no difference in reality in my view

excuse - release (someone) from a duty or requirement.

And in the government guidelines the word excuse is used:

There are some places where you must wear a face covering by law, unless you are exempt or have a reasonable excuse

In the vast majority of locations there are a number of alternative stores which they could use.

You may suggest that a store may lose customers with this stance but I believe they would gain more than they lose. We rarely shop in a store these days but, on the odd occasion we do, we invariably see non wearers. I believe the health of the majority of law abiding shoppers is more important than the rights of the minority of non wearers even if a percentage of those non wearers has a genuine reason. No wonder the cases of Covid are so high when this flagrant breach of safety advice is  likely to be throughout the country.

We have had one home delivery of food, and 2 click and collect, all before summer.  The only shop we could get slots with was Waitrose.  The spend required there, for both delivery and click and collect, and their rather higher prices, means that we only shop there very occasionally even in normal times.

As there are only the 2 of us to cater for, we also found it difficult to deal with so much food at one time, and OH much prefers to choose her own items, so we  shop once a week at one of our local supermarkets, the closest of which is Tesco, and any top ups of things like milk we get at the small Lidl store close to our home.

    KJ

As pointed out by Brue the minimum spend at Waitrose is now only £40 which I would have thought most people could manage as a weekly spend, or even fortnightly. I just wish we could get down to double that figure each weekwink The previous £60 minimum spend was dictated by Ocado but now they are free of that restriction. Given your age, personally I would not want to be going to supermarkets in person in current conditions and if it meant spending a few more pennies on food I would have thought that a worthwhile investment? Doesn't have to be Waitrose but anywhere you can get a delivery would be better than going in person. JVB mentioned Iceland, I think they have an even lower minimum spend and they cover most of the basics. The less contact you have with the outside world the better, at least until you have been vaccinated.

Do these alternative stores not generally also require a mask?

Sorry that does not make sense, you posted

No Mask, No Entry, No Excuses, Go elsewhere

So if all shops said that, where are these alternative stores? And you didn't say only certain shops would have this sign?

    You may suggest...

I would suggest not anything like that. The only point is that there are valid medical excuses, reasons, exemptions that permit people not to wear a mask. People need to shop and saying some can't based that they have medical reason is plain wrong, my only 'suggestion' is let them.

I believe the health of the majority of law abiding shoppers is more important than the rights of the minority of non wearers even if a percentage of those non wearers has a genuine reason.

Are you saying here that you would not allow someone with a genuine reason to shop? Really?

If there is a medical or other genuine reason/excuse then they are allowed. That is the end of it really.

You are right it doesn't matter about us it is what is in the guidelines and rules that matter ET:

There are some places where you must wear a face covering by law, unless you are exempt or have a reasonable excuse

Yes of course they should/will but those shops may accept law breakers, it doesn't mean that all shops should do. If Asda said no one allowed without masks I cannot see their sales going down but will more likely increase. How  Tesco /Lidl respond is up to them.

An alternative idea may be that  shops could advertise  that those unable to wear masks only accepted  between 8.00 - 9,00am and the same pm.

Once again Boris has come up with a rule that only the law abiding and those who are unable to wear a mask will follow whilst the law breakers will carry on with impunity. He should have insisted that all who have a genuine reason for no wearing should get a doctors note. Our doctors ( which is adjacent to the chemist ) is probably running at 10% business so no reason why a certificate could not be issued.

you really would stop those with genuine medical reasons not to wear a mask not to shop then? Sales might not go down but those affected people people suffer?

Again it is not against the law if you are exempt.

And to force such people to only shop at one time?

If all stores advised no mask no entry unless Valid evidential reason (snowimilar to  bus passes with a photo) I can see the hand wringingundecidedid cards seemed to work in ww2 and this situation is as bad (still got mine)       ,i would expect a much bigger uptake of compliance with what is ordered by HMG and a safer enviroment for others ,

Where did you get that idea from?

I wouldn't even stop mask wearers from shopping between those times but at least they would know that non mask wearers are likely to be seen.

I have to say that on my rare trips to our local Sainsburys I now see very few folk not wearing masks. I'm  more concerned, to be honest, about the large number of couples and family groups in store. However, I can't see any merit in expecting store staff to enforce the rules in either case. The current lockdown rules are so loosely drawn that there are all sorts of ways in which folk will try to circumvent them. What is needed surely is a much clearer and stricter lockdown in the first place.

Iceland on line free delivery is £35 and they stock most that we need, and as oft said by nutritionists frozen veg is just as good if not most times better than fresh,

We would not order fresh veg or fruit on line as we have seen the pickers just get what is on your list , but not the condition yourself would choose,?

We maybe located better than many as we have a Co oP that we can see from our back bedroom window for any fresh fruit (we can see open country from our front bedrooms)wink

Around me I see those not wearing a mask use a face shield. If they feel not able to wear a mask but using a face shield I am fine.

Why would anybody carry a cumbersome face shield rather than a mask which easily slips in the pocket?

There could well be a number of reasons why some wear face shields rather than masks, ET. I have one at present as I have stitches in my nose and the mask catches on them and is painful. Others will be averse to something covering their nose and mouth, so a shield is ideal for them. We don't know what some suffer from and why they can't/won't wear a mask.

My point Nellie. If somebody chooses not to wear a mask and wears a shield there is probably a good reason.

The lady on our card stall took to wearing a full clear face shield as she said she couldn't breathe and talk with the nose and mouth mask! So adapted - sensible.

My reflexologist is also a foot care person since upping her qualifications dealing with lots of vunerable oldies. She found a half sheild that allowed those who lip read as well as listened 😉  helpful. That way it didn't interfere with her vision and glasses. She is very conscious of health risks, wasn't allowed to do foot care in first lockdown but their governing body agreed with government to do the severe cases to relieve NHS of possible issues caused by lack of treatment, and tested this mask wearing to the nth degree, even trying to blow out candles 😂 to see it was as safe as possible.

I think most folk do their best to stay safe and not infect others if they should have it without knowing.

I'm certainly hearing of more folk with it locally.
