Good advice certainly but sadly my watch has a built in battery and I just use that, The eTrex is hardly ever used but still carried.

If you read the mountain rescue reports and advice you'll see that it's not about having enough power for your planned walk but having enough if anything happens and you end up benighted or stuck. In fact the advice is to switch off your phone, or someone's phone, to keep as a reserve as most will be taking pics, using their map functions... which uses up more power. As I said when you may really really need it it will be dark, cold (further affect battery power), foggy and then if you've used up all your battery during the day?
Read some reports and you'll see how people have been caught out.
Daughters is complaining how her apple phone seems to re-charging every 9 hours.
Off topic a bit but the point is that there is a place for paper and digital and no one should be forced into using just one, or labelled as quaint?

I was about to request the latest price list and am concerned to discover that there isn't one, if indeed that is the case.
A lack of pricing makes the handbook pretty useless as far as club sites are concerned.

Each to their own - as someone once said. I got my Handbook last week and read through it. One gem I spotted that I had not known about before is that there is a rule against setting up a hot tub on site.

He is in his 80's Brian. By his own admission he doesn't think he will have many more years towing a caravan around Britain.
He is very put out by the clubs attitude that if you don't 'do' smart phones and internet then its 'tough'.
The other club could gain a new member.

I'm sure that if he could be 'steered' towards the advantages of the web he'd see how he'd be able to use it. My Dad is 84 this year & uses the web pretty well ... he's had a mobile phone since the days of full sized SIM cards, not quite as early as the original bricks but not far off.

18 months because the poster said they kept the previous version in the car which means that it is 12 months out of date and the prep time and publishing deadline will push that back another 6 months so the version they haveto hand is at least 12 months out of date.

I really cannot understand why people are having a go at other members who still like a paper product.
It's like insisting that cash should be banished overnight and only cards used for buying stuff. There's room for both at this moment in time. As us old dinosaurs become extinct so paperless books, directories, cash, maps, passports, newspapers, leaflets, libraries, pamphlets etc will be consigned to museums but until then just put us in a little corner and let us get on with our reading.
Some of us actually enjoy having a book or map in our hands.

But the new one has just come out?

No I'm not I leave that to ex PO's
Actually why would an OS map and compass be of more use? Are you an experienced fell walker ED?
I have both (GPS and maps) both are as much use as the other and I described upthread I use one for navigation largely on the move and the map comes out when having lunch. But either could fail hence the need for both at all times.

David, I see your point but a PDF is not the way forward.
The club needs to stop reproducing copies of the 1960s brochure in digital format and have serious digital strategy.
We need a HTML based system with good sharp information. It should be interactive, with intelligent search strings. The club can do its own and affiliate sites and the CLs can do theirs and maintain them. This is cost effective, has much more information and can be kept in real time.
It could even have a reservation system built in showing availability.
If it was written properly it could be something similar to Archies in terms of downloads so you can use remotely. In terms of content I personally like ASCI Eurocampings, Zoover for the GUI, and pitchup for search strings and preferences.
Once they have the data they can produce a decent booking website as well.
If we had this then we would not need stickies on these boards for things like "club sites with fully serviced pitches", "Monthly open and closed CL lists", "non EHU sites list" and the other similar threads which should and could be in the page content of a site and part of an intelligent search string.

Yes, so the previous contributor now puts last years in the car as backup. So this is 12 months old. Assuming that it takes at least 6 months from data freeze to you getting the printed matter through your door then the data in his car is 18 months old.

The club needs...
We need a HTML...
Firstly who is we? I assume you might mean you, but why are you thinking WE need anything?
Secondly why does the club need any of that? Is the present system working against the club? Why should the club spend money on your system? What benefits would it bring? More bookings? People complain enough about not being able to get a pitch. Personally I think people are more concerned with actual club sites and their quality rather than websites.
CLs can do theirs and maintain them.
Do you really know what a CL is and how they operate?
It could even have a reservation system built in showing availability.
doesn't the club have that already?
But to be fair could you link some websites from the larger campsites that have your system in place so that we can compare?

POMEA if you please
... Are you an experienced fell walker ED?
It's been many many moons since I last had to triangulate a position on the ground but again ... you're digressing & a moderator will moderate

We, all members of the club for the benefit of the club.
The club needs it because it is the way the current world is. Many many market dominant British institutions that were very established and thought that digital media was a fad are sadly no longer in existence.
So you are happy for the club to spend huge amounts on the handbook and a staff to maintain it, and the distribution costs, but you are opposed to a cheaper digital offering with better features and of more use to members.
The new handbooks have arrived, thats about a hundred tonne of plastic waste in the bin then.
People dont complain about getting a pitch, they moan about the farce that pretends to be a booking system. Most usually get what they want after spending hours trying to book and then phoning the sites repeatedly to get a booking.
Yes I do know what a CL is I use them. Quite often they have excellent digital media and online presence as being rural businesses they understand the benefit of being able to promote their little rural business to the whole world for little cost.
I listed the organizations that I think are class leading in the previous post, google the names.

I stand corrected ED apologies

What a load of poppycock. Certain members, a few I would guess, do moan when they can't get the site they want for the period they want, but they are in the vast majority. The system works well if one can be bother to use it properly.

How can you be so sure that all the members want this, the we you talk about? Can you name such companies that failed bacuse of it's booking system?

I would imagine that designing and implementing a new website/booking system/app would cost far more than simply getting printer to print stuff off. Certainly was at work. Printing was cheap. IT structures/websites were expensive
People dont complain about getting a pitch,
Yes they do, shall I reprint your complaints about weekend bookings spoiling your longer stay?
Yes I do know what a CL is I use them. Quite often they have excellent digital media and online presence as being rural businesses they understand the benefit of being able to promote their little rural business to the whole world for little cost.
Could you post one CL that has this fantastic digital media presence?
I listed the organizations that I think are class leading in the previous post, google the names
I have looked and really no different to the club's.

I never said all members want it, I said it is needed by many in the club. I know that a fair number do not want change or progress dependent on your view.
Can I name major companies that failed due to having poor or no digital content, yes, many, many, of them. If you had any understanding of commerce you would know how poor that question is.
Yes, printing is cheap, that is why virtually all commercial media publications are moving or have moved to a digital platform. You had better tell them they are wrong.
I could post many that have very good digital presence, why you want to believe that rural businesses are not using digital media to promote their products.
You then try to tell me that there is no difference in the offerings of the Club digital media and some of the examples I suggested. Do you have the internet or are you making this up?

Thank JVB, it should of course read minority. That'll teach me to read my posts through thoroughly before posting them.
