suspect. I suspect the same in many popular areas
1 -
I would think a prime time wild campers would want access is fairly early on, when they move on from where ever they have managed to park up. This would directly conflict with those who had stopped on site and are leaving. In most cases all we or they are dumping is grey water, which takes very little time. Where as the wild camper will also be filling with water and emptying their cassette, which is going to take somewhat longer. As when busy it is already necessary to queue, I am firmly against opening it up to those not stopping the night.

I suspect if the Club ever did consider something, it might be an amenity on the edge of a Site, so that those wanting to use it weren’t detained unnecessarily by the overwhelming welcome and friendship shown by Members staying🤣

I think all cc sites where possible, are being modified to cater for the use of motor caravans in the majority
The next "moan?from motor caravaners will be wanting several more large emptying/filling points on club site to save as we have seen ,the queues of vehicles waiting for their turn to dance on the service points (even the later big ones) trying to line up the usually inadequately positioned waste oulets ,

Yup, just one big happy family😂😂
