I'm not saying it doesn't happen, Freddy, but my meaning is that it doesn’t feature in every local news bulletin or every newspaper and someone would have to drill down deep to come up with so many references as we're treated to here.

Our local infant/ junior school closed on Thursday until the New Year because of increasing numbers of pupils having the virus. A couple of the classes have not been in for well over a week prior to the closure.

Recently received this email from Man City
”City confirms its plans to welcome supporters back to the Etihad Stadium, subject to the UK Government’s announcement on tiering next week.
Should Greater Manchester (or Manchester) move to Tier 2, 2,000 supporters will be able to attend the Newcastle United home Premier League match on Saturday 26th December.”COVID Madness, indeed. 😱

I can't see that making a whole lot of difference after the free for all for many that's going to occur over the Xmas holiday period

This whole drive to ease restrictions is getting ridiculous IMHO. Of course the government isn't going to "follow the science" and rescind on its short sighted decision to allow a Christmas "free for all". And now thousands of fans (including away ones who will be travelling between areas)are allowed into sports stadiums where they will fail to socially distance, whatever arrival and departure arrangements are proposed and can anyone believe they will refrain from cheering and singing?
I'm a big football fan myself but nothing would induce me to take part in such lunacy.
I sincerely hope I'm proved wrong (along with the scientists) but as for another spike in the New Year - anyone remember Basil Fawlty's suggestion for Sybil's Mastermind specialist subject?

I wonder why away fans will travel to matches as there certainly won't be allowed in the grounds, as tickets are only being allocated to season ticket holder by ballot. I do agree that can be very little control on the shouting and singing however.

Hope you’re right, NTH.
But just think that people having met up with family and friends over Christmas Eve and Day, might just have a “traditional “ few drinks before the Boxing Day football match, mix with 2,000 others, then continue socialising with other friends / family after the game.Just going to make things even worse, for no reason.
Anyway, as a Mancunian living in rural Lancashire, I won’t be allowed to apply for tickets for the match. We’re in tier 3, and if there was a tier 30, we’d be in it. 😱

The only madness in all this is even considering mixing either in a bubble or any other words for
"groups". After doing things right for 9 months and with a vaccine in say another 2 months it is stupid to take any risk. After all Christmas is now only a commercial con.

It’s a shame things are so bad in Wales, Fish, but you’re not forced to join in any Christmas celebrations.
I'll not deny there is a large degree of commercialism about Christmas but there is still the religious element which means a lot to some folk.

It’s a joyous time to some folk both young & old. This is the first time for ever I’m not going to spend it with my wider family over the 2 days. For children Christmas is a joy, that in turn gives me joy. I believe in the concept of Christmas. This year it’s not happening but it will return both bigger & better. Fish-Christmas is what you make it👍🏻

Hardly surprising looking at the figures, no point putting it off. What was interesting was that, as far as I can make out, Hertfordshire and Essex have been split into smaller areas rather than being treated as a whole. Maybe a sign of what to expect later in the week?
Noticeable that our esteemed Health Secretary had no answer to the request to revisit the ludicrous Christmas "free for all" decision.

I imagine that lots of folks, like myself, won’t be taking advantage of the temporary relaxation of the the rules. Conversely, some will see it as an opportunity to ‘go mad’. As CS said, one just has to look after oneself. Christmas a con? It’s only a con if you’re not aware of it.

Just listen to the medical and scientific evidence over the last few days ( and longer). The common theme is relaxation at Xmas will be catastrophic in January. We have a collective responsibility in all this. Add in the new strain now detected in Southern England and we see doomsday approaching. How many avoidable deaths will there be for our fixation with this mainly commercial con. Xmas not about meeting, drinking and feasting

‘Doomsday’ sounds a little dramatic, at this stage there is no suggestion that the new strain is more severe or resistant to vaccines, but it’s a worry and all viruses can and do mutate. However, I agree entirely about Christmas. Ignoring it for a year might be inconvenient for some, but they’d get over it. I’ve never been a Christmas fan. If those who believe in the spiritual aspects want to celebrate, then fine, but mostly it’s an orgy of over indulgence.

Well it is a celebration and that includes in normal times families, friends, feasting and drinking together as part of it (religious or not) and it is too firmly established in our culture and lifestyle (religious or not) to be put aside so easily. It is more than a fixation I would say.
But as others have said, one doesn't have to join in?
