Covid Madness -

I would think the rapid tests which take 15 - 20 mins to produce results will have an impact as long as people act in a responsible manner. I would guess if you've been told you've got a positive result it will have a sobering effect, I don't expect the army will have much time for objectors.
I hope it works, it's a huge step forward.

The huge step forward would be compulsory quarantine of infectious people in the way it has been done in Australia - in specific buildings which have been taken over by the health authorities and supervised by them. That would come as an enormous shock across the UK, but that is the way Australia has rediced Covid transmission to zero.

A friend who was in quarantine last month had a phone call to check that she was at home.
The tests won't be anonymous so there's more chance that people will comply.
Liverpool has a high death rate and reduced hospital capacity.

I think the isolation requirement if instructed via the phone app is a bit lacking. As it stands, the person that gets the alert has to isolate for 14 days. It does not instruct anyone who was with the alerted person at the time of the possible contact to also isolate. In my case I was with my wife at a restaurant and was apparently near to someone (between 2 and 4 metres) for a period of over 30 minutes. My wife didn't get the alert because her phone is too old to download the app so, in theory, she didn't need to isolate. although we did the sensible thing and we both isolated.
The app also states that "other people in the household do not need to isolate". As the majority of transmission is, apparently, within households I would have thought that anyone who was in close contact with the alerted person should be told to isolate.
There is talk of the 14 day period of isolation being reduced on the basis that the vast majority of infections become evident within a week. Whilst a shorter period may make people comply more there is always the situation that many people are asymptomatic and can be passing the infection around more readily if the isolation period is reduced.
There is, of course, no check on people asked to isolate via the app as users of it remain totally anonymous.
Regretfully I have little faith in the app now and rely on common sense instead.

what i understand is if someone in your "bubble?"has had a positive test then all other should self isolate for the required times,
If you are advised via the app and show no symptoms at the time ,the rest of your"bubble" do not need to isolate unless you start to show symptoms which i would think is the way to go

you didn't see what happened to him in Spitting Image? The Halloween bit?

Talking of "common sense", one has to hope and trust that folk will use it because it's absolutely no good relying on ministerial statements. Another car crash interview with Robert Jenrick this morning. Asked twice if a family of 4 could go out for a walk and meet 1 other person he spluttered his way to a less than confidence boosting yes. The follow up should surely have been "well isn't that other person meeting up with 4, not 1 then"?

Anyone testing positive has a 10 day period of isolation.
The 14 day period of isolation is for those who have been in ‘close contact’ with someone who has tested positive. If during that period symptoms develop then you would have to go for a test. If that proved positive then all your ‘close contacts’ including anyone in your household would start their 14 day period.

I never saw a great deal of point in saying that you can have a bubble and then later (in Wales during county lockdowns)) saying that you cannot change your bubble. As far as I know who is in your bubble is not recoded and so how is any authority aware if you change it?

Just back from visiting Dad in his care home and we were lucky to get a slot today because they are suspending all visits from tomorrow, having heard absolutely nothing from the government about what the advice on visits will be during the new lockdown.
They were hoping to convert one of the lounges to allow for some sort of indoor visiting now that the weather is making outdoor visits less pleasant but have put all plans on hold because they're not even sure that workmen will be allowed in to do the job.
You would have thought after the earlier experiences that advice to care homes would be reasonably high on the agenda, but apparently not!

The madness has started for the elderly/incontinent not only have the shelves been stripped clean of toilet rolls and kitchen rolls but daughter says even as a mobile carer she has been unable this week to get pads for the people she cares for

There were plenty of toilet rolls for sale in our local Tesco today although I understand they do put a limit on the number you can buy at a time. I wonder if information about shortages adds to the panic buying itself. I know it shouldn't but everyone tries to make sure they don't run short, so to speak.

Ok this afternoon while cycling back through Gateshead I noticed that one shop, The Card Factory, had a long queue outside with people waiting to go in. I thought it odd but forgot about it till I have just read this BBC headline:
John Lewis, Currys PC World and toy chain the Entertainer are among retailers that are extending their opening hours to meet a surge in demand ahead of the lockdown in England.
Hair salons are also opening later as all non-essential retailers prepare to shut for a month from Thursday.
It comes amid reports of queues outside stores such as Primark as people rush to do last-minute shopping. So were people really queuing to get their Christmas cards just in case?

There will be plenty of time to do Christmas shopping when the non essential shops reopen on 2nd December. I know some people are unsure that the lockdown will only last till then but as I understand it the Prime Minister has assured us that it will.

And there lies much of the problem in my opinion, upperclass privileged public school boy graduates from the Oxbridge universities who have little or no understanding of the majority of the population's needs in this dire time.😱

we still have the fifth worst death toll in the World.
Tda, That may well be true, but if one compares deaths per million of population we were 13th in the list, still not good but not quite as,bad as 5th implies. And as you yourself has said in the past the data from many counties is so obviously incorrect that these figures could well be very different.

Was pleased to hear announcement pointing out that some people have reasons for being without masks that are not obvious to others.
Well worth announcing David. As I have said before both m daughters are vulnerable. Both would choose to wear a mask. However my youngest has health issues that sometimes mean that she has to remove her mask in order to breathe. She is concerned about reactions of others.
