Our local rates have started to climb these last couple of weeks since the UNI students have been tested before going homesurprised

Is it because of the increase in testing at the UNI?

JVB it seems this central belt of East of England is on the up while Tier 3 cases are declining. Don't think it will be too long before we are moved into TIer 3. 16th is the next assessment day.

I wonder what the UK would look like now if, as many had wanted, we had left the coronavirus to its own devices and just let it run rampant throughout the land, in terms of number dead, total number of cases, long term sufferers of covid19, state of hospitals, food supplies,....the list goes on.

roll on my vacination day cool

We had an Airedale who was stung in the mouth by a bee, she went into anaphylactic shock. Whisked off to vets, one quick injection, 30 seconds later the mischievous little pest was fully restored and up searching for more mischief😱

The Alsatian that I had used to love going into the front garden and snapping up and eating bees on a large lavender bush in summer. As far as I am aware she only ever got stung once ..... not that it put her off.

Things that buzz and twirl past are fascinating to a lot of dogs, just our band luck to have one that had such a bad reaction.

Anyone still thinking the Christmas "free for all" is a good idea would do well to read this article -

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/11/scientists-warn-against-christmas-gatherings-uk-despite-relaxed-rules-covid

With a vaccine now becoming available, surely it's not too much to ask that folk hold off family gatherings for the long term benefit of us all?

Certainly in wales we have been advised not to get together pointless when they (The Welsh Government) have 'promoted' such activity

Totally agree M. We watched Channel 4 news a couple of nights ago, South Wales is a disaster waiting to happen, interviews with hospital consultants, nurses, pleading with folks to be careful. The next stage for them is to triage for Covid beds.........

I know you have suffered a personal loss, and we came super close to losing a much loved friend in similar circumstances. He hadn’t been out for months, fully shielded, except for life saving routine hospital visits, but after eight months of being so careful, he caught it in hospital. He cannot believe he has survived after five weeks in ICU.

It was hinted on the news tonight that Wales are considering whether they should cancel the "Christmas Free Period" and set the whole of the Principality at level 3/4 from next week till after the New Year.

"Wales' Health Minister Vaughan Gething said changes would cause "huge issues about trust", but could happen if case rates stayed high."

Talking to various people in the village, Nellie, most have already made their Christmas plans and nearly all of them have opted to play as safe as they possibly can. Obviously some won't comply but the figures in Wales aren't going down.

It certainly doesn't look promising and family gatherings over the holiday period will only exacerbate the situation.

IMO it depends on the circumstances and it is very difficult looking in to determine the exact circumstances, e.g. the parts of our family we will be meeting up with on Christmas day & boxing day have all had Covid-19 within the last 2 months, and although myself & OH have not had Covid-19 we consider the risk of being infected from people who have had it and recovered is very very low, however, table plans have been devised to maintain some semblance of SD, and hugging & kissing is off the menu laughing

I am on my own but I have played safe so far and my daughters and grown up grandchildren understand that I will not be visiting them or vice versa.  It will be just another few days and look forward to a better 2021!!

However careful you are, sometimes things just happen outside of your control. My car broke down on Friday and had to be pushed off a busy road and recovered to a local garage. The combination of stress, circumstances and necessity combine to make it impossible to avoid close contact with strangers, be that at the roadside, in the recovery truck or taxi home.

Positive tests in this borough have been on the up again in the last couple of weeks from 117 to now 147.if it is because the UNI students are being tested before released home ,it does not bode well for the rest of the country come the "free for all" over xmas and what is going to follow afterwardssurprised

It might also be a good thing if it stops people mixing at Christmas and sending the case count upwards.👍🏻

Please, please stop blaming the Uni students every time you quote rising rates in your area JV. There was obviously a big problem back in late September when they went back, but it wasn’t just students then. Even in Nottingham where your Grand Daughter is studying.

It’s more likely to be your proximity to London and South East that is part of the issue, at the moment, growing case numbers. The cases seem to cascade out of the high areas, until measures are taken, then they roll back again. There must be hundreds of thousands of journeys every day from high into low areas, and vice versa that feeds the case rates. Most journeys hopefully will be necessary, but not all, and that’s the problem.

The next wave will be all about those unable or unwilling to look beyond the Christmas period, and satisfying their personal gratification. Yes it’s hard, but it’s easier than the alternative, and there is now hope on the horizon.

It is difficult for me to gauge the increases given extra testing - the more you test the more you will find

The highest rates of positive tests in this area are in South Hatfield in the area of the UNI and where all the student accomodation isundecided

Our grandaughter is now home and is working at the Tesco superstore in Hatfield and has said , it seems to be the student popoulation there , as at her UNI in Nottingham who seem to still be in denial about the virus and thhe danger it bringssurprised

Ps my post  is i quotecool   "IF it is because the students are being tested before being releasedundecided"

Ok JV, but it’s just that you mention the Uni and students each time you post about your local case rates. Either way, I hope you all stay safe down there.

It just so happens we are 21 miles from KX and have a UNI on our door step

And as it seems happens quite often with posts on this Website (all posters included) not reading posts correctly, and then posting an out of context answerundecided

and that is exacly why we are doing it, if we had deployed this stategy earlier then there is every chance we would not be in the situation we find our selves, using Australia, New Zealand, South Korea as examples. If you know something bad is out there but dont know where it is and it is not easily idenfiyable, then testing has to be one of the weapons of choice.undecided

I hope you realise "all posters..." includes yourself, JV.

In this area we have 3 unis within an hour's drive. To find news reports regarding students and infection, I’d have to search really hard. You do seem to have quite a thing about it.
